If your idea of a superhero is someone with an invincible ego who can type e-mails while wearing boxing gloves, then the Wii™ Shop Channel has great news for you. The legendary Strong Bad (from the popular Homestar Runner Web series) makes his eagerly anticipated WiiWare™ debut this week. For even more laughs and clever gaming kicks, you’ll also find a satirical space-age shooter on the Virtual Console™, along with a classic billiards game for those who prefer to keep their feet planted firmly on the ground.
Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:
WiiWare
Strong Bad Episode 1: Homestar Ruiner (Telltale Games, 1 player, Rated T for Teen-Crude Humor, Mild Cartoon Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes, 1,000 Wii Points): Charming. Suave. Awesome. These are the words Strong Bad would use to describe himself. In a world gone mad, only one man can be trusted to save the day. A man with an attitude. A man called Strong Bad. As the star of the Homestar Runner Web cartoons, Strong Bad has been answering e-mails (in boxing gloves), pranking his friends, pummeling his enemies, and making people with questionable taste snort milk out of their noses for years now. And he’s branched out to star in Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People, a monthly five-episode series. In Episode 1: Homestar Ruiner, Strong Bad’s plans to beat the snot out of Homestar backfire, and he ends up with an unwanted houseguest cramping his style. Now he needs to get life back to normal by any means possible. But wait, there’s more: Teen Girl Squad comics, achievements, funny costumes and arcade games. You can even send pictures and messages to Wii Friends using Strong Bad’s computer. So how about it? Can you handle Strong Bad’s style?
Virtual Console
Break In (TurboGrafx16, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone-Tobacco Reference, 700 Wii Points): Gather up to four players for an authentic game of pool right in your own home. Choose from six billiards games including 9-Ball, Rotation and Carom (a game played without pockets). Use Simulation mode to calculate the perfect shot, or select Action mode and check out what went wrong with your missed shots. With all that to choose from, Break In gives players-from beginners to experts-all the elements necessary to enjoy a great game of pool. But it doesn’t stop there. Select Technique to practice your angles or even go for a trick shot. Get some help from the CPU and hone your skills. With Break In, you’ll be a pro in no time.
Star Parodier (TurboGrafx16 CD-ROM, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Cartoon Violence, 900 Wii Points): Star Parodier is the hilarious spoof of the classic Hudson shooter Star Soldier. In this parody, there are three playable ships for players to choose from: the ingratiating PAROCEASER, the hot-headed BOMBERMAN, and the ever-so-introverted PC-ENGINE. Players control one of these unique and original ships and set off to blast their way through eight stages on the planet PAROSON. The comical characters take the color and flavor of the Soldier series to the next level and are guaranteed to leave players mesmerized. In addition to the normal game mode, there are also the familiar two-minute and five-minute attack modes, making Star Parodier the complete package that is sure to have players coming back for more.

I don't get around to mentioning every match-up as it happens, so this entry is an attempt to catch up on some of them. After all, it is supposed to be a Diary, right?

1. Yesterday I shot a couple of sets with El Maestro Tony Sorto at Family Billiards in Oceanside. They just installed some new cloth and tightened up the pockets on a few tables. I was most interested in trying my draw stroke on new cloth to compare the results I've been getting on my table. In a word: Wow! Now I'm going to have to replace the cloth on my table. Another reason for doing this: I just played (again) the John Schmidt DVD showing his run of 245 balls in straight pool. He mentions new cloth as being a benefit for higher runs. That clinched it. In any case, back to yesterday's match-up: I won 7-2 playing the US Amateur format (9 ball and 8 ball), and as I was rubbing his nose in it, behaving like a poor winner (hey, I'm from Philly... that's what we do), he reminded me that he won the first set of 9-ball only, by the same score, 7-2. Amazingly, I didn't remember that so readily. Funny how the mind works, easily forgetting the negatives. I'm sure that's a good thing, a survival tactic.

2. On June 19, Malve showed up for the first time in about 6 months. It was late, after I had just put in a strong practice session of 3+ hours, so I was tired, but I didn't want to wus out, and used it as an opportunity to stretch my endurance. We played a short race to 5 in 9-ball. It seemed that neither of us were playing that great, but he got ahead 3-0 before I woke, got focused, and made it hill-hill, whereupon he totally lucked in a round-the-table wild ball which combo-ed in the 9 ball. "The balls roll funny for everybody, kiddo" (Fast Eddie Felson, The Color of Money).

3. On June 14, one of the legends of pool stopped by FastMikie's Fun House on his way to the US Open (golf) tournament at Torrey Pines, just a mile or two down the road. Jay Helfert is a well known pool tournament director and poker player and pool shooter, and a regular on the AZBilliards.com forum, where we met. He shows up here early in the morning, and I'm not really awake yet, and haven't had any breakfast, so I just watch him hit balls while we talk. He's banking like a madman, sinking them from everywhere, and he's got me thinking that I'm in for a major lesson in humility when we get around to playing after he returns from the golf tournament. I call in the reserves: El Maestro, figuring that after Jay puts me down that Tony will put him down. But it turned out better than I thought, and I won 7-4 in US Amateur format (8 and 9 ball games). Jay got off to a strong start 3-0, but I won the next 7 out of 8 games for the win. And I had a couple of really nice games of 8 ball at the finish, pure surgical performances. Loved it. So I didn't need Tony for backup, and we just played some Honduran rotation for a while, and then Jay gave me some lessons in One Pocket, which I never play. Jay showed me his photo and story in the great One Pocket book "Shots, Moves and Strategies, as taught by the game's greatest players" (see page 71).

4. I might be missing a match or two here, so if it's one I lost to you, please remind me. I have a tendency to forget the losses.

define a generation we cannot afford to keep doing what we've been doing. We owe our children a better future. We owe our country a better future. And for all those who dream of that future tonight, I say let us begin the work together. Let us unite in common effort to chart a new course for America.
In just a few short months, the Republican Party will arrive in St. Paul with a very different agenda. They will come here to nominate John McCain, a man who has served this country heroically. I honor that service, and I respect his many accomplishments, even if he chooses to deny mine. My differences with him are not personal; they are with the policies he has proposed in this campaign.
Because while John McCain can legitimately tout moments of independence from his party in the past, such independence has not been the hallmark of his presidential campaign.
It's not change when John McCain decided to stand with George Bush ninety-five percent of the time, as he did in the Senate last year.
It's not change when he offers four more years of Bush economic policies that have failed to create well-paying jobs, or insure our workers, or help Americans afford the skyrocketing cost of college policies that have lowered the real incomes of the average American family, widened the gap between Wall Street and Main Street, and left our children with a mountain of debt.
And it's not change when he promises to continue a policy in Iraq that asks everything of our brave men and women in uniform and nothing of Iraqi politicians a policy where all we look for are reasons to stay in Iraq, while we spend billions of dollars a month on a war that isn't making the American people any safer.
So I'll say this there are many words to describe John McCain's attempt to pass off his embrace of George Bush's policies as bipartisan and new. But change is not one of them.
Change is a foreign policy that doesn't begin and end with a war that should've never been authorized and never been waged. I won't stand here and pretend that there are many good options left in Iraq, but what's not an option is leaving our troops in that country for the next hundred years especially at a time when our military is overstretched, our nation is isolated, and nearly every other threat to America is being ignored.
We must be as careful getting out of Iraq as we were careless getting in - but start leaving we must. It's time for Iraqis to take responsibility for their future. It's time to rebuild our military and give our veterans the care they need and the benefits they deserve when they come home. It's time to refocus our efforts on al Qaeda's leadership and Afghanistan, and rally the world against the common threats of the 21st century terrorism and nuclear weapons; climate change and poverty; genocide and disease. That's what change is.
Change is realizing that meeting today's threats requires not just our firepower, but the power of our diplomacy tough, direct diplomacy where the President of the United States isn't afraid to let any petty dictator know where America stands and what we stand for. We must once again have the courage and conviction to lead the free world. That is the legacy of Roosevelt, and Truman, and Kennedy. That's what the American people want. That's what change is.
Change is building an economy that rewards not just wealth, but the work and workers who created it. It's understanding that the struggles facing working families can't be solved by spending billions of dollars on more tax breaks for big corporations and wealthy CEOs, but by giving a the middle-class a tax break, and investing in our crumbling infrastructure, and transforming how we use energy, and improving our schools, and renewing our commitment to science and innovation. It's understanding that fiscal responsibility and shared prosperity can go hand-in-hand, as they did when Bill Clinton was President.
John McCain has spent a lot of time talking about trips to Iraq in the last few weeks, but maybe if he spent some time taking trips to the cities and towns that have been hardest hit by this economy cities in Michigan, and Ohio, and right here in Minnesota he'd understand the kind of change that people are looking for.
Maybe if he went to Iowa and met the student who works the night shift after a full day of class and still can't pay the medical bills for a sister who's ill, he'd understand that she can't afford four more years of a health care plan that only takes care of the healthy and wealthy. She needs us to pass health care plan that guarantees insurance to every American who wants it and brings down premiums for every family who needs it. That's the change we need.
Maybe if he went to Pennsylvania and met the man who lost his job but can't even afford the gas to drive around and look for a new one, he'd understand that we can't afford four more years of our addiction to oil from dictators. That man needs us to pass an energy policy that works with automakers to raise fuel standards, and makes corporations pay for their pollution, and oil companies invest their record profits in a clean energy future an energy policy that will create millions of new jobs that pay well and can't be outsourced. That's the change we need.
And maybe if he spent some time in the schools of South Carolina or St. Paul or where he spoke tonight in New Orleans, he'd understand that we can't afford to leave the money behind for No Child Left Behind; that we owe it to our children to invest in early childhood education; to recruit an army of new teachers and give them better pay and more support; to finally decide that in this global economy, the chance to get a college education should not be a privilege for the wealthy few, but the birthright of every American. That's the change we need in America. That's why I'm running for President.
The other side will come here in September and offer a very different set of policies and positions, and that is a debate I look forward to. It is a debate the American people deserve. But what you don't deserve is another election that's governed by fear, and innuendo, and division. What you won't hear from this campaign or this party is the kind of politics that uses religion as a wedge, and patriotism as a bludgeon that sees our opponents not as competitors to challenge, but enemies to demonize. Because we may call ourselves Democrats and Republicans, but we are Americans first. We are always Americans first.
Despite what the good Senator from Arizona said tonight, I have seen people of differing views and opinions find common cause many times during my two decades in public life, and I have brought many together myself. I've walked arm-in-arm with community leaders on the South Side of Chicago and watched tensions fade as black, white, and Latino fought together for good jobs and good schools. I've sat across the table from law enforcement and civil rights advocates to reform a criminal justice system that sent thirteen innocent people to death row.

How did the 2008 BCA (Billiards Congress of America) National 8 Ball Pool Tournament turn out for me?
Ive been back in town 4 days, Im about caught up with my work load and Im ready to spill the beans about the Vegas Pool Tournament.
I must confess that this was my worst performance ever in Vegas where the singles competition is concerned. This is the first time since the tournament was held in Denver which was late eighties (1988 or 1989), that I was 2 and out of the National tournament. (The Denver Nationals was my first major tournament 20 years back)
This year it was not because I played 2 bad dudes who ran out on me endlessly. Its because I did not prepare for this tournament in the proper manner and my game was not anywhere near up to par. I did run racks in both of my matches, so I wasnt totally asleep. On the other side of the coin, I missed a couple eight balls and general position on several shots.  I gave my two opponents enough opportunities to make them look good.
Ill be writing some future posts about the individual matches and there will be some cool content on the mental aspects of the game there as well. Stay tuned to this Blog Channel.

Days after two groups went head-to-head by staging major billiards tournaments in Metro Manila, master cue artist Efren Reyes spoke for the first time and clarified his organizations stand on what has now been called a major rift in the Philippine professional tour.
Mariin naming pinabubulaanan ang alegasyon na kami ay binayaran para sumali sa Villar, Reyes said, referring to the tournament organized by and named after Senate President Manuel Villar at Starmall in Alabang, Muntinlupa City.
Ang aming paglahok sa torneong ay kusang-loob at bilang pasasalamat kay Senador Villar sa kanyang suporta, he added in a letter sent to media organizations.
Reyes, dubbed The Magician in the international pro circuit, also said that the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP), will not join tournaments organized by the rival Billiards and Snookers Congress of the Philippines as long as it (BSCP) is led by people whose only aim is to make money out of the players.
Reyes is BMPAP vice-president.
The BSCP-sanctioned Mandaluyong Mayors Cup, which is part of the Philippine Pool Tour, is ongoing at the Mandaluyong City Hall. It is being organized by the group of BSCP head Yen Makabenta, the same man who brought the World Pool Championship to Manila in 2006.
The BMPAP led by managers Perry Mariano, Putch Puyat and Jonathan Sy demanded early this year of reforms in the BSCP and Makabentas resignation. Players who have notched their names in the international circuit likewise joined reform calls.
Makabentas critics said he is using a double standard in the BSCP because he also heads Raya Sports. The sports outfit runs Pro Tournaments.
BMPAP also complained that Makabenta has failed to focus BSCP on the development of amateur players, which is part of its mandate as a National Sports Association.
The BSCP chief has dismissed the allegations. He said that he has always looked after the players welfare.

Billiards is a term used to describe a family of games that are played on a table and with a cue stick. Commonly, the stick is used to strike billiard balls and move them around the table. Billiard games are played indoors and the most popular, which many people enjoy, is the game of pool.
Common pool games include 8-ball, 9-ball, straight pool and one-pocket. Pool tables are large square units that feature pockets for players to attempt sending the balls into. Previously exclusive to pool rooms, the game of pool has now become a popular household addition to many homes. Pool enthusiasts often include a pool room in their own home, which features a table, cue sticks and billiard balls. This is a terrific game for entertaining and is one of the most enjoyable games of competition that can be played indoors.
Because the game of pool is so very popular, it is used to entertain on many occasions. This article will attempt to provide a few ideas for hosting a pool tournament or competition in the comfort of your own home.
$ Pool is a terrific pastime to enjoy in the company of friends and family. Perhaps a family game of men against women or friends playing on teams against one another would make for a fun evening.
$ If you are having a family reunion or other social event, consider inviting everyone into your home for a friendly game of pool.
$ What if boys night out transformed into boys night in with a game of pool? This is a terrific way for him to have fun with his friends, but still enjoy the comforts of home.
$ If you are entering a professional pool tournament with the opportunity to win cash or other prizes, you will need to be on top of your game. Having a pool table in your home or basement may just provide you with the additional practice time and edge that you need to win out over the competition. If practice makes perfect, then you will be glad to have a pool table within your reach at any given moment.
$ Pool doesn’t have to be a competition. In fact, there is nothing wrong with practicing alone and just mastering some of your best pool moves.
Pool tables are available in a variety of sizes and are designed to fit an array of budgets. Large tables are designed for adults, but even the kiddies often love to play. For the youngsters, small pool tables are designed of sturdy plastic and feature small cue sticks and billiard balls for their enjoyment. Large tables range in price from several hundred dollars and up depending on the quality and type of table that you purchase. Children’s pool tables, on the other hand, are very inexpensive and can be found for less than $50.00. Thanks to the creative minds of toy manufacturers, pool really can be a family sport.

In a press conference this morning, Nacionalista Party President Manny Villar announced the holding of the Manny Villar Cup Billiards Tournament (Villar Cup) from May 6 to 10 at the Sportscenter of Starmall Alabang.
"Seeing more and more Filipinos getting international fame in billiards, support for this sport should be encouraged and enhanced," Villar said, referring to the likes of world renowned pool players Efren "Bata" Reyes, Ronnie Alcano, Django Bustamante, Alex Pagulayan, Dennis Orcollo, Lee Van Corteza, Warren Kiamco, Roberto Gomez and Rodolfo Luat, among others.
Villar Cup promises to present a fresh approach to billiards tournament in the country, where the Philippines' first Ring Game champion will emerge, he said.
The press conference was also attended by RP billiard patrons namely, Aristeo "Putch" Puyat, member, Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines Board of Directors.
"Billiards now matches the popularity of basketball among Filipinos, especially the youth and our poor countrymen. Villar Cup is our own little way of encouraging our youth to engage in sports, and move them away from illegal drugs," Villar said.
Villar Cup also features the Search for the New Billiards Idol's Sipag at Tiyaga Edition. Working in partnership with BMPAP, hundreds of aspiring cue artists from Cebu, Davao, Tuguegarao, Pangasinan, Bacolod, Quezon, and others are expected to join the search.
The search is an open tournament with a 9-ball format, double-elimination to Last 32, single elimination from then on. Race to 7 wins. Prize at stake is more than P1.2 million.
Villar said among the most awaited parts of the tournament is the Elite Professional Group, which will be played by the country's best pool players and a chance to play with the professionals.
