Oh how I love the pigskin. The end of the year brings a celebration of the gridiron, that I enjoy immensely, and I can't get enough.

Over the weekend....I didn't watch a MINUTE of the baseball playoffs.

So to give you an idea of the mania....I'll give you an inside look to my weekend. I got off work at 6pm, and immediately drove from Kennewick to Spokane. I met my father at the currently under expansion Quest Casino. We had a spectacular lunch, gambled a bit. My dad left at 11pm.....I left at 4am! (Leaving up as well!)

I got up the next morning at 9am....less that 5 hours sleep, but there's football to watch. Also, I have a competition with a friend, 10 games a week, against the spread. 2 off those games were on TV. (Iowa/Michigan St. and Oklahoma/Baylor) During these games, I had breakfast with my father, and worked on the daily crossword.

The 12:30 games kickoff....and there's about five games to keep track of, with Alabama/Kentucky on the TV. During that game, we visit my Grandfather at his rest home....and lucky me, he has the game on. We have a nice visit....and head back home.

I have a Birthday Party to get to, so I shower while listening to the radio, to my beloved WA Huskies get smoked by Arizona. I continue to listen during my 30 minute drive to North Spokane. I have over an hour to kill, so I belly up to the bar at the Swinging Doors Tavern. I get a coffee, and nurse it with multiple refills, as the over 20 big screens keep me up to date on all the night games. OSU/Wisconsin, NC/Conn, USC/Oregon, UW/Arizona....among others. My picks for the day are going down in flames for the first half of all these games......

......but once I get to my friends house, 3 of the 4 turn around. I finish these games at my friends house...(One with my cell phone, since there's no local coverage of the OSU game) We then watch the WSU game....until a poker game breaks out. We proceed to play until 4am.

So I awake at 8:40, so I can meet other friends at a restaurant with the NFL Sunday ticket, completely across town. I get there at 9:30, and one of my best friends and his wife greet me there. My father comes a bit later and we settle in for good food and football. Or so I thought, until the magic time of 10am on a Sunday morning. NONE of the TVs were on a LIVE game!!!! It gets to 10:05, and no change. I feel like a smoker having a nicotine fit.......Theres NFL going on, and I can't see it! THE HORROR.

Slowly, the TV's emit the magic of an NFL Sunday, and things get better. I bid adieu to my friends, and watch the end of the 10am games at home. As soon as the SD/Mia game ends, I say goodbye to my father, and head back for Kennewick. Luckily, the AZ/Buffalo game is on the radio. Between that, and my cell phone, I'm kept up to date on the games. At ritzville, I lost the AZ/Buf game, and got the NE/SF game for the rest of my drive.

I get home a little after the Sunday night game starts...and I was able to watch most of that as well.

So, that's a slice of what goes on with a football junkie, on any given weekend. I'm single at the moment, and that type of weekend won't occur....or for long in that changes, so I'll enjoy it for all its worth while I can.

Long live football.....long live the King.

This is a great site for Unlimited free movies, games, and music..for free.
How can this be free, you ask. According to the site owners, everything, absolutely every
file you download, there is absolutely no charge, but.. Of course, theres a but.
There is a one time fee, and according to the website, the fee is to provide technical support
and to assure that programming, and functionality of the software, along with user help
guides and additional assistance is provided. This sounds great, for the fact that most
services like this provide little support, and survive primarily off of ad revanue. The
sites Frequently asked questions section, provides greater insight on their service as
follows:
Im new to downloading music. Will this be difficult?
Weve made the process as easy we can. Well guide you through the short process, to help you get started as fast as you want. If you find that the guide isnt completely clear, you can just send us an email with your question, and our support staff will show you the next step.
What music can I find?
The network has almost everything you could want - over six million files! If its interested someone, somewhere, chances are, its on the network.
I thought the software was free. Why am I being asked to pay?
The software is completely free of charge. What you pay goes towards supporting our technical team and paying for the creation of more user guides. If youre unsatisfied, you can always cancel your membership and keep the software.

If you cant find your files, you should try again in an hour or two. Users are connecting and disconnecting constantly, and its likely that a user with what you want will connect sooner or later. Just keep trying!
When I download, its often slow.
The speed of your downloads will vary depending on your connection and that of your source. The limit is often one or the other.
When I open the software, it does not want to connect to the server.
This is due to firewall software on your computer blocking the network traffic. The program cannot connect if your firewall is blocking access.
If you have Windows XP, disable the XP firewall in the systems settings in the control panel. To do so, simply follow these directions:
1. Click on the START button (lower left corner of Desktop). Go: Start, Settings, Control Panel.

1. Know that it will not be easy.
2. Spend way too much time trying to get it done by yourself before yelling at your Fi to help.
3. Ignore the task for a week.
4. Dedicate an evening to it, knowing full well, it will only take a few minutes, how hard could it be!
5. Have fi bring home a bottle of champagne (as a surprise) and drain it of its contents while moving people around.
6. Stand over your dining room table filled with escort cards, moving folks around for 2-3 hours.
7. Awe at your brilliance when you make connections (ie JOE is a doctor and my cousin Susan IS A DOCTOR too, so clearly they must sit together! Duncan is a navy pilot, Matt was in the Navy - table 7, done!)
8. Act surprised when at 11:00pm after 4.5 hours that it took THAT long and bask in your glory of getting all 112 people at 14 tables.

Call in honor to Football

Fellow Redskins fans, I’m very confused. I have no idea what our team will do this season.

Granted, it’s all preseason games, but the team looked great in the first one against the Indianapolis Colts. But they made common mistakes of a bottom-place team in the last two games. Plus, they were physically dominated in both of those games against Carolina and Jacksonville.

That aspect of their defeats has me very worried.

Call me one of the “Children of the Zorn” or “Me So Zorny” because I love our new coach. I like his approach with the players and the media. He is certainly old-school, not worried about calling a player out for lack of effort. But he also is quick to praise those who have played with intensity.

I don’t know how he’ll call a game yet since I suspect he’s been running a fairly vanilla offense in the preseason. I also don’t know about how he’ll adjust to situations, an aspect that separates good coaches from mediocre ones.

I do believe Zorn has physical talent to work with, though sometimes I question the desire and intelligence of some of the players.

Take quarterback Jason Campbell, for example. I understand he’s played in a different offense for the past six or seven years. But he has not made much progress in reading the defense and sensing pressure quicker. He seems to care less about the rush and the consequences of being hit. It’s like he’s locked into his target and nothing is going to deter him from that mission.

The good quarterbacks are able to defer to other options and instinctively avoid pressure. I have yet to see that from Campbell in the almost two years he’s been the starter. I believe it is a skill that can be learned. Maybe I shouldn’t be so worried yet. However, the Redskins open the season with three NFC road games and play New Orleans and Arizona. Washington can be 0-5 before Campbell figures it out.

Instead of trying to predict how the team will fare this season, I will try to figure out the 53 players who will be on the roster after cuts are made by the 4 p.m. Saturday deadline. Honestly, I really don’t want to think about wins and losses because I sense this could be a long season.
Roster (starters listed first, then backups in order)

QUARTERBACK (3): Campbell, Todd Collins, Colt Brennan.
Some have called for the rookie Brennan to start. That’s ridiculous. But I will tell you, there’s a chance he could compete for the role next year. That’s if Campbell continues to be clueless about things like a pass rush and Brennan maintains his level of enthusiasm and desire to improve.

RUNNING BACK (3): Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Marcus Mason.
I believe Rock Cartwright gets cut after a long run in Washington. It’s time this team keeps its talent and develops it rather than giving it away to other teams. Mason can play running back. He still needs to learn how to make an impact on special teams. He gets his chance this season.

FULLBACK (1): Mike Sellers.

TIGHT END (3): Chris Cooley, Fred Davis, Todd Yoder.
I love Cooley and Davis. I think both will line up together many times this season. Cooley is an all-pro, and the rookie Davis is a better blocker than expected.

WIDE RECEIVER (6): Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El, James Thrash, Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly, Billy McMullen.
The Richmond native, McMullen, makes the team as the sixth receiver. However, he’ll actually see the field more than Malcolm Kelly who can’t shake his chronically bad knees. Kelly is a major disappointment. The second-round draft choice might end up on injured reserve and loss for the season. The other second rounder, Thomas, looks like he hasn’t adjusted to the speed of the game. He can talent, though raw. However, I can see him contributing come November and December.

OFFENSIVE LINE (9): Chris Samuels, Pete Kendall, Casey Rabach, Randy Thomas, Stephon Heyer, Jon Jansen, Jason Fabini, Chad Rinehart, Andrew Crummey.
Heyer will take over for Jansen who is aging quickly before our eyes. Don’t be surprised to see Rinehart take over at guard or Crummey at center. The offensive line will look completely different next year.

DEFENSIVE LINE (9): Andre Carter, Anthony Montgomery, Cornelius Griffin, Jason Taylor, Kedric Golston, Lorenzo Alexander, Erasmus James, Rob Jackson and Chris Wilson.
Actually, Demetric Evans will probably make the team, though I hope not. He has not done anything and not developed at all. I like the rookie Jackson, who is a bigger defensive end. Golston loses his starting position because he is not a gap run stopper. Hopefully Taylor is back at full strength and he and Carter post double digit sacks.

LINEBACKERS (6): Rocky McIntosh, London Fletcher, Marcus Washington, H.B. Blades, Khary Campbell, Alfred Fincher.
The starting linebackers are old and injury-prone. Hopefully Fincher pans out because he’s been one of the few to show intensity every game in the preseason.

SECONDARY (10): Shawn Springs, Fred Smoot, Kareem Moore, LaRon Landry, Carlos Rogers, Reed Doughty, Leigh Torrence, Chris Horton, Justin Hamilton, Matteral Richardson.
With Landry, this defense is a force. Moore looks like a player who can deliver blows over the middle. Pray that Springs, Smoot and Rogers stay healthy.

SPECIAL TEAMS (3): Durant Brooks, Shaun Suisham, Ethan Albright.
Brooks better win the job. He’s a multiple pro bowl punter.

OUT AT HOME: When does Lost come back on?

VIDEO OF THE WEEK: This guy Fabrice Santoro was upset that Andy Roddick served it too fast into his body. The Frenchman claimed Roddick was headhunting or something to that effect. Are you kidding me? This is the U.S. Open. I’ve never heard of such a complaint. So what does Fabrice do on the next point? Match point? He stops playing. Way to compete Fabrice.

It's Triangle Curling Club Fall League time! Hooray! And due to a massive influx of new curlers, we have 10 full four-person teams in the league, and Amber and I have been upgraded from second/lead to vice/second, respectively. After winning the league championship last spring, I guess we deserved a promotion? I'm the least-experienced vice in the league by far, so my confidence isn't exactly high for this season. But I'm only 1/4 of the team, and we got off to a good start:

End............ 12345678 |TTL

Our team....... 00111111 | 06
Their team..... 31000000 | 04

I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've ever won a match without scoring more than one point in any end. I guess it's like winning a football game without scoring a touchdown.

As previously documented, during a typical club match, the rocks start off slow, and then progressively speed up. The reason for this is because the rocks don't get onto the ice until a few minutes before we begin play, so the rocks don't have a chance to reach ice temperature before play starts. And the warmer the rock, the harder you have to throw it. As also previously documented, I'm more comfortable with faster rocks, which may contribute to these slow starts.

Am I a "second-half curler"? Actually, since I've been recording all of these box scores, let's find out! I added up the numbers from my last 15 games to get these end-by-end statistics:

1st end: Score 6-19; Ends won 5-10
2nd end: Score 5-16; Ends won 5-10
3rd end: Score 16-10; Ends won 10-5
4th end: Score 22-12; Ends won 9-6
5th end: Score 24-4; Ends won 12-3
6th end: Score 17-12; Ends won 7-8
7th end: Score 9-12; Ends won 7-8
8th end: Score 13-11; Ends won 8-4 *
(* - 3 of 15 games did not have an 8th end)

Based on those numbers, I wouldn't say I'm a second-half curler; more like a middle-game curler. The first two ends are brutal, but then we start to figure it out. By the 5th end, we're rolling. Then by the 7th end, things tend to even out. Disclaimer: most of those 15 games were with the same team, so those numbers probably have as much to do (if not more so) to do with my teammates as they do with me. But we'll see how it goes this season, because Amber and I are on a completely different team this time around.

Finally, I'm not sure if I'll be able to do the shot diagrams this season as I've been doing up to this point. As the vice, I have to concentrate on every shot, and can't observe quite as much and try to memorize situations and bounces as they happen. Maybe I should just bring a camera.

What... a... game.
Oh, you didn't think that the Sports Night crew was just going to have a normal Super Bowl party, did you?
The LBPOST.com and Sports Night co-hosted a Super Sunday party at Smooth's Bar and Grille down on Pine and recorded a live, hour-long special Super Bowl edition available here! The place was packed and jumping with Giants fans (or Patriots haters).
It was truly a family affair, with Mike's (prophetic) mom, J.J.'s dad and Ryan's dad all in attendance and joining us on the podcast. We also stepped aside for a ladies' segment hosted by Mike's wife Shar, J.J.'s girlfriend Tracy and Ryan's girlfriend Nikol, who offered some suggestions on how we should fill our Sundays now that the NFL season is over.
Plenty of predictions, updates and game reactions, plus some very special interviews with former Dirtbag and current Devil Ray third baseman Evan Longoria, Smooth's owner John Morris on local sports legends and his thoughts on the NFL in Long Beach, and a quick word and announcement from LBPOST.com creator and publisher Robert Garcia.
In Mike's words, "We hope your Super Bowl was half as fun as ours... but it wasn't."
Peace.

Well, it's official. Comcast has announced its intentions to update all its user agreements on Oct. 1 to insert a 250GB monthly bandwidth cap. Some details are still sketchy, like the consequences of surpassing that cap (one idea floated is charging $15 for each additional 10GB of overage), but what was once a rumor is now an inevitability: the Internet's getting capped.
Now, there are many who are decrying this move as yet another example of a greedy billion-dollar corporation finding new ways to screw their customers, and that the only proper response to these plans is righteous indignation, but let's try to consider the big picture, both the positive and negative.

Positive - 250GB is a pretty big cap. Most of the other cablecos experimenting with bandwidth caps don't even set theirs above 100GB with some as low as 5GB, whereas Comcast has set a higher bar. For all but the heaviest of users 250GB will be way more than enough to avoid overages. 250GB means roughly 125 DVD-quality movies, and for video of lower quality like YouTube or a videocall, 250GB translates into even more hours.
Negative - A cap is still a cap in an era of growing demand for bandwidth. No matter how high it is, there will still be some and increasingly more users hitting it. While there's talk of how 250GB equals 125 standard-def movies, it actually only equates to 10-20 HD movies. And once you're over the cap, each additional HD movie will cost $10, $20, $30 more to deliver, not counting what you're paying for the content. Additionally, with the growth of always-on applications like P2P, video utilities that constantly pull in new video, higher def consumer camcorders, security cameras, and beyond that means that over time our bandwidth demands will only continue to grow. So even if the cap isn't hitting many users today, it could be impacting a lot of users tomorrow.

Positive - At least they're now being upfront and honest. That's been the biggest thing missing from the broadband marketplace: transparency in the parameters of the services providers are delivering. Whether you like caps or not, everyone agrees that the customer needs to know what he or she is buying. One question yet to be resolved, though, is how Comcast will help its users track their usage and notify them when they're nearing or exceeding their cap. Without a robust solution to this problem, there's no way a cap can work.

Negative - They're not done with caps alone. There's also been talks by Comcast of limiting the throughput of their heaviest users during the busiest of times. There likely will be future instances where to preserve the stability of their network they're going to have to implement less-than-user-friendly solutions like these. And if the public starts to cry out against these limitations, it may tempt Comcast to go back to its secretive practices. In other words, I don't think bandwidth caps are the final solution to their problems, so there's likely more ugliness ahead.

Positive - We now have a perfect opportunity to see if competition works. Americans love to get the most bang for their buck. We're the land of buffets and all-you-can-consume deals. So therefore, in general we should be predisposed against having limits imposed on our consumption. In turn, if the market for broadband is truly competitive and there are viable alternatives to cable Internet, then consumers should start turning away from cable service in droves due to these caps.

Negative - Competition almost certainly doesn't work. Whether we're talking about areas where cable's the sole provider, where the incumbent DSL provider's also pursuing bandwidth caps, or where the cost of cable TV skyrockets if you don't bundle it with TV, there will be many instances where consumers will now be stuck with these caps without anywhere else to turn. It's inevitable and unavoidable. For users who don't exceed the cap it won't be any big deal, but what about the heaviest users. Where are they supposed to turn? I'm even thinking about myself here as I don't want to be relegated to DSL because it's not fast enough. I love my speed and am willing to pay for it. But if I start hitting these caps, I've got nowhere to go other than much slower DSL service, and I'm sitting in the heart of our nation's capitol right now, not Podunk, North Dakota. Making matters worse, even if you did have a viable alternative, you've now only got a month to first learn there's a change coming, understand what it means, and then get switched over to a new provider, which is an extremely short timeframe especially given the fact that no one necessarily knows if they're using more than their fair share today.
So in the end, is Comcast's decision good or bad, helpful or hurtful, a step forward or a step back?
While I want to acknowledge the challenges they face managing their limited, shared, copper networks and while I can't deny their rights to manage that traffic and set the terms of their contracts as they see fit, I just can't bring myself to see this as a positive development for the future of the Internet or our country.
Unfortunately, I also don't see a whole lot of alternatives. If the marketplace doesn't work to correct this by consumers demanding something different, then what are our options? And on the flip side, what are the cablecos supposed to do when their networks are already sagging under the weight of ever-increasing demand for bandwidth?
We can't just lament these caps as yet another example of corporate greed while ignoring the fact that these networks are struggling to keep up with demand and provide a positive user experience.
So for now I think we're stuck. All we can do is make sure network operators are transparent in their policies and that the public is educated about what these policies translate to in terms of the user experience. And after that we just have to sit back and see how the market responds.
Otherwise our only other solution is to start moving more aggressively towards finding the answer to how we can wire our country with fiber thereby ridding ourselves of the limitations of copper networks. But of course as you all know, this is the option that gets my vote.

Bowls is a sport that is played and followed by millions throughout the world. It is a game of skill and precision rather than physical fitness and has therefore often been associated as a game for the older generation. However, many of the upcoming champions are becoming increasingly younger and the sport has spent recent years making its competitions quicker and more colourful to encourage followers.

Bowls can be played indoors or outdoors, and the rules are the same for both. Put simply, the aim of the game is to get your bowls as close as possible to a small white ball called the 'jack'.

In the singles competition, one of the two opponents flips a coin and begins a segment of the competition by placing the mat and rolling the jack to the other end of the green to serve as a target. Once it has come to rest, the jack is aligned to the canter of the rink and the players take turns to roll their bowls from the mat towards the jack.

When all the bowls have been played, a competitor or team gets one point for each of their bowls that is closer to the jack than the opponent's closest bowl.

After all the bowls have been played, the direction is reversed which signals the end of an end.

In group games, the team captain always plays last and has a key role in directing the team's shots and tactics.

Although it sounds easy, the fact that the bowls are not completely round and do not therefore travel in a straight line, means there is a great level of skill and tactics involved to win a match.

The game of Bowls has a distinctive history, dating all the way back to the Egyptians. Based on artefacts found in tombs dating circa 5,000 B.C, it appears that the Egyptians used to enjoy playing a version of skittles using round stones.

Different versions of this form of game then spread throughout the world and can be seen in the many types of bowls games played today. In Italy the game Bocce developed, which is a precision sport closely related to bowls with a common ancestry from ancient games played in the Roman Empire. In France the famous game of Boules arose from Bowls. This is a game that is played using metal balls, often on unusual and challenging terrain such as sand. The aim of the game is to get your large, heavy balls as close as possible to the small, white 'jack'.

The traditional game of bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, has particularly developed popularity throughout England, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and more recently, Denmark. The oldest recorded bowls green is in Southampton, England, which dates back to 1299.

There are also many famous bowling fans throughout English history. Perhaps one of the most infamous in bowls folklore is Sir Francis Drake who, according to legend, insisted on completing his game of bowls in Plymouth before setting sail to confront the Spanish Armada in 1588.

King Henry VIII and King James I were also said to be keen lawn bowlers and even introduced bowling legislation for their subjects!

In 1903, the English Bowling Association was officially founded and began to organise and direct clubs and competitions. Previously competitions had always taken place but for the first time an extensive league and organised contests sprang up.

Indoor variations of the bowls game also appeared, largely due to the problem of the English winter stopping outdoor play. Indoor Bowls is simply the indoor version of Lawn Bowls, which is played on strips of artificial green a similar length to Lawn Bowls rinks.

All versions of the sport have now grown enormously and there is a wealth of leagues, clubs, amateur and professional bowling leagues and competitions throughout the world.

World Bowls grew out of the Commonwealth Games when it was first held 70 years ago (then known as the Empire Games). It was originally intended that only athletics would form part of the games but bowlers successfully convinced the organisers to have bowling included and it has been played at the games ever since. Top stars from both indoor and outdoor formats now come together to play lawn bowls at the Commonwealth Games.

One of the largest bowling event organisers today, is the World Bowls Tour (WBT) - a limited company formed in September 1996 by the Professional Bowls Association, and the two major governing bodies for world flat green bowls, World Bowls Ltd and the World Indoor Bowls Council (WIBC).

The primary object of WBT is to set up a series of premier bowls events at which the top players in the world can play.

One of the most exciting competitions in the UK World Bowls Tour calendar is the World Indoor Bowls Championships that take place at Potters Leisure Resort in Hopton, Norfolk. The event has been hosted at Potters for the last eight years (since 1999) and 2007 will see the event take place there once again for the ninth year running.

As on other previous years, 2007 will see professional players come together from throughout the world, to take part in televised matches including singles, pairs and mixed pairs.

The World Indoor Bowls championships take place at Potters Leisure Resort (more details can be found at pottersholidays.

Just imagine how this planning session between Bush, Rummy and Cheney must have gone:

BUSH: So, what's the plan again?

CHENEY: Well, we need to invade Iraq and Afghanistan. So what we've decided to do is crash a whole bunch of remote-controlled planes into Wall Street and the Pentagon, say they're real hijacked commercial planes, and blame it on Bin Laden; then we'll just blow up the buildings ourselves to make sure they actually fall down.

RUMSFELD: Right! And we'll make sure that some of the hijackers are agents of Saddam Hussein! That way we'll have no problem getting the public to buy the invasion.

CHENEY: No, Don, we won't.

RUMSFELD: We won't?

CHENEY: No, that's too obvious. We'll make the hijackers al-Qaeda and then just imply a connection to Iraq.

RUMSFELD: But if we're just making up the whole thing, why not just put Saddam's fingerprints on the attack?

CHENEY: (sighing) It just has to be this way, Don. Ups the ante, as it were. This way, we're not insulated if things go wrong in Iraq. Gives us incentive to get the invasion right the first time around.

BUSH: I'm a total idiot who can barely read, so I'll buy that. But I've got a question. Why do we need to crash planes into the Towers at all? Since everyone knows terrorists already tried to blow up that building complex from the ground up once, why don't we just blow it up like we plan to anyway, and blame the bombs on the terrorists?

RUMSFELD: Mr. President, you don't understand. It's much better to sneak into the buildings ourselves in the days before the attacks, plant the bombs, and then make it look like it was exploding planes that brought the buildings down. That way, we involve more people in the plot, stand a much greater chance of being exposed, and needlessly complicate everything!

CHENEY: Of course, just toppling the Twin Towers will never be enough. No one would give us the war mandate we need if we just blow up the Towers. Clearly, we also need to shoot a missile at a small corner of the Pentagon to create a mightily under-publicized additional symbol of international terrorism -- and then, obviously, we need to fake a plane crash in the middle of fucking nowhere somewhere in rural Pennsylvania.

RUMSFELD: Yeah, it goes without saying that the level of public outrage will not be sufficient without that crash in the middle of fucking nowhere.

CHENEY: And the Pentagon crash -- we'll have to do it in broad daylight and say it was a plane, even though it'll really be a cruise missile.

BUSH: Wait, why do we have to use a missile?

CHENEY: Because it's much easier to shoot a missile and say it was a plane. It's not easy to steer a real passenger plane into the Pentagon. Planes are hard to come by.

BUSH: But aren't we using two planes for the Twin Towers?

CHENEY: Mr. President, you're missing the point. With the Pentagon, we use a missile, and say it was a plane.

BUSH: Right, but I'm saying, why don't we just use a plane and say it was a plane? We'll be doing that with the Twin Towers, right?

CHENEY: Right, but in this case, we use a missile. (Throws hands up in frustration) Don, can you help me out here?

RUMSFELD: Mr. President, in Washington, we use a missile because it's sneakier that way. Using an actual plane would be too obvious, even though we'll be doing just that in New York...The other good thing about saying that it was a passenger jet is that that way, we have to invent a few hundred fictional victims and account for a nonexistent missing crew and plane. It's always better when you leave more cover story to invent, more legwork to do, and more possible holes to investigate. Doubt, legwork, and possible exposure -- you can't pull off any good conspiracy without them.

BUSH: You guys are brilliant! Because if there's one thing about Americans -- they won't let a president go to war without a damn good reason. How could we ever get the media, the corporate world, and our military to endorse an invasion of a secular Iraqi state unless we faked an attack against New York at the hands of a bunch of Saudi religious radicals? Why, they'd never buy it.

RUMSFELD: Well, I'm sold on the idea. Let's call the Joint Chiefs, the FAA, the New York and Washington DC fire departments, Rudy Giuliani, all three networks, the families of a thousand fictional airline victims, MI-5, the FBI, FEMA, the NYPD, Larry Eagleburger, Osama bin Laden, Noam Chomsky and the fifty thousand other people we'll need to pull this off. There isn't a moment to lose.

In Mike's words, "We hope your Super Bowl was half as fun as ours... but it wasn't."

head into the anniversary of 9/11, I’d like to recommend to your viewers that they check out the 2008 documentary “Man on Wire” about Philippe Petit’s 1974 high-wire walk atop the World Trade Center. The film has already won a number of awards and is an engaging retelling of not only the act (which gave me the willies to watch) but the level of intensity and planning that went into pulling off the feat.
Interesting sidenote - Alan Welner, a Hoboken resident, appears in the film and was one of the “co-conspirators” in the execution of the wire-walk. The film has great footage of the WTC – I’d highly recommend it to anyone who wants to remember it. It’s showing at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema – 124 E. Houston – and the Clearview at 1st and 62nd.

Latinos take more prominent role as WNC farm owners
Kayla Carrick published September 7, 2008

MARION Domingo Perez starts work on his fields in Henderson and McDowell counties by 7 a.m., just as the sun is rising, and he usually doesnt call it a day until sundown.

In just over a decade, his leased farmland has grown from 3 acres to 150 acres. He plants cucumbers, jalepeños and bell peppers, and hes gaining a reputation for producing some of the best heirloom tomatoes in the area.

Perezs business has boomed since he first started, but it isnt an eye for profit that keeps the Mexican-born farmer planting its whos working next to him.

Each day he works in his fields with his sons, Domingo Jr., Albaro and Baltazar, teaching them to make a living, working with their hands alongside their brothers.

Despite cultural barriers, more Latinos in the state are making the transition from farm worker to farm owner and operator. The trend is particularly prevalent in Western North Carolina, where farms are smaller and can be less expensive something especially important for Latinos, who can face obstacles getting startup capital.

I did it to teach my children, Perez said through a translator. This way nothing scares them. They dont use drugs. This way I get along with my family.
New neighbors

Perez made his first trip to the U.S. to look for work when he was 15 years old, and he continued to commute across the border to make money until he made a permanent move with his family 17 years ago.

The Perezes, who all have citizenship or legal residency status, eventually settled in Western North Carolina, joining a rapidly growing Latino population in the region that the U.S. census estimates at about 30,000 in 2000. Whereas the entire population of the region grew 17 percent during the prior decade, the Latino population rose by more than 400 percent.

Like Perez, the Latinos flocking to Western North Carolina are looking for jobs most often in agriculture or construction. While Latinos represent the largest source of farm labor in the region, many are moving toward ownership.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Census of Agriculture found that the number of Latino farmers in the U.S. increased from 20,956 to 61,094 from 1992 to 2002. The same study reported that Latino farm operators increased from 131 in 1992 to 739 in 2002 in North Carolina. Perezs family is one of 199 farms that were counted in 2002 in the Western North Carolina region. In 1997, only 48 farms were counted in the area.

Scott Marlow, who does research on Latino farming through the Rural Advancement Foundation International, said the USDA numbers are underestimated, making it hard to develop programs to aid Latino farm owners.

re really under the radar, said Marlow, the director of farm sustainability for RAFI. I can tell you precisely how many acres of cotton have been grown in North Carolina over the past 100 years and probably who grew them, so there is great programming for cotton.

The problem is we dont know how many Latino farmers sold what yesterday.
Generational change

Traditionally, a retiring farmer passes his land his lifeblood on to his children, and many farmers take pride in working the same soil as their great-grandparents.

Now, its becoming more common that a retiring farmers family wont want to go into the family business. And with no offspring to work the land, retiring farmers are turning to the bonds they have formed with their workers instead.

The result? Latinos are the new replacement farmer.

Perezs son Baltazar is a sort of outdoors businessman who is constantly answering calls from buyers on his cell phone while working in the fields. He says attitudes among American-born workers toward the kind of labor he does daily driving tractors and shoveling in the earth might explain why farms are being turned over to Latino migrant workers.

American people are starting to look for work more in an office that has air conditioning, Baltazar Perez said.

The average age of a farmer in the Carolinas is 59, and that number has been ticking up each year, according to Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, a group that promotes local agriculture.

Since farmland is often lost to development during the generational hand-off, organizations such as Marlows that work to preserve farmland are encouraging Latinos to take ownership, particularly in the mountains where land would quickly be snatched up by a developer otherwise.

Last year, Marlow hired interns to explore Latino farm ownership first-hand, by hitting the fields. The interns began by the coast, working their way inland, thinking theyd see the most Latino-owned farms in the East where migrant labor is more common.

But the interns found more Latino farm operators in the west, largely because the farms are less expansive (and expensive) than their eastern counterparts.

Eastern farms traditionally grow low-value commodity crops that require a large acreage, according to Jason Roehrig, program manager for the Tobacco Communities Reinvestment Project with RAFI. Western North Carolina farms tend to grow higher-value crops on fewer acres.

s extremely difficult and nearly impossible for a new farmer who didnt inherit the farm or inherit the money to purchase a farm to grow commodities, or the types of farms that exist in the eastern part of the state, Roehrig said. s much more likely for a new farmer to buy their way into producing higher-value crops.

Smaller farms also breed closer relationships between owners and workers, making the transfer of ownership more likely.
A separate community

Kathryn Beattie is a truck driver, hauling food for local farmers. To supplement her income, shell do a little buying and selling, she said.

Beattie met Perez, one of her clients, at the WNC Farmers Market, where he sets up a booth when his tomatoes are in season. Beattie and Perez, who speaks basic English, are able to do business despite the language barrier. Beattie will talk with one of Perezs sons two were born in the U.S. and all three speak English fluently if any language issues occur.

But many Latino farmers face problems marketing their produce and forming relationships with buyers who speak a different language.

Many Latino farm owners, including those as successful as Perez, are missing out on some help that is available to English-speaking farmers. Marlow said its hard to provide technical support to Latino farmers or teach them how to grow organically because of the specialized language required. Until recently there were no Spanish preparation materials for the pesticide license exam, despite the fact that the test was administered in Spanish.

How do you say cationic capacity in Spanish?, Marlow asked. s those sorts of things. Its hard when you try to talk about net return or cash flows in a language that isnt your own.

Kate Slattery, a farm outreach specialist with community-based collaborative Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, spends her days helping farmers in Western North Carolina.

She said some Latino farmers have taken advantage of ASAPs offerings including training in safe food handling procedures and a certification program for locally grown produce but difficulties remain.

I havent been able to help them because of that language barrier, Slattery said. I think its just a separate community in a lot of ways.

Farmers markets and groceries across the state report the same thing: Buyers havent had much interaction with Latino farmers, citing a cultural barrier.

Paul Griswold, the fresh foods merchandiser for Weaver Street Market in Carrboro, makes contacts with farmers through growers meetings he attends throughout the state. He buys from several farmers in Western North Carolina, but no Latinos.

s basically about who you know or who youre introduced to, Griswold said. I just dont know how to get in touch with Latino farmers.
Culture and capital

Andrew Branan, director of N.C. Farm Transition Network, an organization that helps farmers plan for the future, said the market for farm land is competitive, and that can work to the disadvantage of Latinos.

The logical choice (for a farmer looking to sell his land) is to go with an established grower this may not be someone in the immigrant population who is relatively new to the area, Branan said.

Marlow said that in his research, he found that many Latino farm owners complained of people assuming they were migrant workers when they attended farmers markets.

The struggle to obtain startup capital also holds many Latino workers back. Perez worked in construction before he started planting, and continued part-time after he acquired his first three acres of farmland.

The income helped the family get loans a task Marlow said can be more difficult for former migrant workers.

Loan officers either dont believe that they actually have the down payment, or that they got the down payment illegally, Marlow said. re even skeptical of their farming experience as a migrant laborer, even though many owned farms in their home countries. Its a series of biases that sometimes are subtle and sometimes aren

Marlow said Latino farmers could be putting more money into the economy if more services were available to them.

This is the American dream, Marlow said. The process is being made much harder for them than it needs to be.

Perez and his family are working to beat those odds. He began working on ranches in Mexico at age 9, describing the labor as excruciating.

We grew up in the earth. We worked in the fields, he said. We are committed to this.

Now that he can watch his children work a farm that is much more stable than the atmosphere in which he grew up, his vision is becoming a reality.

And thats why he continues to get up before sunrise, with his sons at his side.
