Recently the LPGA and its Commissioner, Carolyn Bivens, has been at the center of a storm of controversy concerning the organization’s intent to suspend players who did not speak English. This proposed action was swiftly deemed discriminatory by some lawmakers and a few corporate sponsors.

Let’s try to examine this issue rationally and logically. As we all know, each tournament features a Pro-Am event preceding the major competition. Amateurs fork over large amounts of entry monies to participate in these Pro-Am events, principally for a chance to play with the professionals, of course. Would any of us be happy if we turned over a considerable chunk of change only to find that we couldn’t even communicate with the pro in our group.

Lehman's holding company filed for bankruptcy Sept. 15 claiming $639 billion in assets, using four-month-old data. The wholly owned brokerage unit shrank to less than $100 billion in assets from $500 billion ``a few months ago,'' according to a Sept. 19 court statement by James Giddens, the trustee overseeing the settling of Lehman brokerage customer accounts by the Securities Investor Protection Corp. The loss in value was caused by ``changes in the market,'' according to Giddens, a partner at law firm Hughes Hubbard Reed, who spoke at a bankruptcy court hearing in Manhattan. There was a similar capital flight from Bear Stearns earlier this year, he said. Most of Lehman's pre-bankruptcy assets were securities, according to its balance sheets. Lehman said on Sept. 10 that the consolidated gross assets of the firm stood at $600 billion and net assets at $311 billion. The difference between net and gross is the so-called matched book, which is overnight lending or securities pledged for overnight borrowing. Giddens didn't return calls yesterday seeking comment on his statement. SIPC President Stephen Harbeck said he'd seen the brokerage's latest asset totals and couldn't remember the numbers, which ``we don't need to know to do our job'' of settling the 630,000 customer accounts.

Last week I was in Girdwood, Alaska to give a green living and business trends presentation to the amazing members of the Anthony Robbins Platinum Partnership which brings together dynamic folks from around the world who meet throughout the year in some of the most breathtaking places on earth. I arrived on Monday after finishing up shooting in Los Angeles for my Lazy Environmentalist television pilot and was suddenly surrounded by the jagged snowcapped peaks of the Churgach mountains as we traveled south from Anchorage along the Seward Highway. The road winds along the Turnagain Arm of the Chickaloon Bay. We pulled over to watch whales playing in the water and spotted a couple of Bald eagles flying overhead. After presenting that afternoon I got to hang out with the members and accompany them the next day to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center where we set about planting trees and clearing fields. The center is home to animals such as bison, elk, moose, and bear. It’s one of the most extraordinary places I’ve ever visited and was a much needed day to reconnect on a deep level with the sheer power, diversity and magnificence of nature. It reignited for me so many of the reasons why we do the work to accelerate positive environmental change. These pics are evidence that this Lazy Environmentalist was not so lazy – at least for a day.

Let me tell ya a little story... once upon a time I was putting laundry away. And as I round the corner into my bedroom I see Patrick doing squats.... NAKED! WHAT?! yea that's right SQUATS NAKED! After dropping all my laundry in shock and laughing for probably 5 straight minutes, I had to ask...Why was he lifting weights naked? His explanation... he was waiting for the water in the shower to get warm and thought he would fit in a few sets. Random! Needless to say he was a bit surprised by my entrance... I mean how often do I actually put laundry away anyway, and what are the chances that I would catch him in this brief naked moment. I know this might be too much information... but I had to tell someone. I was laughing all morning! (Now normally I find Patrick extremely attractive but this is not good naked... for all you husbands out there steer clear of naked squats when trying to attract your spouse!) love you honey.

There is a lot at stake in Golf right now. Businesses are starting to fret over the economy and reacting to the market by pulling back on unnecessary expenses. At the top of the golf economy we are going to see things like golf event sponsorships and advertising not renewing their contracts or canceling them all together. At the bottom of the golf economy is the public golfer who is going to think twice on playing golf or paying for gas. All along the middle of the golf economy..the country clubs, golf resorts, retail and business golfers, are going to start pulling back.
As a result, it is going to make it hard for golfers to get what they WANT.

Headed up to New Jersey's newest Disc Golf Course, the 9 Hole Fields of Dreams Disc Golf Course in Great Meadow, New Jersey. I strted my first round at 7:30AM. I really enjoyed playing this course and my hats off to the course designer(s) and everyone that worked hard to carve this course out of a heavily wooded lower elevation section of the park. There are two tees per hole and plans to expand the course to 18 holes over the winter. The course officially opens on 20 September. The course website is fodcourse.com.

A lot of the growth in the GDP was from such unproductive activities as building sprawl, rebuilding from disasters such as Katrina, exercising the military, etc. If the Japanese built a factory and we built a housing development 1 hour from Phoenix, who has done better?  Japan has almost no crime.  Part of our GDP comes from replacing smashed windows and stolen GPS units.
Another factor to consider is deficit spending. We had ourselves a huge party of low interest rates and deficit-spending by the Federales. That made for good-looking GDP figures, but has saddled our nation with a lot of debt. For some perverse reason, probably because the CPI is fraudulently calculated, that hasnt shown up in inflation that would erase the real GDP growth (if inflation is understated by 2.2% per year, all of the growth mentioned in the article evaporates). Investors, however, are harder to fool and the dollar is now worth much less.
The final problem with these numbers is that they dont take into account population growth. The author compares the U.S., which every day welcomes more immigrants to its shores, to countries that dont have much in the way of immigration or population growth (Japans is negative). One way to have GDP growth is simply to host more people and as long as they can scratch up something to eat or do child care for each other, that builds the GDP. It does not make Americans who were here before the immigrants arrived necessarily better off. In fact, we are probably worse off from all of the population growth because our roads are so clogged with traffic and housing has become so expensive.
We have inefficient local, state, and federal governments, high corporate taxes, enormous pension obligations to former employees of governments and big companies, and schools that are measurably worse than those of many other countries.  Could it be that the developed nations mentioned in the WSJ article are even more inefficient than we are.
