Guns are part of the threat culture now
Recently in Melbourne we have been having security guards and patrons being shot outside nightclubs because people they have ejected have guns or have gone home to get them.
Security guards can no longer just assume that the patrons threat to get a gun and come back is not real anymore. You only have one life and dont get paid enough to be disabled for the rest of your life if youre are shot by.
Your door greeters should be screening people better using a threat assessment process
You all should get to know all your regulars and what likelihood they will be armed
Get to know the reputation of your dangerous types by listening and talking to others that know
Dont let anyone reach into a pocket or bag while they are standing next to you if you have been involved in a verbal or physical conflict. This is just stupid to let them do that in todays culture of knives.
It is your responsibility to defend yourself
In my twenty years of security work I have found that most crowd controllers and security guards have no idea how to defend themselves or others from harm. They rely on the limited training received during their one and only course or believe that they have the skills because they have worked in clubs for years and never needed to get better.
Firstly, everyone needs to keep practicing to get better at anything. No one got better just by being in a venue for two years. In that two years you might have had only 3 forceful ejections and learnt nothing new.
Secondly, you are getting older and slower while the patrons that are your main risk category stay the same age but carry more weapons now. Remember that your patrons will change but it is the type of patron that you practice for and they are always coming into your club regardless of how old you are.
Thirdly, in any compensation case for damages you have to show that you took all reasonable steps to protect yourself. Regular training and practical skill courses are a good way to learn what works and what doesnt in a safe workshop rather than in the heat of a real knife fight.
Most crowd controllers I have worked with I always ask them what their process is for knife or glass bottle response because these are so common you need to know what to do when it occurs. They tell me they will just deal with it when it occurs. They often say I cant put it into words or show you how I handle it, but when it happens I will show you then.
Dangerous. Assumptions that you know how to handle it will put you or me in hospital. If you cant explain how you plan to handle a weapon or fight at your venue then you dont know what your doing and always just wing it when in a fight and hope for the best.
Bleed in the training so you dont bleed in the club
I have dealt with firearms before and qualified as a weapons instructor so I wasnt at risk at any stage and knew that I could control this person. I dont recommend that you go and start wrestling or approaching armed suspects unless you know what you are doing.

Two U.S. Womens Beach Teams Still Undefeated
Two U.S. womens beach teams are among the four remaining unbeatens at the SWATCH FIVB World Tour event in Dubai.
Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, Calif.) and Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.), playing together for the first time internationally, and Jen Boss (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) both improved to a perfect 3-0 in the tournament after victories at the Jumeirah Beach Park courts on Wednesday.
Walsh and Branagh were big winners in their third-round match, sweeping Sanne Keizer and Marleen Van Iersel of the Netherlands, 21-14, 21-15. The victory catapults Walsh and Branagh into Round 4 where the squad will meet Canadians Marie-Andre Lessard and Annie Martin on Thursday.
Not to be outdone however, Boss and Ross defeated the Swiss pair of Sarah Schmocker and Isabelle Forrer in the third round, 21-18, 21-17 and will play Brazils Maria Clara-Carol in their next match on Thursday.
The winners of both matches will advance to Fridays semifinal round.

healthy enough to start playing. I’m not going to re-injure it. It’s just now getting it strong enough, getting all the flexibility and range of motion back and all that stuff. We’re probably aiming at a week to two weeks into training camp before I can be 100 percent doing every activity. Right now I’m just mainly doing straight ahead running and exercises for the ankle. But as we all know, five on five basketball requires a lot more than just running.
Trying to be Smart About My Return
I was planning on working extremely hard this offseason on my game. I’m obviously behind schedule. I go into the practice facility in El Segundo every day and see my teammates playing five on five and that’s what I want to be doing. But because of the injury I’m not at that point yet. I know it’s a long season and it’s about being healthy throughout the season. I’ve come to realize that there is no point to rush it back to be at the first day of training camp when it might put my health in jeopardy.
Dealing With the Realities of Post Surgery
Obviously it was painful as far as I had to get surgery, I couldn’t work on my game, I couldn’t fly to Croatia to visit my teammate Vlade (Radmanovic) and experience a part of the world I’ve never been to before. I had to cancel that trip. My offseason concert schedule also took a hit. I love to go to concerts during the summer, but when you’re on crutches and in a boot, the last thing you want to do is go crutching around. I tried to go to concerts and there are just too many people around. I got rid of the crutches and saw some local concerts around San Diego, but I wasn’t able to get to any of the ones I really wanted to see such as Bob Dylan, John Fogerty or Bruce Springsteen. It was a down year as far as that goes.
Yet, everything in this world is relative: I live in San Diego, I’m playing for the Lakers, I know we have a great team coming back and I’m playing in the NBA. Even though it was a tough summer, it’s not like I was sitting around my house being depressed. I’m still enjoying my life.
Advice From My Dad
My dad has always been there giving me good advice, whether it’s injuries, basketball, life, whatever. He’s lived through a lot so he’s got a lot of information and knowledge to share. He told me that the doctors were calling it a minor surgery but the first day he was like, “There is no such thing as a minor surgery. Surgery is surgery. They’re telling you four to six weeks and that means if you were working a regular job you’d be able to go back to work. It’s going to be longer than they tell you. You’ve got to be patient. Your body doesn’t know when the NBA season starts. Your body recovers on its own time and heals on its own time.” His main advice was just to be patient and keep working and keep enjoying what you’re doing.
Staying in Touch With My Teammates During the Offseason
It’s nothing like during the season but all of us pretty much stay in touch. We have a pretty close team out here. I talk to the guys if any of them are in San Diego because that’s where I spend most of my offseason. I launched my own foundation – the Luke Walton Foundation last weekend (more about that in another blog) and Jordan Farmar drove down for the event. The guys that stay around the West Coast, we stay in touch, go to dinner once in a while. I talk with Kobe every now and then. He was pretty busy with the Olympics. I saw him a couple days after he got back. He came into the physical therapy to get an adjustment on his body after all the Olympics. He’s married with kids, so most of the guys who have families spend most of their offseason with them. You expect that.
Thoughts on the Olympics
I didn’t watch much. Most of those games were on so late out here. I kind of stay away from basketball in the offseason, especially when you ended the year the way we did. I was more watching the beach volleyball. That was my favorite part.
The Role of Music in My Life
I love music. When I go running I have my iPod on. When I wake up in the morning and I’m going to work out and it’s early and I’m tired, the first thing I do is pop open my laptop and hit shuffle on my iTunes. It makes it easier to do stuff. Granted I grew up with a jukebox playing from sun up to sun down every day until it probably got stuck in my mind early. I pretty much listen to music with everything I do.
My Latest Musical Purchases
The most recent song I bought was the Kid Rock song, All Summer Long. There is a new feature on the iPhone where you hit Shazaam when you hear something in the car and it just pops up and you download it right there. The most recent CD I bought was the Lil Wayne CD which one of my buddies told me was too good not to have.
Anxious to Start the Season
The feeling I’m getting around the locker room is everyone is excited. I can’t wait for this season to start. That series from last season is going to be with us all year and hopefully help us and motivate us in those long stretches of the season where you’re fatigued and beat up and tired. This week the UCI World Cycling Championships are being held in northern Italy. If you don't seem to care who wins, you are not alone. The Worlds used to be held in late August/early September but, about 10 years ago the UCI moved them into late September/early October. A closer examination reveals a number of reasons for the decline in the Worlds. First off, it is a very long racing season. The first races begin in February and run all the way through October. It is very difficult for a rider to stay fresh and fit throughout the whole season. When the Worlds were in August most riders tried to hold their form. Now that the Worlds are a month later, and after the Vuelta a Espana, many riders chose to end their season, especially if they don't ride the Vuelta, early.

Also, because the Worlds come so late in the season, a rider has to make some hard decisions concerning their racing schedule. It is clearly possible to hold form from the Tour in July until the Worlds, but if a rider has ridden an ambitious spring program, the extra month until the championships may prove just too difficult to overcome.

All this adds up to less than complete fields for the pro men's races. Two-time defending world time trial champion Fabian Cancellara recently stated that he just doesn't have any spark left to defend his title. Maybe an Olympic gold medal is enough, but I am guessing that he is pretty darn tired and doesn't want to wait until late September to end his season.

How about USA's pro men's team for the worlds. About the only headliner is Levi Leipheimer; I was seriously expecting a call from the US team manager asking if I felt fit enough to go 270km. My guess is that Levi is at the Worlds because he is basically in his second season after having to sit out July when Team Astana wasn't invited to the Tour. Clackamas won the Treasure Valley Crossover, but only by a margin of +4 points over Tacoma in a tie breaker rule. Clackamas, Tacoma and host Treasure Valley all completed pool play with 4-1 records. Treasure Valley, with the smallest point differential of the three teams, took third.

Edmonds won all five of their matches to win the Southwestern Oregon Crossover. With Southwestern Oregon, Walla Walla, Skagit Valley and Green River all tied with 3-2 records, placing was determined on tie breaker rules. Southwestern Oregon took second and Walla Walla third.
Clackamas won the Treasure Valley Crossover, but only by a margin of +4 points over Tacoma in a tie breaker rule. Clackamas, Tacoma and host Treasure Valley all completed pool play with 4-1 records. Treasure Valley, with the smallest point differential of the three teams, took third.

I have two papers that I should be writing right now, but I found it more important to update the old eljay about nothing. Iapos;m actually just kind of burnt out from all of the homework this weekend, I needed something else to think about.

My skin has been crazy dry lately, I donapos;t know what to use on it. Iapos;ve tried a few different lotions and nothing is working. Actually, I think the constant changing is making it worse. Go me.


I want a vacation. Iapos;m thinking about taking an alt. Spring break. I get to go away and I get to help people, score.
I have no desire to eat today. I donapos;t know what to make of that. I forced myself to eat breakfast, but I think my body is following my brain into panic mode. Once your brain starts to melt from overuse, the rest of your body seems to think there is a problem I guess.

It is just me and New Steph in the apartment today. She usually wants nothing to do with me, but since I am hunkered down and homeworking my life away she is always around trying to make conversation. Um...remember when we were just coexisting in the apartment? I liked that, you should too.

It is almost time to flip to the new gnome of the month. Rachelapos;s calendar makes me smile all year round :-)

Race for the cure next week, it will be a blast. Iapos;m happy it is race time again.
