Travel usually refers to visiting the places and collecting details about a particular object, place or anything. But, there is something that we can do while and after travelling. Its advertising. There are certain travelling advertising agents for this purpose. Particularly, there is a Full Service Advertising Agency for these travel advertising. This is considered as the foremost activity while travelling and can lead to much income for a particular concern. Travel advertising should be in a way that it should attract the people and benefit them. There are many things we can advertise such as sports products like Beach Balls, Bottled water, sun glasses and so on and also advertisement on travel agency too. For example, if there is an advertisement on sun glasses, the concerned agency should provide every detail about that product. There are many ways to improve this activity and maximize the income. Specify what the product is for and mention the tie ups that the particular organization has. This travel advertising is followed in most of the countries and in fact, it can very well lead to a countrys income too. One of the easiest ways to advertise is to make accessible through internet. Most of the people in this world knows about internet and they can really get benefited.

Brazil

No team in the history of football have enjoyed as much success as Brazil. When it comes to the FIFA World Cup, not only have the South American giants won more titles and more games than anyone else, and scored more goals, they have been ever-present at the finals, never once failing to negotiate their regions qualifying tournament. However, the reigning South American champions and FIFA Confederations Cup holders failed in their bid to reach a fourth successive FIFA World Cup Final at Germany 2006. That tournament marked the end of a golden era in the countrys history and ushered in what what fans hope would be an equally successful spell under former Auriverde star Dunga.
With Brazils phenomenal recent record at the finals, it is easy to forget that it was not always that way. Back in 1950, they hosted the FIFA World Cup supremely confident of celebrating the title at the awe-inspiring Maracana Stadium but failed to count on Obdulio Varelas indomitable Uruguay side snatching victory in the decisive game. There was a happier ending in Sweden eight years later, when a 17-year-old Pele guided Brazil to their first triumph. His magical skills, along with those of Garrincha and other fabled names, ensured the countrys continued domination over the next few years as further titles were added at Chile 1962 and, perhaps most spectacularly of all, at Mexico 1970.
Peles retirement marked a downturn in Brazilian fortunes, however, and it was some 24 years and several false dawns later before the Canarinhos reached the pinnacle of world football once more. At USA 1994, Carlos Parreira was at the helm of a side famed more for its tactical nous than technical prowess. Nevertheless, with the magic of Romario and Bebeto and the leadership of Dunga, Parreira duly guided Brazil to victory over Italy on penalties after the first goalless Final in the competitions history. In 1998, with Ronaldo having assumed Romarios mantle, the team coached by the legendary Mario Zagallo fell to France in the Final, opening a wound that would take four years to heal. Although Luiz Felipe Scolaris unheralded team arrived at Korea/Japan 2002 without the tag of favourites, they proceeded to sweep aside all-comers with some dazzling football from the three Rs - Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho - to claim a fifth FIFA World Cup.
In 2006, with Parreira back at the helm once more, the Seleção boasted perhaps the most glittering line-up in their history, with Kaka, Ze Roberto, Ronaldinho, Adriano and Ronaldo set to threaten even the tightest defences. They did wreak a certain amout of havoc in Germany, but not for quarter-final opponents France, who sent the Auriverde packing with a 1-0 win. Though no consolation for their elimination, Ronaldos feat of becoming the competitions all-time top-scorer during the finals was a source of pride to all Brazilians.
In the aftermath of Germany 2006, the Brazilian Football Condeferation entrusted the running of the team to the hugely sucessful ex-international Carlos Dunga, who had captained Brazil to the world title in 1994 but who, curiously, had never worked as a coach before. Dunga wasted little time in repaying his employers faith, leading the side to a 3-0 win over rivals Argentina in the final of the Copa America Venezuela 2007, having blooded a host of new players and coped without several big-name stars. All told, it bodes extremely well for the five-time world champions as they bid to repeat their first-place finish that took them comfortably through the qualifiers for Germany 2006
Vs
Bolivia
Having enjoyed their most successful period more than a decade ago, Bolivia continue to struggle to reassert themselves on the South American scene. Poor results, a revolving-door coaching policy and a lack of new talent coming through the ranks have seen the Bolivians fail in their last three attempts to reach a fourth FIFA World Cup finals.
The last time La Verde appeared on world footballs biggest stage, back at USA 1994, they pushed defending champions Germany all the way in the Opening Match, a solitary Jurgen Klinsmann strike the difference between the teams. A 0-0 draw against Korea Republic was then followed by a 3-1 reverse against Spain, the Bolivians clearly missing key man Luis Cristaldo, sent off against the Taeguk Warriors. Their North American adventure may have come to a premature end, but the teams performances hinted at a promising future for Bolivian football.
Despite not making it past the first round, the results were a clear improvement on the national teams previous finals appearances. At Brazil 1950, their only contribution was an 8-0 hammering at the hands of a magnificent Uruguay side on their way to a second world crown. Nor did things go much better at Uruguay 1930, Yugoslavia and Brazil helping themselves to comfortable 4-0 wins.
As regards their FIFA World Cup Qualifying record, La Verde have singularly failed to build on the promise shown at USA 1994. In the qualifiers for France 1998, Bolivia finished ninth in the ten team South American Zone, and only seventh ahead of Korea/Japan 2002. And the less said about the Germany 2006 campaign the better, coaches Nelson Acosta, Ramiro Blacut and Ovidio Messa all came and went, the trio accumulating 12 defeats, two draws and just four wins between them.
That dismal record saw Bolivia finish rock-bottom of the qualifying table, four points behind both Venezuela and Peru. Now with national legend Erwin Sanchez at the helm, the Andean outfit are hoping to recover the form that once made them feared opponents, particularly at home. Unfortunately, results at the Copa America 2007 in Venezuela were less than encouraging, Sanchezs charges heading home after the first round. The prize, should the former Benfica and Boavista star manage to engineer a spectacular turnaround, could well be a place at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. Although their start has not been encouraging with no wins from four games, hopes of a return to the finals are still alive in La Paz.
Probable lineups:
Brazil: Julio Cesar; Maicon, Luisao, Lucio, Juan; Lucas, Josue, Diego; Robinho, Ronaldinho and Luis Fabiano. Coach: Dunga.
Bolivia: Carlos Arias; Miguel Hoyos, Ronald Raldes, Ronald Rivero, Ignacio Garcia; Welter Flores, Ronald Garcia, Jaime Robles, Joselito Vaca, Jaime Moreno; and Marcelo Martins Moreno. Coach: Erwin Sanchez.Referee: Alfredo Intriago (ECU).Venue: Joao Havelange.Time:20.

This years Premier League has had no shortage of stories, given the happenings at Newcastle, Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea, but the most remarkable story of the season has been the under-reported plight of West Ham United. After going to Craven Cottage and winning 2-1 on Saturday, the Hammers occupy fifth place in a league in which some think they should have been relegated.
Those feelings come from last weeks decision by an independent review that found West Ham illegally used Carlos Tevez in avoiding relegation during the 2006-07 season. Tevezs play at the end of that season created a minor legend for him amongst Hammers fans, but amongst Sheffield United followers, the Argentine forward represents everything that was unfair about their teams relegation.
Tevez should not have been on West Ham, his transfer being handled through a third party (and agency that owned Tevezs registration, against Premier League rules). Sheffield Uniteds claim isthey were wrongly relegated because of the use of an illegal player.  That claim was upheld by the independent review, and damages are to be awarded. Those damages, meant to compensate Sheffield United for losing out on Premier League revenue, are speculated to be between twenty-one and thirty million pounds, all of which will come out of West Hams coughers.
The news of the huge financial judgment is only one part of a summer-long saga engulfing Upton Park. It folows a summer sell-off of payers, the resignation of Alan Curbishley and the appoint of Gianfranco Zola as their new manager.
In the short-term, the decision will have no effect on the pitch, but for a club that was selling players this summer in an attempt to balance their books, it seems likely (despite denials) that January sales will happen.  Owned by Icelandic bankers, the now mythological Credit Crunch could also handcuff West Ham.
For now, Gianfranco Zolas task is to accumulate as many points as possible before the next transfer window. The idea is to try and stave off relegation with a good run in the fall.
With two wins in two matches, the Italian manager is off to a great start. He has adjusted to the Hammers weakness along the back and in the middle by switching formation, going to a 4-3-2-1 that provides the back support while midigating their need for a creative presence in midfield.  The formation has also help offset the loss of striker Dean Ashton by moving the attack away from a tactic that was overly dependent on his scoring goals.
Now in attack, Zola will rely on countryman David Di Michele, last weeks ASR Player of the Week, and Matthew Etherington, who took his turn as Man of the Match against Fulham.  The product is very Italian in style, a team that does not mind their opponent controlling the ball.  While their opponent moves into attack, West Ham coils in preparation for a counter.
When the Hammers struck, Fulham was bitten twice in the waning moments of the first half. More than one viewer at home must have gone to the bathroom only to return to Fulham being down two goals. A Danny Murphy penalty kick pulled Fulham back to within one, but playing a man down after Andy Johnsons 45th minute dismissal, the Cottagers were not able to get a second goal.
Hosting Bolton next weekend, Zola is given a prime chance to go into the next international match break having won three on the trot. A prolonged winning streak or a stint near the top of the table would be just another in a long line of remarkable headlines for this seasons Hammers squad.
Movement at the Bottom
We spend so much time looking at the top of the table that the machinations at the bottom are often overlooked. While I try to write game summaries each weekend updating ASR on whats happening to the Top Four, the relegation-threated receive no such attention. This year, with Tottenham and Newcastle again spending time at the depths of the table, the stories near the Championship are almost as interesting as those near the Champions League.
This week, two recently-promoted sides took steps to distinguish themselves from the relegation-battlers. Hulls miracle victory at Arsenal gives them 11 points on the season, as many as Derby had last campaign. West Brom got three huge points at Middlesbrough, helping them to offset the effects of a relatively difficult starting schedule.
These wins have helped created a group of four teams that are unwittingly positioning themselves for a relegation-battle. Newcastle and Tottenham have been well-covered. They are joined by Bolton and Stoke City, two teams who have lacked in both quality and form.
Bolton and Stoke are each teams that lack athleticism, relying on their size and strength to win via set pieces and direct play. While such a style used to be viable in England, the influx of talent from around the world means a league of bigger, stronger, faster players who can dispel such unimaginative attacks.
Unfortunately for both the Trotters and the Potters, there are not many other options for attack within their squads. Bolton and Stoke may not be the worst teams in the league right now, but they are the most likely sides to stay in this conversation throughout the year.
ASR Player of the Week: Fernando Torres, F, Liverpool
Torres made this weeks Player of the Week selection easy, scoring both goals in the Merseyside Derby to give Liverpool a 2-0 win, helping the Reds move back to the top of the table. The goals ended a mini-drought for the Spanish star, having gone goalless in league since the first match of the season. His performance was the main factor distinguishing Liverpool from Everton on Saturday, a level of differentiation no other player can claim in Week 6.  Thus, Torres wins ASRs Player of the Week.
ASR Manager of the Week: Steve Bruce, Wigan
In ASRs preview of Wigans match with Manchester City, we noted that the Latics lacked a presence on the left wing to match Antonio Valencias athleticism on the right, with containing wing play being the key to stopping the Citizens. In response, Bruce gave Olivier Kapo his first start of the season, deploying him to match-up on Shaun Wright-Phillips side. Though Wright-Phillips still found opportunities to be dangerous, it was the most containment the winger has encountered since moving from Chelsea.
Bruce also pressed the right buttons in the second half, knowing when and how to let up on the gas after going up 2-1. He moved Emile Hemsky from the middle to the left and gave Amr Zaki free rain up top. The Egyptian star got under the skin of center backs Richard Dunne and Micah Richards, heling sustain a attack that not only played out the rest of the clock but also won some set pieces and corners that nearly made it a two goal match.
Those small tactical advantages Bruce gave his side win him Manager of the Week over Phli Brown, who deserves some recognition for what he was able to motivate his team to do on Saturday.

Arsenal's Robin Van Persie (R) watches as Hull City's Geovanni clears the ball during their English Premier League soccer match at the Emirates stadium in London September 27, 2008. [Agencies]

LONDON - Hull recorded one of the greatest shocks in English Premier League history with an astonishing 2-1 win at Arsenal on Saturday.

Second-half goals from Geovanni and Daniel Cousin inflicted just the Gunners' second defeat at the Emirates stadium - their first came against West Ham in April 2007 - and provoked exuberant celebrations among the travelling contingent.

It also denied Arsene Wenger's side the chance to return to the top of the table, although that disappointment will be nothing compared to the embarrassment of being humbled on home turf by a side dismissed as whipping boys by the pundits.

Arsenal had looked on course to return to the summit courtesy of Paul McShane's own goal just after the interval but, despite a welter of late pressure, they could find no answer to Hull's indomitable spirit.

Few teams venture to the Emirates with hopes of conquering it, a point underlined by the fact that Arsenal had rattled in 14 unanswered goals in their four games this term.

But Hull are not typical top flight green-horns. The Tigers had taken four points from their first two away games and had only been out-classed once, in a home rout by Wigan.

City were in no mood to be overawed. They were determined not to allow Arsenal the space and time they need to thrive and the hosts found themselves frustrated at every turn.

They enjoyed an early stroke of luck, when Emmanuel Adebayor's headed goal was disallowed for a foul on McShane, but for the most part they relied on their own qualities.

Two early chances summed up the first half. In the 16th minute, a quicksilver break from Theo Walcott appeared certain to end in the striker bearing down on goal, only for Andy Dawson to emerge from nowhere and whip the ball from his toes.

There were more heroics three minutes later. A slick interchange between Kolo Toure and Cesc Fabregas ended with the Spaniard reaching the by-line. His pull-back found William Gallas but the Frenchman's goal-bound shot was superbly blocked by George Boateng.

Hull's unexpected resistance seemed to befuddle Arsenal, with Walcott suffering more than most.

The 19-year-old inexplicably tried to control Emmanuel Eboue's 25th-minute cross rather than simply head it home, allowing Hull to smother the danger, and then took too many touches after bursting onto a Fabregas pass.

But Walcott was not alone. There were howls of protest from the home fans when a canny ball from Adebayor teed up Eboue only for the Ivorian midfielder to try yet another pass, rather than shoot from an inviting position.

Arsenal trooped off for half-time looking perplexed, but normal service appeared to be resumed within five minutes of the re-start.

Walcott tore down the right, crossed into the six-yard box and after Adebayor had helped the ball on, it was bundled home by the back-tracking McShane.

That should have been the cue for Arsenal's supposed class to tell. Instead, Hull stormed back in the most astonishing manner imaginable.

Their 64th-minute equaliser was startling enough, Geovanni cutting inside past Gael Clichy before unleashing a magnificent 25-yard shot which swerved across Manuel Almunia and into the top corner.

But that was capped just moments later when Dawson's fizzed in-swinging corner was met at the near post by the leaping Cousin, the striker's flicked header soaring into the opposite corner.

Arsenal tried manfully to mount a fight-back. Adebayor and van Persie might have done better than roll shots past the left-hand post after finding space in the area and Gallas was unlucky to see a thumping header hit the woodwork, with substitute Carlos Vela deflecting the rebound wide.

And then, deep into stoppage time, City were indebted to goalkeeper Boaz Myhill, who somehow turned aside a blistering drive from Fabregas.

The professor at one university program that graduates about 45 students a year with CS degrees, wrote in a comment: Last year 87% of our seniors were employed before graduation. The median starting salary was $58,500. A majority of CIS students had multiple job offers. From where I sit, there is a huge demand for entry level IT professionals in IS and in CS.

Carlos Vela has found himself in a minor predicament will he follow in the footsteps of Hugo Sanchez or Thierry Henry? Depending where your loyalties lie, Mexicans have resembled him to their great legend and former manager, while the Arsenal faithful have gunned Vela as their next club legend. Can the former U17 World Cup Golden Shoe winner truly live up to the summit of expectations being levelled against him? Is he potentially Arsenals all-time leading goalscorer like Henry?

Parting company with 2.5m for a sixteen year-old would, in most cases, leave many questioning the managements decision. Nevertheless, when Arsene Wenger decides to bid substantial money for a Mexican starlet it raises few questions - it is almost a guarantee to be another masterstroke of genius in the transfer market. A move to North London with Arsenal appears to have been the perfect linkup for both player and club, but his rise to prominence came when he donned the Mexican jersey.

Carlos enjoyed the company of his older brother Alejandro at Mexican outfit Guadalajara, who has also gone on to play professional football. 2005 proved to be the breakthrough year for Vela at the FIFA U17 World Cup held in Peru. Five goals, including the opener in the final against Brazil, resulted in Vela claiming the impressive status as the tournaments leading goalscorer and sparked a frenzy of interest from across the Atlantic in Europe. Although he may not have been aware of it at the time, Velas talismanic performances shot him to stardom as one of the most promising young players in world football. Amid constant speculation, a move to Arsenal was confirmed in the latter months of 2005 but Spain was to be his temporary home.

At the tender age of sixteen, Vela was loaned out to Spanish second-tier club UD Salamanca the reason being that he would fail to obtain a work permit until he was 18 and so a spell in the sun beckoned. During the 2006/2007 season, Vela transferred potential into substance by scoring eight goals in 31 appearances, but more significantly setting up a much larger number of goals. Expectedly, Hugo Sanchez the head coach of the Mexican national team at the time was caught by his impressive form and indicated a senior call-up was on the cards in the near future. Sanchez said It is difficult to forecast the future, but I want any Mexican who plays here or abroad to have the success that I had in Europe. I saw him very little of Vela, mainly at youth national level. But I know that he has talent and goal-sense, two important things for his career."

September 2007 arrived with Velas first call-up to the international team and his successful stint in Spain was extended, this time in the nations domestic pinnacle of La Liga with Osasuna. He made his Mexican debut against the country he scored the winner against in the U17 World Cup final, Brazil, and only one month later he opened his goalscoring account this coming against Guatemala. Three goals and four assists for Osasuna during the season secured a much coveted work permit, finally allowing Vela to join up with Arsenal and the opportunity to play in the Premiership and Champions League. His in Spain convinced Wenger he was ready to grace the first-team and opted against another loan spell. I like his intelligence and his pace. He scores goals but he can also create them. He's a special talent and I believe 100 per cent that he will make it at the highest level." Indeed Wenger stood by his word and Vela made his competitive debut with a substitute appearance against Newcastle in their 3-0 victory. The faith to start Vela in the Carling Cup match against Sheffield Utd was fully repaid as he played the starring role in a 6-0 victory, leading the headlines with a hat trick. His reputation as a rising talent was asserted with two goals against minnows Belize in Mexicos bid to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, thus cementing his starting berth under Sven Goran Eriksson.

Arsenals incredible success in integrating youth means Vela is in the perfect environment to develop. Making an impact in European football to the same extent as Sanchez is more than possible - but Carlos will be his own man, and rightfully so.

Watch goals by Salomon Kalou and Park Ji-Sung during Chelsea 1-1 Man Utd from the Barclays English Premier League at Stamford Bridge. A thrilling game – obviously – that started without Deco out injured during practice. An Evra move that resulted in a Berbatov shot saved by Petr Cech was snapped up by Park to give Man U the lead. Kalou headed in the equaliser but it came after a complete domination of the 2nd half and the latter 1st half by Chelsea. If not for the Kalou goal, Anelka would have gone back the most rueful having missed a fantastic Joe Cole cross. Didier Drogba and Cristiano Ronaldo who were expected to start didn’t and Drogba was the first one on at the start of the 2nd half – well, a little after the start cos of some confusion regarding a friendship band he was wearing. The band was discarded and Drogba was soon on but didn’t really stamp himself until right at the gong of the final whistle, which itself was a confusing moment with not many around sure if the whistle had been blown or not – just one of several in a controversial outing for referee Mike Riley.

BEIJING (AP) -- Iran’s wheelchair basketball team forfeited its game against the United States and withdrew from the Paralympics on Saturday, avoiding a possible match against Israel.

Iranian officials said the forfeit was prompted by a change in scheduling and denied the move was politically motivated. Iran and the United States have no diplomatic relations and the U.S. government has led efforts to persuade Iran to dismantle its nuclear enrichment program.

The International Paralympic Committee said Iran withdrew because the team was unhappy about “the draw proposed for the crossover round and subsequent schedule.”

The winner of the U.S.-Iran match would have gone on to meet the winner of Israel-Canada. Iran does not recognize Israel and bans any official contact with the Jewish state. Canada eventually beat Israel.

The U.S.-Iran quarterfinal was originally scheduled to be played at 11:15 a.m., following the first quarterfinal game between Canada and Israel at 9 a.m. But the starting times were switched, with no official announcement why the change was made.

“Each match should be done one after another,” Iran deputy chef de mission Iran Doust said. “But unfortunately, concerning our match they didn’t observe the order and that’s the reason (for pulling out).”

The game was to have aired live on Iranian television.

The U.S. team received notice of the time change about 24 hours before the match, said Jeannine Hansen, a spokeswoman for the American delegation. Teams were told before the Paralympics that competition times could change for television broadcasts or other reasons, she said.

“We agreed to the time change for the game with Iran, but we weren’t given a specific reason,” Hansen said.

The statement by the International Paralympic Committee said the IPC and the International Wheelchair Basketball Association “regret this decision taken by Iran and the disruption caused to the tournament.”

The statement did not mention any possible penalties for Iran. The IPC could not be reached for further comment.

The U.S. advanced into the semifinals with an automatic 20-0 win over Iran. The Americans will meet Canada, which beat Israel 55-47.

There had been other recent examples of Iran representatives pulling out of Olympic events involving Israel.

At the Beijing Olympics last month, Iranian swimmer Mohammad Alirezaei withdrew from a 100-meter breaststroke heat that included an Israeli competitor, citing illness. The International Olympic Committee said no violation had been found.

At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Iran’s judo world champion and gold-medal favorite Arash Miresmaeili did not compete against an Israeli opponent, publicly stating it was for political reasons. Iranian government officials were quoted in state media congratulating him for doing so.

Footbo, a social community network for football fans from all around the world has grown from strength to strength since it was launched in June 2008. And things are about to get even better!

Since its launch coinciding with Euro 2008, Footbo has stamped itself on the online map for football fans. The niche platform boasts an international network entirely dedicated to football and football-specific features ensuring that the football experience is unparalleled and was designed to enable world-wide interaction between football fans wherever they are and whoever they support.

Users have their own personal profile page where they identify their favourite teams and players, as well as choosing who would be their first-choice starting line-up, if they could pick any player. Combined with the latest news and content, updates on fixtures and results, and of course Footbo's flag-ship Prediction League and post-match Player Grading, the set-up is indeed close to being perfect.

Footbo has really come into its own by creating a platform where arm-chair fans have been able to interact with famous football analysts such as Guillem Balague, Raphael Honigstein and Gabriele Marcotti. Add to that the ability for fans to communicate with professional players, as was recently the case with Arsenal and Cameroon star Alexandre Song (who created a profile on the site and wrote blogs from the Olympics where he represented his national team) and Footbo is heading in a direction which will surely raise some eyebrows.

If that's not the kicker, here it comes - very soon, Footbo users will have a whole new world opened up to them. The social network will combine the professional world of football with the amateur one. What does that mean though? Footbo's Amateur Section will provide amateur players of all kind with a platform to show-case their talents and communicate with one another in an authentic environment. And the last sentence doesn't even do it justice.

What more can a football fan or football player ask for? The answer is nothing.

Live Nation Inc. said it had completed the sale of its motor-sports division to Feld Entertainment Inc. for $175 million and $30 million in possible future compensation.
Closely held Feld, of Vienna, Va., is a producer of family-oriented shows including Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey Circus and Disney on Ice. Chief Executive Kenneth Feld called the deal the single biggest expansion of Feld Entertainment in over 40 years. The division is to be renamed Feld Entertainment Motor Sports.
Live Nation Motor Sports, through its International Hot Rod Association and other divisions, stages races and monster-truck events such as Monster Jam. Such events last year accounted for around $164 million in revenue, or 4% of Live Nations total, according to the companys annual report.
Since Live Nation was spun off in 2005 from Clear Channel Communications Inc., the company has narrowed its focus to producing concerts and related businesses such as selling T-shirts. It has exited from businesses such as producing television shows, live theater and traveling museum exhibitions.

Bayern Munich’s manager Juergen Klinsmann knows Landon Donovan well. After all both are Southern California residents and Klinsmann had spent much of his time before taking the Germany manager job advising the Los Angeles Galaxy on football matters. So it should come as no surprise that Klinsmann almost lured Donovan to Germany this summer.
Steve Goff of the Washington Post reports that Bayern Munich wanted to take Donovan on loan this summer with an option to buy the player. Klinsmann wanted to buy the player outright but the Bayern board, mindful of Donovan’s failure at Bayer Leverkusen was more cautious wanting to take Donovan initially on loan. In any event, MLS rejected the loan to buy offer as Donovan’s departure could render MLS almost irrelevant to hardcore US National Team fans (some of whom believe it or not have already checked out on MLS entirely, and who like myself have viewed USL’s superior results over MLS in the CONCACAF Champions League as a clear indication as to MLS’ lack of quality) in the current US national team setup which features a vast majority of regular selections that play their club football abroad.
The reality of this situation is simple. MLS is seeing fewer and fewer key contributors to the US National team in its league and in actuality a smaller percentage of the youth national teams are now also being made up of MLS players. Consider these statistics:
1998 World Cup: 17 of 23 US players were MLS based
6 foreign players were MLS based
2002 World Cup: 12 of 23 US players were MLS based
0 foreign players were MLS based
2006 World Cup: 11 of 23 US players were MLS based
4 foreign players were MLS based (All four were from CONCACAF nations)
Now midway through World Cup qualifying, Bob Bradley selects between 5 to 7 MLS players for each qualifier, making the league less and less relevant to US National team fans. In my other venture, CSRNs American Soccer Show which is national team oriented we have reduced our MLS coverage and increased our coverage of Americans abroad because of this reality . If tracking the US national teams pool players is the goal of our coverage, MLS is simply becoming another league in the realm of Norway, Sweden and even Mexico as time goes on. The league is left with journeyman American players and players who are MLS lifers and who while being capped under Bruce Arena are less likely to see the field under a manager like Bradley who appears to have a clear bias towards players from European clubs.
While MLS may be less and less relevant to Bob Bradley and the national team, the best American player and the most marketable one remains in the league: Landon Donovan. A sale of Donovan would mean MLS would be left with US pool players who are either extremely young like Sacha Kljestan or at the end of the their careers after long spells abroad like Eddie Lewis. The league in no way would be able to represent itself as anything other than a retirement home or a developmental league. While from my perspective those labels would simply describe the league in a more honest fashion, that is not what MLS brass wants.
MLS has decided that charging a $40 million franchise fee for prospective expansion teams is an attractive investment. I don’t have the sort of cash lying around so I cannot truly asses the leagues values other than to state that on Forbes recent list of the richest football clubs in the world, only three MLS sides exceeded that value: one of course was the LA Galaxy which actually exceeded the $100 million mark.
In celebrity or non football circles, David Beckham makes the Galaxy attractive. However in American footballing cliques, which includes me, the interest in the Galaxy is simple: arguably the best ever American footballer plays for that club and plays in Major League Soccer. No doubt a move to Bayern Munich with a manager who understands the American player and Southern California lifestyle Donovan clings to would have been a marriage made in heaven, but for MLS’ viability and credibility the sale of Donovan may have represented a fatal blow.

Greater League Soccer Talk Chat Is Live

Eighteen months ago I had a unique experience while taking a Hertz rental car bus for the seemingly endless miles from the rental car facility to my terminal at Denver International Airport. Several Brazilians were on the bus with me each curious about footballing setup here in the United States. They had known Romario and Zinho had played for Miami FC but I had to explain to them that was in fact a second division club. When I mentioned the players in MLS from Brazil I got stares and even some laughs.  When talking about Beckham and Blanco signing with MLS I got more laughs. “Those aren’t real footballers,” was one of the responses. Then I said ” well Schelotto signed today for an MLS club in Ohio.”
Suddenly the conversation changed. Guille, one of the Brazilians asked? I said, yes Guille.  “Why would he play HERE?”  I did not know until that moment what a legend Guille was in South America. Sure I knew all about his exploits with Boca Juniors. After all I live in South Florida where Boca is probably more popular than the local sporting teams other than the Miami Dolphins and College Football’s Miami Hurricanes. That’s how large our Argentine population is down here.
What I did not realize was the Schelotto’s exploits in Copa Libertadoras had made him one of the biggest names in South America. I was instantly told he was bigger and better than Beckham. “We see alot of Real Madrid in Brazil and Beckham is not a true footballer,” I was told. Now perhaps its a cultural bias because when I hear true footballer I see images of Bobby Moore, Kevin Keagan and Geoff Hurst, while the folks I was conversing with obviously did not see English players as true footballers. My orientation is such that I see Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and even Blanco as unsporting cheats while I think of someone like Teddy Sheringham, Paul Ince or Alan Shearer as the embodiement of a footballer.
However, the heads up those Brazilian tourists gave me about Schelotto was spot on. As one of the most decorated players in Argentine club history, his signing by MLS was far from automatic or logical like the signings of Beckham and Blanco. Unlike Blanco, clubs in Europe were interested in Schelotto, and unlike Beckham he had no personal affinity for the United States.
The signing has been massive. Schelotto is the best field player in MLS. He has essentially led a group of journeymen players and youth/developmental types to be clearly the best team in the league. At one point he had played a role in ten straight Columbus goals. Can you imagine that? Moreover his class on the ball and on set pieces is unrivaled in MLS since perhaps the retirement of Carlos Valderrama.
Schelotto’s success often times looks like that of a seasoned accomplished professional showing up a group recretational league players. After all the standard of MLS is nowhere near the standard of Argentine football but with signings like Guille, the future can only be bright for the Crew and MLS.
