Needed a new hard disk drive (HDD) as my Barracuda 500GB was maxing out. Sheesh don't ask me what I have inside. Right, so I made a trip down to Sim Lim Square, e place where computer geeks go to.

I went through and compared price-lists from several shops for 5 minutes, yes only 5 because I knew what I wanted. However, I didn't realize what I 'needed' till I was about to make payment.

Both SATA ports of my motherboard were being used. I could've gotten a IDE version but that would be downgrading. Thus, I decided to get a new board. And by saying new, I went for e latest P45 Express chipset.

Then I thought to myself, "Hey might as well get e mobo with a bundled processor". Afterall, I'd doubts that it could support my ancient Pentium 4. Then it started to get to me, I realized it wouldn't for sure support my exisiting graphics card either. Because e standard in this modern day is PCI-Express interface, mine was AGP.

And you thought that was it. RAM was an issue too because DDR-2 wasn't backward compatible. I got impatient. "Look I'm upgrading my system. Just give me something reasonable for a non-gamer. Something future-proof", I said to e sales lady politely (with a smile).

Fair enough, whatever she took was well within my budget which included an operating system, Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit edition). Plus a power supply unit with higher wattage just to support my new graphics card. What the.. I didn't expect that lol!

Got e Quad-Core chip, which should aid in multi-tasking.

Im pleased to report that the skies are blue here in Suburbia, both literally and figuratively today.  After one of the worst work weeks Ive had in a long time, I arrived at the office to find that my one big time commitment of the daya weekly meeting that typically lasts around two hourshad been cancelled.  Amazingly, I now had a full day in the office to actually do some work.  Id almost forgotten what that was like.
So, I finished several projects, caught up on my email, returned phone calls, and felt generally productive.  Its a good thing, considering that I only have a few hours in the office tomorrow morning before I host a team from New Zealand thats visiting All-American Public Schools for the afternoon.  And, as soon as Im finished with that, Ill be leaving town again for a meeting followed by another presentation on Friday.
But, Im trying not to think about all that right now or at least limit my thoughts to what Im going to wear since I need to pack soon.  Instead, I decided to shock my family and actually prepare a home cooked meal for dinner.  I decided on grilled chicken breasts, asparagus and pecan penne pasta, and garlic toast on asiago cheese bread.  Very yummy!
For the chicken breasts, I just seasoned with Emerils seasoning mix then threw them in to marinate with some lemon juice, olive oil, and fresh herbs.  Adventure Guy grilled them while I made the pasta, which is one of my favorite spring and ummer recipes, but its been out of rotation around here for some reason.  Try it youll be glad you did.

We got a pair of these sweet looking Nike Air Control II FS Indoor Soccer Shoes in White/Concord/Bright Cactus from the cool guys at Soccerpro.com. Molded cleats resemble the basic soccer shoe design made of non-removable rubber or hard plastic formed on the bottom of the shoe for optimal traction and control. This may be used on all field types and in all weather conditions making it ideal for beginners and players on the intermediate level. It is so safe that it has been required by many youth programs.
Detachable cleats vary in length and are usually made of hard plastic or plastic with metal tips. It is ideal for experienced players who can tailor the cleats depending on the field type and weather condition. The studs? length and type can also be altered based on the said conditions since it can be screwed on and off and replaced easily. This type is more appropriate to use on wet, soggy fields, or on well-groomed, soft grass fields. Turf shoes are basically good training shoes providing a back-up game pair for hard-surface conditions and on artificial turf as the bottom contains various raised patterns instead of studs. Indoor shoes are similar to low-cut sneakers or cross trainers. They are specifically designed for playing indoors in a gym or recreational facility for the flat, rubbery type bottom provides better traction on indoor courts or fields. On artificial turfs however they are preferred and required so that the turf won?t be torn up.
Sandals are worn before the game to preserve your soccer shoes from additional wear. It slips on easily even if your socks and shin guards are on and will allow your feet to breathe after a game. A must have for any player. When trying on a new pair, make sure to wear them with the socks and shin guards that you will be using in practice and at games. You should feel the way each item matches its fit with the others. And when measuring, the wearers toe should come within the width of a thumb with the end of the shoe when the wearer is standing.

Question:
I have seen this similar situation at least 4 times in the last year - with the same results. An attacking player is dribbling from a wing area (left or right of the goal) in the defenders penalty area. A defender takes a hard and late hip charge into the offensive player. Enough to move them 2 - 4 feet off the ball. The offensive player maintains balance and control. But either immediately or within 1 or 2 seconds loses the ball to the second or third defender (in each situation the defense outnumbers the offense in the immediate vicinity of the play). No whistle and actually no play on is verbalized or signalled. In all cases after the game the referee informs the offensive team/player that if the player had been knocked to the ground a penalty would have ensued. I love a good physical game and in some cases I could easily argue that advantage was the call. But the seemingly late nature of the hit bothers me. Myself, as a ref Im loath to call a PK but worry about benefiting the defensive team with questionable play and penalizing the offensive team for not flopping. These hip charges are hard, from the side or slightly behind the offensive player. If the offensive player went down I dont think anyone would have been suprised. But with them not falling I cant see a foul being called. So, there are a couple parts to my question. 1.) using the four Ps the call seems rather legitimate but it seems to me that the defense gained advantage using a questionable tackle. Could this be whistled as a foul? 2.) even if it is not a foul could this warrant a caution?
USSF answer (September 24, 2008):
We cannot make any definitive comment on a game played under high school rules, as it would not have been played under the Laws of the Game. However, if the game had been played under the Laws of the Game, we can make some definite statements:
1. What you describe has nothing to do with advantage, but is strictly a matter of a referee afraid to make a call. There is no room for cowards in the refereeing corps.
2. In general we can say, without fear of being incorrect, that hip charges at any level of play (male/female, young/old, skilled/unskilled, etc.) are unfair and thus not allowed. Charges must be shoulder to shoulder, with both players having at least one foot on the ground. However, we must consider some allowance for differences in height and weight and bodily proportions. In other words, we must not forget that both the laws of physics and Mother Nature can overrule the Laws of the Game, in that women are usually wider at the hips than men and men are usually wider at the shoulders than women. What we judge is how those bodily characteristics are used. If they are used unfairly and only the referee on the spot can do that then a foul should be called.
3. Referees who do not call unfair charges should consider two courses of action: Either call fouls correctly or stop refereeing, as they are doing the rest of us no favors. Simply because a player was fouled but not knocked to the ground is not a valid reason not to call a foul. A foul is a foul is a foul.
4. Referees MUST make the same call in the penalty area that they would make on the rest of the field. If they cannot do that, they must consider those same two courses of action, because their failure to call the game correctly makes problems for all referees.
5. If the referee chooses to make a decision which each of us must do thousands of times in a game then it had better be for the good of the game. The decision to award the advantage must be based on the four Ps, but in that case the referee must follow through and speak to the miscreant afterwards. There may be no need for a caution on the first offense, that is up to the referee, but if the player or the team contnues to do that, the referee must punish the misconduct.

Do you ever remember times of boredom, when you just had absolutely nothing to do? I remember those times but they are starting to become part of my long-term memory now instead of the short-term. Lately I have been dreaming of such times in hopes that sooner rather than later I again will have such a peaceful day. OK, enough with the sappy, I WANT A DAY TO DO NOTHING!

OK I am over that now, so this weekend we did not do a lot but we did something. We went over to a couple friend's house Saturday to watch some football and eat but we ended up talking too much, watching no football and eating. Cutler had a great time and his buddy Heather bought him a monkey pillow and blanket that he is completely in love with. He took it to daycare this morning and I should have taken a pic, I promise to insert a pic soon.
We went to church yesterday morning and met our small group at Cracker Barrel for brunch. A couple in our small group has not been able to attend lately due to being on bed rest and in the hospital (she is pregnant) and I received the most wonderful text last night saying that their beautiful daughter had been born at 8:20 pm. we have prayed over this family for so long and are ecstatic about this arrival.


So we had a fairly non-eventful weekend but have a very eventful week ahead. Thursday after work I will be assisting with preparations for the SBA second annual health conference. Friday I will be working the conference mentioned above, and Saturday is drop off for Kids Market.


I am pretty sure there are some of you who have no idea what kids Market is so check back in tomorrow and I will inform you all about it. I might even include some pictures.

Here is a pic of Cutler and I goofing off last night, grainy but it is from the crackberry so what do you expect.

This is a neat little mist machine. The bottom of the device has a pump that pumps up to build a little pressure. My advice it to be sure to take plenty of water with you, because you can spray out a lot of water very quickly especially on these hot summer nights. We used ours at Riverbend in Chattanooga(early June) when the heat index was 99. It really seemed to help. If you wear glasses be sure to take something to wipe them with as there is no way not to get wather all over your glasses.

I was thinking of topics to write about and it came to me to write about two of the most obvious topics there are: food and weather. So here goes!

As a preface, let me say that as a result of informal polling among PCV friends it appears that I have one of the best food situations around, for which I say Gracias a dios, as everyone here says in relation to any give situation. In addition there is Sí dios quiere. See you at the meeting tomorrow? Yes, if God wants. I hope to do well in that math test. If God wants. And then, yes, there is the thank goodness which I suppose we say a lot in English, too. Enough on that tangent. Anyway, the point being that I am extremely thankful for the fact that my host Mom is quite the good cook and I am learning tons of good recipes which I cant wait to make for everyone which I come back, but I will now give you a sneak peak into the Tico diet. Two words: rice and beans. Really, Ticos can absolutely have rice and beans for breakfast (gallo pinto which consists of fried rice and beans with a side of cheese or sour cream called natilla), lunch (which could also include fried plaintains and luckily for me includes chicken, salad, and a picadillo which is a kind of vegetable side dish) and dinner (similar to lunch). Every day. The other key word of the Tico diet is carbohydrates. It never ceases to amaze me that one can eat spaghetti WITH rice and beans. A PC friend was telling me the other day that he could not believe it when lunch came out one day with pasta, rice, potatoes, and yucca (a starchy potatoe-esque that I am actually a really big fan of beause it has a better taste than potatoe). I dont understand how the plates dont break under the weight of such ridiculous amounts of starches, really! I definitely maintain that the fact that I havent gained a PC first-year 15 á la the freshman 15 of college is that I run and walk everywhere all the time gracias a dios, verdad?!

Another integral aspect of the Tico diet is cafecito. Every morning upon walking up we have coffee. Then, in the afternoon around 1 or 2pm, more coffee (and apparently my family does not drink that much, relatively speaking). But if my host parents dont have their afternoon coffee its as if something is off-kilter for the day and a topic of conversation. I cannot believe I didnt have afternoon cafecito! For me, its more a matter of not liking the idea of to have any kind of food or drink every single solitary day and for that reason I usually just have 1/2 cup upon waking up and then only in the afternoon if Im visiting someone and they offer it to me or at a meeting, as most meetings here end with a friendly cafecito break. The craziest thing is that people are accustomed to drinking coffee basically as soon as they start drinking milk. My little host niece who isnt even 2 years old drinks coffee and its totally the norm! I guess it really is just a matter of whats normal is normal, but maybe there is some truth to the fact that coffee stunts your growth, seing as there are few members of my town, men or women, who are taller than me hmmm!

As you probably know, in tropical areas like Costa Rica there are two seasons, the rainy season and the dry season. As you may not know, the term rainy season, which I currently have the pleasure of considering a part of my everyday life these days, is an understatement. It should be more aptly termed the torrential downpour season. It cracks me up because Ive read in CR guidebooks that as a way to make it sound better, they call the rainy season the green season which is certainly good PR work. Luckily in my town its green and beautiful all year round, but now its just really really rainy! The crazy part is that almost every single day when I wake up, it is gorgeous and sunny outside. I go milk the cows, go for my run, etc etc, then in the afternoon right after lunchtime the clouds fill the blue sky and it begins to downpour and any remnant of the sunny morning seems like a distant memory. I guess being from New England, I should be used to weather changing at the drop of a hat as the saying goes, if you dont like the weather, wait 5 minutes but here in CR I just cant get over the regularity of beautiful mornings and not-so-beautiful afternoons.

However there always are exceptions, like a few weeks ago when I had a packed day of visiting the town next door for a meeting with a womens group that is working on a project of producing vanilla and then in the afternoon going to the high school for a meeting with the kids who are working on the rabbit project (see previous post). Well, when I woke up to torrential downpour, the idea of walking an hour in the rain to the neighboring town was less than appealing so I called and rescheduled for the following week (which I did indeed have on a very nice morning, gracias a dios, the week after and it was quite successfulwe had a discussion about the goals, resources, opportunities, and challenges facing the group and how to overcome the challenges and use the resources to take advantage of the opportunities) . Then, as soon as I got off the phone, a neighbor from the high school passed by to say that class was cancelled due to the rain. I couldnt believe itinstead of having a snow day, it was a rain day! In the end, it was nice to hang around the house and get some reading done (by the way, I would highly recommend The Last Lecture to anyone who has not read it, as well as Colors of the Mountain which I am just finishing up), but it really cracked me up to have school cancelled due to heavy rainsit at least gives you an idea of the severity of the rainy season.

Alright, so in looking over this post, I feel like I am ranting a bit, but its really meant to give a peek into life here, so I hope it was successful in doing so. The Padang, Sunday, August 31, 2008 - 11,000 runners from Singapore and around Southeast Asia joined 24 other countries and an estimated 1 million other runners worldwide as they completed the world’s largest ever one-day running event - the Human Race 10K. This is also a charity event as a percentage of the registration fees collected go to three global charities - the World Wild Fund for Nature, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and the United Nations High Commissioners for Refugees (UNHCR).The first runner to reach the finish line was Jauhari Johan of Indonesia, followed closely about one and a half minutes later by Kien Man Lim of Malaysia. Mok Ying Ren, the first Singaporean to finish, came in 6 seconds later.
The first female runner to complete the 10km race was Singaporean Vivian Tang, who finished in 39 minutes and 18 seconds.
The myriad musical performances after the race, especially that of American rock band Boys Like Girls, kept the energy levels high through the evening and livened up the Padang.
