Is it the war in Iraq? Health care for all? Illegal immigration? Surely it's the economy, right?
Wrong.
The most important issue in this election, the one that cannot be ignored under any circumstances, is global warming and climate change.
I don't care whether you believe in it or not, never mind that it's been confirmed to hell and back and the real debate is whether man caused it. To me, it's as simple as Pascal's Wager. If you believe global warming exists, and it turns out it doesn't, maybe you've spent some money on some things you didn't strictly need. Not the first time humans have done that. Maybe you even benefit from making those preparations. You reduce our dependence on foreign oil and thus our dependence on countries that hate us. You could just plain improve the quality of life for the average American.
Particularly important in these times, you could stimulate the economy with the investment. I don't want to hear Republicans whining to me about how we should "let the market decide" and "government interference is bad" and about how if we wanted solar and wind, the market would have made us all convert a long time ago. Horseshit. Coal and oil have been subsidized for years; a true "free-market" Republican would repeal those subsidies today, but of course, they won't. Any economist will tell you that when the economy gets tough, the best way to bring it out of the doldrums is to spend government money on investment, not tax cuts, because government investments create jobs and the government not only spends money on the people, it also directly buys from American companies who pass on the money they make to their employees.
But if you decide global warming doesn't exist and you don't need to do anything? And it turns out it does? Then... then you're screwed. Here's just a short summary of what could happen: more extreme weather conditions on both ends of the spectrum (don't you dare get the snowstorm of the century and say "what global warming?"), tropical regions (which means mostly third world countries)becoming desert and formerly fridgid climates becoming the world's new breadbasket, rising sea levels resulting in catastrophe for coastal cities and maybe even wiping out small, low-lying islands, declining oxygen in the world's oceans causing a complete breakdown in the global ecosystem, droughts galore and increased salt penetration into groundwater, diseases, all leading to more conflicts around the globe like what's going on in Darfur,maybe even the release of methane from the world's oceans and from Siberia potentially contributing further to global warming until the whole planet essentially becomes Venus. Oh, and it could mean more illegal immigrants crossing our border, more Iraq conflicts, and universal healthcare suddenly seeming like a quaint utopian goal.
You invest in stopping global warming, you help bring the economy out of what now looks like inevitable if not in-progress recession - you don't invest in stopping global warming, and the recession may never end.

New Orleans, LA
#142 Southern Methodist (1-3) vs. #101 Tulane (1-2)
SMU: The Mustangs got clobbered by the TCU Horned Frogs to the tune of 48-7. SMUs spread offense put up only 218 yards of passing, with QB Bo Levi Mitchell throwing 2 interceptions, and getting sacked 3 times for minus 3 yards. Mustang RBs combined for 5 yards on 5 carries. Meanwhile, the Horned Frogs carved up the SMU defense for nearly 500 yards, SMU has given up an average 45.8 points per game, 3rd worst in the country, leads the nation in interceptions thrown (tied with Washington State at 10 over 4 games), and is dead last in rushing yards per game.
TULANE: The Green Wave downed the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks by a score of 24-10. Tulane RB Andre Anderson carried the ball 38 times for 157 yards and 1 TD, and had a pair of receptions for 20 yards. The Green Wave defense throttled the Warhawk offense, allowing only 28 total net yards in the first half, and forcing punts on every possession. The Tulane defense ranks 7th in the nation in yards allowed per game.
Line: Wave by 17. Tulane is 11-5 against SMU, and has won 6 of the last 7 contests. Last year, the Green Wave needed overtime to beat the Mustangs 41-34. (CBS)

Ames, IA
#36 Northwestern (4-0) vs. #39 Iowa (3-1)
NORTHWESTERN: For the 1st time since 1962, the Wildcats are undefeated entering week 5, beating the 0-4 Ohio Bobcats last Saturday 16-8. Northwestern had an opening drive of 70 yards and over 200 yards in the first half, but then went into hibernation. QB C J Bacher threw 4 interceptions. It took the Wildcat defense and 2 blocked field goals to win the game. Northwesterns defense is limiting opponents to 11.3 ppg, 13th best in the country.
IOWA: The Hawkeyes lost on the road against the Pitt Panthers by a score of 21-20. Iowa outgained Pitt in total net yards by 361 to 259, but Pitt made the big plays when the game was on the line. Iowa RB Shonn Greene rushed for 147 yards on 23 carries, and 1 TD. The Hawkeye defense is limiting opponents to 7.3 ppg, 5th best in the country.
Line: Hawkeyes by 8. Iowa holds a big edge in the series, 46-20-3, but the rivalry has been close in recent years. Iowa won last years contest by a score of 28-17. (ESPN Classic)
3. No BCS Busters Here
Raleigh, NC
#83 Houston (1-3) vs. #23 East Carolina (3-1)
HOUSTON: Trailing 28-25 on the road against the Colorado State Rams, facing a 3rd and goal with 8 seconds remaining on the clock, Cougar QB Case Keenum threw short into the end zone and was picked off to end the game. The Cougars have now lost 3 in a row. Keenum finished 37 out of 54 passes for 380 yards and 3 TDs, but he was also intercepted 3 times.
ECU: The Pirates lost on the road in overtime 30-24 to the 2-2 North Carolina State Wolfpack, ending the Pirates dreams of a possible BCS berth. The Pirates took a 24-17 lead on a 4th quarter FG, but the Pirate defense couldnt hold back the Wolfpack. NC State tied the score with just over a minute to play. In overtime, Pirate star QB Patrick Pinckney was blindsided on a roll out right, and lost the ball. NC State scored in its 1st possession to win the game.
Line: Pirates by 10. East Carolina is 5-3 versus Houston, and won last year by a score of 37-35. (ESPN U).
4. Nine Dwarves Double Elimination Playoff Game #2
Pullman, WA
#26 Oregon (3-1) vs. #98 Washington State (1-3)
OREGON: The Ducks were defeated at home by the Boise State Broncos by a score of 37-32. Oregon started their third string sophomore QB Jeremiah Masoli and was leading 6-0 in the first quarter, when Masoli was hit and had to leave the game with a concussion. His replacement, frosh QB Chris Harper was ineffective, and the Ducks only other score came after an interception in the second quarter. In the meantime, the Duck secondary proved porous; as Bronco QB Kellen Moore threw for 385 yards and 3 TDs. Boise surged to a 38-13 lead. In the 4th quarter, the Ducks 5th string QB, Darron Thomas, made his debut and led an impressive comeback, throwing for 206 yards and 3 TDs. Head Coach Mike Belotti stated the obvious, I shouldve made the call earlier to get him in the game.
WSU: The Cougars finally won a game, beating the FCS Big Sky Conference Portland State Vikings by a score 48-9. Starting QB Kevin Lopina and backup QB Gary Rogers were both knocked out of the game by concussions, Rogers lost for the season. Third string QB Marshall Lobbestaal filled in nicely, throwing for 2 TDs. The Cougars had over 600 yards of total offense, while limiting the Vikings to 246 total net yards, and 8 net yards rushing.
Line: Ducks by 19 points. Oregon leads the close-fought series 42-36-7, with the average score Ducks 19, Cougs 17. Oregon won last years contest by a record 53-7 in Eugene. (FSN)
Nine Dwarves Double Elimination Playoff Implications: WSU will be officially eliminated in the playoffs with a loss. Oregons playoff chances will be dramatically reduced with a loss. In Seattle, the Stanford Cardinal can officially eliminate the Washington Huskies with a win. Oregon State could throw the entire playoff into chaos if they win at home against USC on Thursday night, making it two upsets in a row at Reser Stadium in Corvallis.
5. Battle of the SEC Also-rans
Auburn, AL
#40 Tennessee (1-2) vs. #15 Auburn (3-1)
TENNESSEE: The Vols self-destructed in front of the home crowd at Neyland Stadium, losing for the 4th straight time to their SEC East rival Florida Gators by a score of 30-6. Three factors did in the Tennesseans. First, the Volunteers spotted the Gators an easy field goal by fumbling on their 1st possession. Second, consecutive Volunteer drives to the red zone ended in disasters, with QB Jonathan Crompton fumbling away the ball on one occasion, and then throwing the ball to a player in a blue and red jersey on another. Third, Gator return specialist Brandon James had a big day, returning one punt 78 yards for a touchdown, and returning a kickoff 50 yards to set up another Gator score. Volunteer fans bolted for the exits midway through the 3rd quarter.
AUBURN: Auburn lost the Tiger Bowl to LSU by a score of 26-21, even though Auburn was leading at the half 14-3 in front of the home crowd, and the Auburn defense had bottled up LSU, allowing only 6 first downs. For the year, the Tiger defense is allowing only 10.3 ppg, 10th best in the country. For 6 of the last 8 years, the winner of this game has gone on to the SEC championship game. Despite the loss, the coaching staff insists that Auburn is still alive for the SEC championship game, and maybe should throw the ball more, but who are they kidding? The loser of the Tiger Bowl has gone to the SEC championship game in exactly 0 of the last 8 years.
Line: Tigers by 5 points. Auburn is 25-21-3 against Tennessee, and has won 3 in a row, including the 2004 SEC championship game the last time the 2 teams played. Between 1956 and 1991, the 2 teams met every year. Since the conference split into 2 divisions in 1992, the teams have met in regular season action only 4 times. (ABC)
6. FBS Bottom 10 Game
El Paso, TX
#87 Central Florida (1-2) vs. #136 UTEP (0-3)
UCF: The Knights were crushed by the Boston College Eagles by a score of 34-7. Central Florida has an anemic offense, averaging a woeful 16 ppg, 10th worst in the country. Head Coach George OLeary blamed the QB and the K for the loss. UCF QBs combined for only 129 yards and 4 interceptions, while the kicker missed on 2 chip shots from 25 yards away. You cant blow field goals, OLeary complained. From snapper to holder to kicker we just didnt get it done.
UTEP: The Miners lost to the visiting New Mexico State Aggies by a single point, 34-33. NMSU broke a six-game losing streak with the victory. The UTEP defense stuffed the Aggie run game, but surrendered 329 passing yards and 5 TD passes through the air. The UTEP offense relied on a steady run game, with RB James Thomas carrying for 142 yards in 29 tries, and scoring 2 rushing TDs. But after NMSU scored the go-ahead touchdown with 10 minutes to play, and the Miners marched methodically downfield to the NMSU 14-yard line, RB Vernon Frazier was stopped for no gain on first down, and then stripped of the ball on second down, to lose possession, and the game. The Miner defense is giving up 39.3 ppg, 7th worst in the country.
Line: Miners by 4 points. This is the second time the 2 Conference USA schools have met. Central Florida won at home last year by a score of 36-20 over UTEP. This game features a bad offense v. a bad defense. (ESPN Game Plan)
7. Pork Bellies are Down Right Now
Austin, TX
64 Arkansas (2-1) vs. #7 Texas (3-0)
ARKANSAS: The Razorbacks were on the short end of a 49-14 whipping in their SEC home season opener against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Arkansas QB Casey Dick threw 2 first half interception, both returned for touchdowns as the Tide rolled to a 35-7 halftime lead. The Razorback defense gave up 328 net yards rushing to Alabama. Arkansas has had to come from behind in both of their victories over the 1-3 Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks and the 2-2 FCS Gateway Conference Western Illinois Leathernecks. Arkansas is giving up over 33 ppg, last in the SEC conference.
TEXAS: The Longhorns steamrolled over Rice by a score of 52-10. QB Colt McCoy threw for 4 TDs, giving him a total of 62 for his career, setting a new Longhorn record. Texas had 600 yards of total offense, while the defense limited the Owls to a pathetic 17 net yards of rushing. If the Longhorns hadnt fumbled twice, the team might have scored on every possession. Texas has yet to face a quality opponent, but are 6th in scoring offense and 12th in fewest points allowed on defense. The Razorbacks wont provide much of a test for the Austinites.
Line: Longhorns by 28 points. Texas leads the series 55-21, but the 2 teams havent played since 2004. (ABC)
7. Halt, Who Goes There?
Corpus Christi, TX
#174 Army (0-3) vs. #65 Texas A M (1-2)
ARMY: The Black Knights lost to the Akron Zips 22-3, to drop to 0-3 for the first time since 2005 and extended its losing streak to 9 games. Turnovers did in Army, as the team fumbled six times, losing the ball 4 of the 6 times, and was intercepted once. Armys 6.7 ppg average is 2nd to last in the country.
A M: The Aggies were routed at home to the Miami Hurricanes by a score of 41-23. The game started great for A M, with a 62-yard TD pass from backup QB Jerrod Johnson to WR Mike Goodson on the first play from scrimmage. The game was close at the end of the 1st quarter with the Hurricanes taking a narrow lead, 14-10. Then, the Hurricanes put on a show and scored 27 unanswered points to put the game away early. The Aggie offense is last in scoring ppg in the Big 12, and the Aggie defense is last in ppg allowed in the conference as well.
Line: Aggies by a 28 point margin. A M is 2-1 in games against Army, beating the Black Knights in San Antonio 2 years ago by a 28-24 margin. (Versus)
9. Its Hot and My ACC Needs Fixing
Durham, NC
#59 Virginia (1-2) vs. #84 Duke (2-1)
UV: The Cavaliers had a bye last week, with an extra week to prepare for their ACC road opener. Virginias lone win came over the 3-1 FCS Colonial Division Richmond Spiders, and the teams two losses were blowout losses to #1 USC and the undefeated UConn Huskies by the scores of 52-7 and 45-10. The Cavaliers defense ranks last in the ACC in ppg allowed, and the offense ranks last in the ACC in ppg scored.
DUKE: The Blue Devils had a bye last week. The week 3 victory over the Navy Midshipmen gave Duke its second win of the season, the most wins in a season for Duke in over 3 years. Dukes only loss this year was a 24-20 nail-biter against the undefeated Northwestern Wildcats. This is Dukes 4th consecutive home game.
Line: Blue Devils by 7. The Cavaliers lead the series 32 games to 27, and Duke hasnt won a game against Virginia since the turn of the millennium. (CBS)
10. FCS Bottom 10 Game
Stony Brook, Long Island, NY
#157 Hofstra (1-2) vs. #196 Stony Brook (1-3)
HOFSTRA: The Pride (think Lions) captured their first victory with a FCS Colonial Conference home opener win over the Rhode Island Rams by a score of 23-20. Hofstra needed a last minute FG to preserve the victory. The Pride offense is averaging a disappointing 14 ppg, 12th worst in the conference. Hofstra operates the longest running public radio station and is the site for the third and last presidential debate between Senators McCain and Obama.
SUNYSB: The Seawolves were torpedoed by the Ivy League Brown Bears by a score of 17-7. Stony Brook managed only 147 total net yards, and scored their only points in the game on a 19-yard interception return. Stony Brook adopted the Seawolf mascot in 1994 with the move to the FCS conference, a mythical creature revered by the Alaskan Tlingit tribe based on the killer whale or orca. The university is a leading research center, and 3 professors were awarded the Nobel Prize last year for their research on climate change. Perhaps, with the melting of the polar ice cap, orcas will migrate through the newly formed Northwest Passage and wind up in Long Island some day.
Prediction: Seawolves finally win one, by a 6 point margin. This is a Long Island grudge match. Hofstra has won all 11 games in the series, including last years narrow 33-28 victory in Hempstead.

Nate Hunt and Ali Saleh are two college students from two totally different places but the have one thing in common, fantasy football. Hunt is in his last year at Quinnipiac University as a Diagnostic Imaging major. In a typical week Hunt spends 15 hours in class and another five on his schoolwork. Compare that to the time he spends on his fantasy football teams, three of them to be exact, Every Sunday I spend all day watching football usually from one in the afternoon until about eleven at night with some breaks here and there. I also watch Monday Night Football every week, Hunt said. That is about 13 hours a week watching football. I also spend about a half hour a day doing research for my leagues, picking up players, looking at match-ups, and other things. All in all Nate dedicates about 16 hours a week just for fantasy football.
Ali Saleh is in his last year at St. Johns University, studying to be a physicians assistant. Saleh has a big work load over at St. Johns I am usually in class Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until until 5 p.m. I also stay after my classes in the library studying and doing my work. School is basically a full-time job for Saleh but he still manages to fit in time for his two fantasy football teams, I will try to watch about five or six hours of football on Sunday but I usually miss the Monday night game. Saleh spends about two hours a week doing research for his teams and he finds time for that in between his classes.
Both Saleh and Hunt find the same dilemmas that most college students find, trying to make time for classes, homework, part-time jobs, and their social lives. Still both of them make time for fantasy football, but why? I have been doing it since high school so it is important to me, said Hunt. It is a good way to keep in touch with my friends back in Rhode Island while I am here at Quinnipiac. Saleh said, It is a great distraction for me and another reason to watch and love football. I take pride in winning against my friends and to talk a little trash while doing it.
Fantasy football has become a phenomenon for most of the country. Doctors, lawyers, college students and whoever else you can think of find time for it. While it is just fantasy football, for most people like Nate Hunt and Ali Saleh it is a reality.

At the game, the mood was fantastic. RJ received a standing ovation when he left after the seventh, the eighth and the ninth. We kept standing up to cheer expecting him to be pulled, but it was apparent that he wasnt going to leave until he got a win. And really, who could blame him? The Dbacks stagnant offense was trying to rob him of the run support he needed to earn the official win. Now, as you know, I think measuring wins and losses for individual performances is stupid, but it was exciting to watch someone so committed to achieving their goal. Randy wasnt going to lose this game to the Rockies if he had a say in the decision. Finally, after leaving in the ninth, and being replaced by a pinch hitter, the crowd roared in support of the offense, trying to help RJ out. It was one of the best moments of the year for me, especially in a town where baseball plays second fiddle (actually, like fifth fiddle) to other sports. Phoenix is not a baseball town so this felt special to see and hear the crowd chanting for him and standing up in appreciation.
Arizona will always have a special place in their heart for Randy. He was the first legitimate superstar to play ball in the desert (sorry Matt Williams and Luis Gonzales) and was directly responsible for the states first and only legitimate championship. Hes a first ballot hall of famer who will go in to the Hall wearing a Dbacks lid and he earned his 4000th strikeout while with the club (hes now second all time in Ks behind Nolan Ryan).
He is now five wins shy of the magic (and arbitrary) number of 300, a number that means very little in the context of Johnsons career. And if he does end up getting that win on another team next year, itll be unfortunate, but Ill watch it and cheer for one of the fiercest competitors Ive ever seen in person.

I didn't notice until like Sunday that the BSU vs. La Tech game is on a Wednesday... and Nicole and I do childcare stuff at the church on Wednesday nights. So I was like, crap, I won't get to watch it! But I talked to lady in charge of it all and she said I could take the night off. So sweet! I get to watch it!
But THAN I got to thinking. I'm probably just going to watch it at home by myself. That's kinda boring. Nicole's not even going to be home. I should see if I could score a free student ticket! So I texted my brother-in-law who is working that night, and sure enough. He is going to grab his student ticket today and give it to me so I can go. Sweet!
Than I realized, I don't really have anyone to go with? haha. So I am going to crash the tailgating bus party (the bus that all the lacrosse guys tailgate on before the game) and roll in with them. They always get right up front, and on T.V. like every game. So watch close, I could be on ESPN next week! :-)

This movie provides somewhat of an unconventional love story, which mixes individual insecurities with obsessive passion. Moreover, this movie is technically sound and amplifies the erotic nature of the film through the use of an unstable camera, which is used to make the audience feel that they are watching an amateur film shot by a sex voyeur. There is one shot where Penelope Cruz looks directly into the camera, which is self-reflexive, reminding the moviegoer that we are watching this sensual moment unfold.
Ben Kingsley plays David Kepesh, a teacher who is also a playboy content with his ongoing emotionally detached relations with women. Previously married, he understands the complexities of relationships when feelings are involved. Therefore, it seems that as a wiser and older man astute to society’s perplexities, he would rather not get more involved with the opposite sex outside of the physical pleasures they provide him. This independent thinking may have worked fine until he got involved with his student, Consuela Castillo, played by Penelope Cruz. He is completely enthralled with her and he is overwhelmed by her striking beauty. When their connection is apparent, it seems that David will treat this relationship with a shallow disregard that he may be accustomed to under normal circumstances. However, he ends up falling for her and instantly becomes jealous and possessive. He wonders if she is dating other men when she is not with him, among other insecure thoughts. Penelope Cruz ends up reciprocating the passion that David has for her, but is consistently frustrated with his display of ignorance when it comes to long-term talk of their relationship. The insecurities in their relationship stem from deeper problematic issues, which include their age difference, supposedly in the area of 30 years, among other things. Through everything that plagues both characters, this movie defines love and beauty more accurately than can be digested. Eroticism and passion are depicted in a pure and beautiful way that is unparalleled.
The interesting thing about this movie that works really well is the use of narration from Ben Kingsley’s character. The narration during certain parts of the movie is candid about what David Kepesh is really thinking, and provides comic relief at times. Narration is used sparingly much of the time in film because if it is not inserted strategically, it may ruin the overall effect of the movie. In this case, it adds so much more. Another movie that you might want to check out that uses narration questionably is Little Children (2007).
Love and Life 101: As Dave kissed Consuela’s forehead and held her face in his palms, I could not help but feel the beauty that radiated from their relationship. It was a perfect moment, as complete silence aides the humanism displayed in this scene. As Dave’s confidante in the film, George O’Hearn (played by Dennis Hopper), educates him on the essentials of life and love, it is a consensus that it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. Is this statement really acceptable? The pain that comes from loving and losing seems unbearable, and I know that most of you have experienced the heart-wrenching distress of past breakups. When you share so much of your life with that one special person, and then that person is gone or you become distanced, your heart has to learn to heal and you have nothing left to do but move on. Like Dave, most of us experience trust issues in relationships as well. We do not want to know that someone could be playing games with the most fragile intangible item that each of us possess: our heart. But, I guess some people really do go through their whole lives without being in love, and this could be more detrimental than losing a love. Okay, enough about that I really could go on and on! You will be ponder all of these issues after seeing this endearing movie. The acting was superb with the entire cast. I highly recommend this film.

Linda’s got enough problems that I’m not pressing. I don’t want to pressure her over packing up the house that she lived in with Sid for lo, those many years. I don’t think I have any place to do that. So my stance is to be there for her, to help in any way I can, and accompany her. I listen well, if she wants to talk, and much of what she says is interesting. I am learning a lot about life in mid-America from her. There are entire value systems I am becoming familiar with. My mother wasn’t near the social arbiter she thought she was.
I now have a cell phone, again. I thought I was through with that kind of life after leaving Houston and the David debacle. But Linda thought I needed one for the trip. Well, I suppose I do. So I’m the carrier of a Virgin Mobile phone. It’s interesting to be back on the air. Now all I have to do is top it up ever so often, and I’ll still have it. Of course, once I get back here I may not even want it, but that’s why I got a Virgin phone: it’s disposable. Right now I’m running a battery test, to see how long it’ll sit there on standby. I also need to check and see how long it’ll operate while talking. Got it at our local Radio Shack. I found out that Sprint bought out all the distribution here. There’s Sprint in WalMart – along with AT T plus another carrier I forget – and a Sprint store in the mall (three miles away), then one two miles away from the mall near the freeway. Seems like overkill, but then maybe they’re aiming for market saturation. Personally, I didn’t get a Sprint phone because it’d run me $450. That’s buying the phone, activating, paying a pro-rated month plus the next month, then the $200 deposit, based on my lack of credit rating. And the monthly $99 for unlimited use is WAY beyond my limited budget. So Virgin Mobile was the way to go.
Today I seem to be taking off. I’m not really interested in going anywhere, although I might later – maybe to Jim’s. Yesterday I went to Linda’s doctor’s office with her, as she wasn’t feeling well and I thought it’d be a good time to talk about stuff. We did, which is why I got the phone. This morning I opted out of going to coffee with Jim. Marty’s off riding today – he’s a motorcycler, like Jerry – and his absence cuts down on the conversation at the table because I don’t talk much.

I’m getting curious about Colorado. I don’t know how cold it’s gonna be up there. I’m taking most of my winter clothes, but I’m NOT taking my boots – seems like too much to carry, so I’m gonna make do with my walking shoes (the old tennis shoe configured with extra heel support) and socks. I’m only taking two pair of jeans. I have a baggage limitation of what I can carry comfortably, and I already have the two medical bags: one with the CPAP and one with my pill bottles. Oh, my pill bottles don’t fill up the second bag, but I’m putting my toiletries and pill planner in there, too.

Jim advised me yesterday at coffee to quite literally forget completely about Jackie and everyone in this apartment complex while I’m gone. I will do my best, and if I’m careful I won’t think about her at all. With my cell phone number kept to myself, I won’t have to put up with phone calls (like I do now with the house phone shut off) and there won’t be any mail. So there won’t be any contact. Whew.
Which leaves me out in the cold where Vivian’s concerned. I do want to send her letters, to keep her spirits up while I’m out of pocket. I can do that reasonably easily, because she doesn’t speak to Jackie anyway. I can always tell Dorothy Happy Birthday before I leave, so that’ll preclude any contact from me while I’m there. The only contact other’n Viv will be my letter to Edie the manager when I send her the rent check for November. And that’ll be when we’re fixing to leave to come back down here. So I’m safe for the two months. I CAN let go.
I think my biggest thing right now is whether I can use Linda’s laptop to write and send email. If I can send email I can keep in contact, and with that internet access I can send blog posts. Otherwise I’ll have to handwrite my daily thoughts and type them all in when I get home. Even that won’t be all THAT bad. It’ll probably cut down on some of the verbiage.

Then there’s the Tao Te Ching, the Chinese book of philosophy, the ever-illuminating Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth, and The Science Of Mind text (which I haven’t even cracked open yet).
Ah, I know why I’m so antsy. I didn’t get up and meditate this morning. Slept right past the 4 a.m. usual time. The first I remember waking up was 5:52 a.m., too late to get in an hour of quiet sitting. I’ve been doing an hour recently, and it’s really pretty smoothing. Especially since I changed from sitting on the edge of the recliner (constant swaying back and forth) to a straight chair (much more stable). I’m seriously considering getting a zafu, a Zen meditation cushion. I’ll have to wait, though, I don’t want to be getting something I may not use. Gotta see if I’ll even use one – and that means contemplation of the whole idea of meditation. Is it something I’m going to continue? Or is this a flash in the pan?

There’s lots of reinforcement of this “flash in the pan” concept from my childhood. My folks often – interminably, it seems – would put me off them getting me something as a child because my mother (and later my father) would not only balk at the getting, but would attack me for wanting something. As years went by this led to a serious refusal on my part to use anything I got. Example: Sherry bought a t-shirt for me which reads “May the forest be with you” under a scene of redwoods. I didn’t wear it (it’s flocked and will eventually bare itself in the wash) because I wanted to save it. Now, finally, I’ve gotten it out and am wearing it. Somehow it’s lost its magic. Oh, the slogan’s still timely enough, I just don’t think it’s such a prized possession anymore.
So in keeping me from being spoiled rotten as a child – giving me everything I wanted whenever I wanted it – my parents refused me no end, and taught me the value of working to get something. Ruined me forever when it comes to unbridled spending on credit cards and consumer debt. Now that I’m on disability, I can’t afford to go buy stuff. So there’s a fitting denouement.
This almost pathological reluctance to spend money led to my being excoriated by Sherry for not getting myself something I NEEDED, much less wanted. She saw the value of living for the moment, and I only saw Duke’s eternal putting off, saving. Well, Duke’s saving led to a nice inheritance for each of us kids, which I managed to spend in a couple of years (normal per statistics) and I have nothing left. Oh, well, now to go to Austin and claim my Mega-Millions Jackpot prize. All I have to do is buy a ticket.
That’s another thing: I DO buy a ticket. I spend $10 a month getting a single quick-pick for ten drawings. That lasts me through the month. Or if it doesn’t, I just go get another one on the 3rd or 4th, after my check hits. I figure I can wager that much without breaking the bank. And there’s always the chance of hitting the Big One sooner rather than later. I just tend to limit the Universe (God) by wanting $45 million take home. I think I’ll get wise and just ask for the Jackpot. That’ll open it up considerably.
I have a housefly zooming around in here. I Googled “All About Houseflies” and learned that the little buggers live a month inside where it’s nice weather and there’s food – or water. Also all about how they are transmitters of disease. So there really IS a reason for flyswatters. Glad I have a couple. Now to chase down this little shit…
No such luck. My intent scared him (or her) off. Funny how they always know when you’re on their trail. Maybe it’s that first missed swat that alerts them.
I’ve learned that flies don’t mature into full-sized adults when there isn’t adequate food/water. Well, there’s plenty of water in here – I have been running water in the sink every day, washing dishes – but I only recently contributed to the actual food supply when I threw banana peels into the trash. So they really do have a food source. Dammit. Houseflies are almost as bad as mosquitoes. I really like living upstairs because there aren’t many skeeters that get up here. Then again, there aren’t that many skeeters in this part of the world anyway. It’s usually dry here. Thank God. That’s one of the reasons I love it here so much more than living in Houston: no humidity. Or at least less than 40% usually. In Houston if the humidity drops below 80% they go on water rationing. Sure glad I’m not there.

I Googled Linda’s address in Colorado. Holy Cow. She’s at the very top end of the road. That means – as she had warned me – that it’s a lot of hairpin turns with no guardrails. Oh, well, have to go up there somehow. I’ll make it, if she can. And I think she’ll just drive right on up. There are apparently a lot of houses up there. It’ll be interesting.

I went by Radio Shack and got another $30 worth of air time on the Virgin Mobile cell phone. What a rip-off. The brochures and the web site all talk about minute packs for various amounts of money, when you can’t buy a minute pack without buying a chunk of air time at 20 cents a minute. It’s all about the money. Well, at least the Radio Shack guy knows how it works now. He was selling the phones on the idea you could get that cheaper rate just by buying one of the top-up cards. It ain’t so. Thus I’ve spent $60 on 20 cents a minute air time in just two days. Not good. I’m going to be sure that if I make any long distance calls, it’ll be from a regular phone, using my long distance card. Yeah, it takes a few minutes to punch in all those numbers, but hey – it’s only 6 cents a minute. Now to tell my sister about the problem, so when she calls I’ll be able to get to a phone and call her back. Same with Jim.
Tonight I was talking to Vivian on her porch when Jackie came by. She talked to us loudly about irrelevant stuff, then asked me what I was doing later. I told her I was packing. She groused some and then drove off. I’m pushing away.
Went by the grocery store today and bought food. A lot of it is perishable, but I wanted to eat, not keep snacking while waiting to leave. Now that I’ve bought groceries, we’ll go. Works every time.

Neither team exhibited much rhythm and attacking opportunities were sparse - especially in a dull first half dominated (and I use the term loosely) by Mexico.
In fact, the only two real scoring opportunities of the opening 45 minutes provided bookends to the half. In the second minute a Chilean defender came close to scoring an own goal, while Chile striker Fabian Orellana produced the game's sole moment of intoxicating brilliance on the right wing, beating three Mexican defenders and unleashing a shot in stoppage time.
The second half goal came as Valenzuela attempted to rather casually cut out a cross by striker Jose Fuenzalida from reaching a lurking forward behind him and knocked it in the net from a couple of yards out.
Overall though, not much value for money for the overwhelmingly pro-Mexican crowd of 32,924, many of whom not surprisingly didn't stick around long and headed for the exits early.
Updated: That's the first time I've heard a post-game press conference conducted in the three languages of Spanish, English and Swedish, but Mexico Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson didn't have much to say in any of them.

The dictionary defines bureaucracy as follows:
1.government by many bureaus, administrators, and petty officials.
2.the body of officials and administrators, esp. of a government or government department.
3.excessive multiplication of, and concentration of power in, administrative bureaus or administrators.
4. administration characterized by excessive red tape and routine.
I love the petty official part of the definition. Do you suppose that is on the job application for government officials? Do you posses the skill to be petty? Also are able to thrive in an environment where nothing makes sense? Then great you are hired.
I have added my own definition as well:
5. A system developed to suck away people's life source and will to live until all that is left is a crumpled shell of a human being.
So if not actually dead, possessing many of the same characteristics such as lifelessness and loss of color. And if bureaucracy doesn't literally kill me, it may cause me to pull all my hair out leaving me bald and unable to show my face in public. Hence rendering me dead to all who know me.
Yesterday bureaucracy kicked my can to Timbuktu and back again. Here are just a few of the brick walls I have been hitting me head against lately.
My car needs to be smogged.
I was suppose to register it last Friday.
When my car was tested, it did not pass the test.
Not because it is emitting harmful toxic waste into the atmosphere, no because the computer in the car does not have enough information.
Somehow it had been reset to zero and so that makes the government think that it has been tampered with.
It is a 2005 for crying out loud, how is it not passing the test?
The guy helping me who looked like he just got out of jail, wasn't really all that helpful or clear about what I should do about the problem.
I went to my mechanic. Yeah, they weren't really sure what to do about it either.
So I was able to attend the joyful DMV in person and get an extension.
But I still am not really sure what to do. Maybe I could give up driving. That would go well with my plan to hide in a corner and ignore all my responsibilities.
Trent does not want to take Zoology.
A new regulation wants kids to have 3 science credits for something called the 21st century diploma,
Trent has 2.5 science credits,
You can graduate with a standard diploma with 2 science credits,
The school refused to drop him from Zoology until he registered in an independent study science class,
Trent's mother has been otherwise occupied with things like doctor appointments, grief over son's permanent disability, being out of town, and the worst head cold known to man.
Trent has been in to talk with the counselor about this several times
Trent has not attended the class even once in four weeks, because in his mind he has already dropped it,
Yesterday was the last day to officially drop the class, otherwise he would just get a "F" on his transcript.
After a twenty minute conversation with the counselor where things like "rules are rules" "that's just the way it is", "lump it or leave it" were bandied about, I was force to put my hands around the counselors throat. Seriously I did it, in a joking way more or less of course, but in my mind I was more not so much less.
After this attempt on the counselors life, I asked about the standard diploma
She then informed me that there is the option of waiving the 21st century requirement.
After I recovered from my seizure, I said for sure we were interested in that option.
She informed me that they can not find the form that needs to be filled out to waive the requirement.
Of course not.
This is the letter I sent to school with Trent yesterday:

I give my permission for Trenton Hammond to waive the 21st Century science requirement. I understand that he will graduate with only 2 science credits. When the form to officially waive this requirement is found, I will be happy to fill it out.

My doctor leaves an ominous message on my answering machine
After a fun filled morning spent taking Jared to various appointments, I returned to my home for sanctuary.
I was met with a flashing message light on my phone.
The message was my doctor, informing me that she needed to talk to me about my blood work from the previous day.
She didn't say what was wrong, but conveyed that it was a serious matter and would I please call back and leave a number she could contact me with that day.
I called back, left the number and asked if the receptionist could tell me the results.
No sirree! The doctor is the only one who can give out results over the phone.
Well isn't that special.
So I had a fun filled afternoon of suspense and worry where I played through scenarios of my impending death.
Finally she got a hold of me, and told me that my Triglyceride cholesterol number went from a normal, healthy 115 last year to 375 this year. I don't even know what to think about this.
I really can not pin point how my diet is that different this year than last. One thing is that I did eat a whole bag of cheese curds the day before the test. Perhaps that skewed the test, but really would it be that much off. I kind of doubt it.
This month I will watch what I eat and take the test again. Maybe it is a mistake. That seems like an awfully big jump.
Of course the whole answer to much of what is wrong in my life would be to exercise. It is too bad driving ill tempered, teenage boys to doctor appointments doesn't count as exercise.

Worst start, offense. Arian Foster's 15-yard personal foul early in Tennessee's first drive, driving the team back into the Red Zone Allergen where Montario Hardesty fumbled the ball on the next play. Beginning the second drive of the game on your opponent's side of the field? Exhilarating! Tangent: pooponent is one of many fine ways of mis-typing
Worst start, defense. Being victimized by The Jump Pass on Florida's first drive of the game.
Best insult to injury. Verne Lundquist, who is apparently tired of seeing this play work. Paraphrase: Fool me once, fool me twice. But fool me three times? It's not like it's not in the repertoire.
Best idea. Honoring Al Wilson before the game and having him speak to the team to fire them up.
Worst response. Um, the team. When an Al Wilson Custom Special evokes a ho-hum effort in a Tennessee team, we have problems.
Most conflicted. Me, on the idea of promoting the DVD commemorating the 1998 National Championship Season. On one hand, it brings Tee Martin and Al Wilson back to campus, and those pre-game Volunteer Legend sessions, along with the Jumbotron highlights of that fantastic season, are nice. On the other hand, as poorly as the first three games of the season have been, a constant reminder of The Way Things Were is not helping matters. Ohhhhh, now I see. A disastrous season is all part of Mike Hamilton's diabolical plan to sell more DVDs.
Worst sequel, special teams. As if two consecutive years of damage and a 55-yard kickoff isn't sufficient notice, Tennessee decided to punt to Brandon James. James fielded the ball at the 23. Two Vols immediately dove at him, and both missed wide left. Two other Vols converged on him at the 28, forming a perfect, tight triangle. Those two crumpled into a pile as James escaped unscathed to his left. Yet another Vol dove at James at the 29 and got juked so badly that he tripped the guy trailing James. Easy ridin' for James to the 40 where another Vol actually got off his block. He dove but couldn't get to James, who was by this time angling right, toward the middle of the field. James then outran a trailer and the punter, who got spun around while trying to get off the block and either tripped or was blocked in the back. Didn't we do this last year?
Best understatement. Fulmer, regarding the aforementioned Slapstick Punt Coverage: Not a good punt. Not good coverage. Okay, then.
Best second effort. Tight end Luke Stocker, who rebounded from a positively horrid game against UAB to haul down three catches for 25 yards, a couple of them right at the goal line. On one, Stocker shed two defenders behind the first down marker and plowed over another for the first. On the other, Stocker shed (I know I just used that term, but . . . he's a snake!) the guy covering him, drug another guy five yards toward the end zone, and then carried two other guys into the end zone. He crossed over into the end zone, but his knee was down. Please note that your knee would have been down after the first guy. Overall, a great rebound game for Stocker considering what happened to him last week. And no, Vol fans, this is not a reason to boo our players.
Worst reaction to the Red Zone Allergen. Three way tie. (1) Montario Hardesty's fumble (hardly his fault, as he was turned around to catch a screen pass and got hammered by a defender as he turned up field) in Tennessee's red zone, leading to three points for Florida; (2) QB Jonathan Crompton knocking the ball into the fullback's butt as he was trying to hand off to Arian Foster, fumbling the ball away at Florida's one-yard line and squandering an opportunity for seven points on an otherwise fantastic 14-play, 72-yard drive; (3) Crompton's interception at the same exact spot on Tennessee's next drive, squandering another opportunity for seven points on an otherwise terrific 11-play, 60-yard drive. Bonus points for the CBS video recap of all of Foster's game-destroying fumbles immediately before the botched handoff. Didn't we do this last year?
Worst double vision. Two Vol special teams players perfectly mirrored each other's efforts by blocking their guys in the back on Florida's first punt of the second half. It was men's Olympic synchronized diving without the speedos and televised group showers.
Best helmet trick. Eric Berry, for three excellent tackles in the second half. On the first, Berry blasted out of the secondary into Tim Tebow's legs as he was rolling out. I think Berry took maybe a grand total of one stride. Berry had a similar tackle shortly thereafter where he seemed to just magically appear at the right place at the right time. I do not believe that any traditional means of travel was utilized. Shortly after that, Berry blew up Percy Harvin. He was not there. And then he was.
Most humorous display of toughness. Jonathan Crompton, who popped right back up after getting absolutely head-smacked at the end of a scramble for a first down. Wait, strike the and substituted because the guy he was jawing at wasn't the guy who hit him.
Offensive player of the game. Gerald Jones, who rushed for 19 yards and caught five passes for another 40 yards. If only they would have let him throw it.
Defensive player of the game. Eric Berry, who had eight tackles, a sack, a tackle for a loss, and a time machine.
Creepiest commercial. What's up with those guys in suits blowing bubbles into some nekkid guy's bathtub water? Eeeww.
Most disturbing sight. Hordes of orange evacuating the disaster area midway through the third quarter. Sigh.

I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've ever won a match without scoring more than one point in any end. I guess it's like winning a football game without scoring a touchdown.
As previously documented, during a typical club match, the rocks start off slow, and then progressively speed up. The reason for this is because the rocks don't get onto the ice until a few minutes before we begin play, so the rocks don't have a chance to reach ice temperature before play starts. And the warmer the rock, the harder you have to throw it. As also previously documented, I'm more comfortable with faster rocks, which may contribute to these slow starts.
Am I a "second-half curler"? Actually, since I've been recording all of these box scores, let's find out! I added up the numbers from my last 15 games to get these end-by-end statistics:
1st end: Score 6-19; Ends won 5-10
2nd end: Score 5-16; Ends won 5-10
3rd end: Score 16-10; Ends won 10-5
4th end: Score 22-12; Ends won 9-6
5th end: Score 24-4; Ends won 12-3
6th end: Score 17-12; Ends won 7-8
7th end: Score 9-12; Ends won 7-8
8th end: Score 13-11; Ends won 8-4 *
(* - 3 of 15 games did not have an 8th end)
Based on those numbers, I wouldn't say I'm a second-half curler; more like a middle-game curler. The first two ends are brutal, but then we start to figure it out. By the 5th end, we're rolling. Then by the 7th end, things tend to even out. Disclaimer: most of those 15 games were with the same team, so those numbers probably have as much to do (if not more so) to do with my teammates as they do with me. But we'll see how it goes this season, because Amber and I are on a completely different team this time around.
Finally, I'm not sure if I'll be able to do the shot diagrams this season as I've been doing up to this point. As the vice, I have to concentrate on every shot, and can't observe quite as much and try to memorize situations and bounces as they happen. Maybe I should just bring a camera.
