Soyou want to be a football journalist? You want press access to all the matches and press conferences, one-on-one interviews with the football stars, dining with the biggest names in the game?
Theres good news, and theres bad news.
The bad news is that your chances of making it as an averagely-successful journo working for a top-of-the-line newspaper are less than 1 in 10,000. And your chances of being a really, really, REALLY successful journalist and living the life (which usually involves writing a book, being called up by players for exclusive interviews and god knows what) are 1 in a 1,000,000. 1 in a million, and Im being generous.
The good news is that most people quit at the first hurdle - the challenge of getting in. The real battle for the top starts once youre in the business - as long as youre on the outside, youre nothing (or very little). And since most people quit before theyre in, your chances of success can be a lot higher (still very poor odds but better than 1 in a million, at least) as long as you can figure a path into the world of football journalism.
So how do you do it? I asked the same question to a few journalists - some successful, some getting there, but all of them with different backgrounds, experiences and tips to share. From our conversations, here is a collection of tips that you can follow to dramatically increase your chances of getting in - of becoming a football journalist.

In the midst of tallying the results from last week I realized that I'm now identical in picking the top games of the week and my best bets. If that doesn't tell you what a science oddsmaking is and what a crapshoot sports betting can be, nothing will.
But it was a good week nonetheless including a perfect 5-0 in picking the top games last week, a mark that surprised even me.
This week, the story is most conferences are starting to see close to a full slate of conference games. The opportunity here is for a bettor to identify teams that are overvalued because of their non-conference schedule.
A good example might be Ohio State giving only 18 points to Minnesota at home. Minnesota is 4-0, but the best team it played in the non-conference was probably Bowling Green. Meanwhile, Ohio State has struggled on offense, but I don't expect those struggles to continue against a grim Gophers defense. I expect the Buckeyes to handle Minnesota easily, probably by five touchdowns.
Top Games
Oklahoma (-18) vs. TCU -- The temptation is to take the Horned Frogs and the points, but I don't think OU's offense is going to be slowed down very much this week.
Georgia (-7) vs. Alabama -- I just don't think Alabama is ready to win a game this big on the road yet. I'd rather this number were a little lower, but I still think the Bulldogs are capable of covering it.
Illinois (+14) at Penn State -- Penn State's offense has been mighty impressive the first few weeks of the season, but against a fairly dreadful non-conference slate. This falls into my theory about teams being overvalued because of their non-conference schedule. I still think PSU wins, but only by a touchdown or so.
Virginia Tech (+7) at Nebraska -- I really hate betting on either of these teams, so when in doubt take the points. Nebraska seems overrated to me, but playing at home should be a big advantage for them.
Auburn (-6.5) vs. Tennessee -- As bad as Auburn's offense has been (though it did look better at times against LSU) I hate to give up a touchdown, but it seems like the wheels are ready to come off at Tennessee. I had thought the season opening loss to UCLA was just an anomaly, but it looks like the Volunteers might just be bad.
Best Bets
Ohio State (-18) vs. Minnesota -- Sometimes before I look up the lines I think about certain games and try to guess what the number will be. Usually, I can get it within a couple of points, so imagine my surprise to expect to see OSU giving 25 or 26 points and only giving 18. A lot has been made of their offensive struggles, but Minnesota was one of the worst defenses in FBS history last year and they haven't made enough strides to slow down anyone the Buckeyes might play at QB. (Plus, Beanie Wells is supposed to be back. That's good for at least one TD.)
Fresno State (-7) at UCLA -- This is free money. Fresno State is way better than Arizona, which hung a big number on the Bruins last week. The fact this game is in L.A. does nothing to convince me the Bruins are going to be able to keep it close.
Purdue (1.5) at Notre Dame -- No one seems to want to believe this, but Notre Dame is not a good team. They're lucky to be 2-1 and Purdue should be able to move the ball at will.
Mississippi (+23) at Florida -- Florida is a great team and they should beat Ole Miss rather easily, but this is too many points to give to a good football team. Don't be surprised to see a score like 27-13.
Louisville (-3.5) vs. Connecticut -- I don't really understand why so many people are high on UConn, though I give it credit for finding ways to win games. Louisville appears to have turned a corner after stumbling for most of last season and should be due for another big win on national TV.
Last Week
7-3 last week, 20-18-2 overall.

Its another edition of Sunday Night Football people and this week, we have a good ol fashioned face-off between offense and defense.
Week 4 of the 2008-09 NFL football season continues at Soldier Field when the high-flying Philadelphia Eagles visit the Chicago Bears on Sunday night. The Eagles, with a healthy Donovan McNabb, are powered this year with one of the high-scoring offensive schemes in the league while the Bears, with all their problems at the QB position, dont have much of a choice but to try win games on defense.
However, as good as Phillys offense has become this season, taking on the Bears on Sunday Night Football without their solid running game may just be a big problem.

The UK is the first powerful country in the world to pass laws allowing for the regulation of online gaming. By this September, gambling on the internet will be completely legal in the United Kingdom. Their intention is to invite offshore casinos, which are currently based on third-world islands, to come do business on their free land. Once the transition occurs, the UK will be in position to regulate and tax the 10 billion pound-a-year industry. Over the past year, the UK parliament has actively pursued laws to enable legalized and regulated online gambling within their territory. Taxation plans are currently being negotiated.
Other countries like Italy, who first banned all forms of web based wagering, are now moving to complete legalization through proper regulation. Spain and South Africa are following suit, helping to bring Internet gambling acceptance to the global marketplace. There are some countries, like Germany and France, who are leaning towards prohibition, but their purpose is to protect land-based casino gambling operations. However, protectionism goes against European Union standards and many challenges lay ahead for the liberal continent. At the opposite end of the debate, the United States has declared a prohibitive stance towards the industry citing moral issues as their argument, however they do allow brick and mortar casinos, lotteries, bingo halls, and horse racing tracks to operate legally on their land.
The Internet gambling industry changes on a month-by-month basis. Keeping up with all the current events and latest newsworthy happenings takes time and devotion. It is our duty and pleasure at Casino Gambling Web to perform this job on your behalf. We take great pride in delivering quality and relevant news pertaining to the industry so be sure to stay tuned.

In the last couple of weeks Ive done something very uncharacteristic of this blog. Ive focused my energy and my attention on one topic, football, ignoring everything else that is happening around us in the world. It isnt that I havent cared, but just that Ive been so thoroughly disgusted with the state of U.S. politics that I couldnt bring myself to actually put keys to screen. Today, mi amigos, the gloves are coming off. I have reached my breaking point with these people, and Im going to show you exactly why.
Also, I will not be pulling any punches on Sarah Palin because of her gender, her family or any other reason. When Hilary Clinton wanted the keys to the White House I made the exact same point woman or man, black or white, no one gets a free pass to the nuclear codes. If anyone feels that Im beating up on Palin or unfairly criticizing her because of her gender, Id ask you this: Would anything Im about to say have been if she was a male candidate? Are the attacks on Obama and Biden unfair? Of course not. If you believe that somehow any aspect of this woman (wait, I shouldnt say this woman as that clearly makes me sexist in the interest of fairness Ill call her this guy from now on, just like I would anyone else) this guy is off limits due to her gender then it is YOU who harbor sexist ideas, not me. I happen to believe that a woman is just as capable of defending herself in the political arena as a man. Just ask Margret Thatcher.
So, here we go with a laundry list of things that piss me off. No particular order, just eight different issues that are currently driving me mad, numbered for your convenience.

Australian football is coming to a close with Australian Rules (AFL) concluding this weekend and Australian rugby league (NRL) concluding the following weekend. They all offer some great online betting opportunities.
In the AFL, Geelong, last years premiers are red hot favourites to repeat the effort this year. Hawthorn have had a solid run into this weekends final and it is fitting that the two team that finished one-two in the regular season will meet in the grand final.
Ladbrokes have Geelong at 2/5 to win again, Hawthorn are at 7/4. The odds dont reflect how close these teams really are. The handicap betting favours Hawthorn with a +15.5 at 5/6. Geelong at -15.5 and 5/6 are not good value. I expect a Geelong win but the scores will be much closer, probably less than two goals. Geelong by 10.
In the NRL, its semi finals time with Melbourne Storm minus their captain and best player take on Cronulla Sharks who have been quietly working their way towards the grand final. In the other match, giant killers NZ Warriors take on Manly SeaEagles in what should be a great game.
Melbourne Storm are 4/7 with Ladbrokes whilst Cronulla are 11/8. I am tipping Cronulla to win this game. Melbourne have had a very unsettling week which culminated in the suspension of their captain for two weeks. He is one of their best play makers and they will miss him. Cronulla by 8 points.
The NZ Warriors - Manly match will be a great spectacle. The Warriors have worked hard to climb from 8th on the ladder to be in the semi-finals. Manly are a top side but seem to lack spark - they are just hard working laborers. Manly are 4/11 with the Warriors 2/1. At 2/1 the Warriors are great value and my tip for the weekend.
That makes my prediction for the grandfinal Cronulla against NZ Warriors. The two underdog teams. That will be well worth watching.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN - TRANMERE ROVERS
Going to stick with Town, who finally got off the mark in the league, with a come from behind win at Cheltenham last weekend. They seem certain to stick with the available striking trio of Jevons, Parker and Dickinson and their pace should trouble a defence that looks likely to be without two key players and with another, Ian Goodison, named POTY for the last two seasons, carrying an injury and surely feeling drained, after playing for Jamaica in Mexico and Honduras, over the last seven days. We have discussed Huddersfield many times already, especially in the pre season preview and they look a side finally starting to gel. Reports from training this week have been superb, with confidence levels sky high, they owe their fans a home win and it should come today.
6 points Huddersfield -1/2 ball 2.00 asian line..... there is a little 2.10 around .
SWINDON TOWN - LEEDS UNITED
Leeds are another side really eager to get going today. Aside from the suspended Lubo Michalik, they have a fully fit squad to choose from and competition for places is keen. They get a little more freedom away from Elland Road, where teams tend to try and "shut up shop", this is clear from the eight goals they have scored in three starts, creating an average of 16 attempts on goal in each. At Scunthorpe, they managed an incredibly high 25 attempts at the Scunny goal and the home side have given that formline a boost, by winning four in a row, scoring ten goals. Hosts have a few injury concerns and are yet to keep a clean sheet, it is hard to see that changing today, Leeds will, as always, have a huge travelling support cheering them on, they have sold their allocation of 3,000 tickets and many more are sure to have made other plans to attend.
6.5 points Leeds United -1/4 ball 1.96 asian line.

ROTHERHAM - ROCHDALE
My brother knows nothing about betting, but is a pretty good judge of football teams, having said that, he also supports Brentford ! He rated Rochdale as the best side to play at Griffin Park last season and boss Keith Hill has managed to keep most of his squad intact. They have not really hit form this season yet, it was always going to take a little time to get over the play-off final loss, but they remain a talented side and they will come good very soon, if not this week, then next. They suffered a terrible loss when Paul Conway their Sports Scientist, a very popular figure at the club, passed away last week, the players were not in any mood to against Wycombe and it showed. They have come to terms with things this week and want a good result today in his name, ahead of the funeral on Monday. Young Ipswich striker Jordan Rhodes has joined on loan and goes straight into the squad, sooner or later they are going to start converting the many chances they are creating (74 verses Rotherham's 50) and someone will be on the end of a thumping.
Hosts have been a little negative in their approach recently and have not scored in 363 minutes of football. Dale did the double last year, with an 8-3 goal difference, scoring four in each game, they might not be so prolific today, but are unlikely to go home empty handed.
6 points Rochdale +1/4 ball 1.95 asian line.
