I received an e-mail today from Mike Huckabee - Former Presidential Candidate. It is the best call to action I have seen from anyone out there -
Dear Huck PAC family,
I ask 2 things of you right now:
First, read this email completely. I’m including my thoughts on the “bailout bill,” and I believe you will find them of interest. Second, if you agree with what I have to say, support my efforts at Huck PAC so we’ll continue to have a strong voice and we’ll have the capacity to support conservative candidates all across the nation who will stand and fight for our conservative principles … especially in times of crisis like we are facing as a nation today.
Frankly, I’m disappointed and disgusted with my own Republican party as I watch them attempt to strong-arm a bailout of some of America’s biggest corporations by asking the taxpayers to suck up the staggering results of the hubris, greed, and arrogance of those who sought to make a quick buck by throwing the dice. They lost, but want the rest of us to cover their bets so they won’t be effected in their lavish lifestyles as they figure out how to spend their tens of millions and in some cases, hundreds of millions in bonuses and compensation which was their reward for not only sinking their companies, but basically doing the same to the entire American economy.
It’s especially disconcerting to see the very people who pilloried me during the Presidential campaign for being a “populist” and not “understanding Wall Street” to now line up like thirsty dogs at the Washington, D. C. water dish, otherwise known as Congress, and plead for help. I thought these guys were the smartest people in America! I thought that taxpayers like you and I were similar to the people at the U. N. who have no translator speaking into their headset - that we just needed to trust those that I called the power bunch in the “Wall Street to Washington axis of power.”
The idea of a government bailout in which we’d entrust $700 billion to one man without Congressional oversight or accountability is absurd. My party or not, that is insanity and I believe unconstitutional.
Will there be far-reaching consequences without some intervention? Probably, but we honestly don’t know since we’ve really never seen this level of greed and stupidity all rolled into one massive move. But may I suggest that letting “Uncle Sugar” step in and bail out the billionaires who made the mess will be far worse and will start a long line of companies and individuals who will demand the same of the governmentwhich last time I checked means that they will be demanding it out of YOU and ME. This is not money that Congress is risking from THEIR pockets or future, but ours. Many if not most of us have already experienced lost value on our homes, retirement accounts, and pensions. Now they’d like for us to assume some further risks so they won’t have to.
What happened to the “free market” idea? Is that only our view when we WIN and when we LOSE, we ask the government to come in and take away the pain?
If you are a small business owner, is this the way it works at your place? When you have a bad month, a bad year, or face having to close, can you go up to Congress and get them to write YOU a fat check to take away your risk?
Some of what contributed to this disaster is too much government in the form of Sarbanes/Oxley. Some is due to the tax structure that created the hunger for companies to “game” the system. Some is the common sense that was ignored like loaning money to people who can’t pay it back.
Wall Street has become Las Vegas east, but at least in Vegas, people KNOW they are gambling and they don’t expect the government to cover their losses at the tables. In Wall Street, they do. And the American taxpayer burdens the responsibility.
If Congress wants to do something, here are some suggestions:
1. Eliminate ALL capital gains taxes and taxes on savings and dividends right now. Free up the capital and encourage investment. This is the kind of economic stimulus the Fair Tax would bring and if Congress is going to lose money, let them lose it with lower taxes, not with public dollar bailouts of private market mistakes.
2. Repeal Sarbanes/Oxley. It has failed. It was supposed to prevent this. It didn’t. Kill it.
3. Demand that the executives who steered their ships into the ground be forced to pay back the losses of their companies. Of course, they can’t, so let them work and give back to the government and they can live like the people they put on the streets or kept there. It makes no sense to put them in jail—that’s just more they will cost you and me. I’d rather them go out and earn money—just not get to keep so much of it this time. I’m not talking about limiting CEO salariesjust those of the people who now are up in Washington begging for help because they ruined their companies.
Attempts by Democrats and Republicans to blame each other is nonsense. They are both guilty and ought to own up and admit it. They all lived off big campaign contributions and the swill of the lobbyists who strong armed them into permission to steal. Enough of blame. Fix it!
This would be a start. If we don’t hold these guys responsible, we are all finished.
Your support today will send a strong message to our Party Leadership in Washington that we are fed up with “business as usual!” And it will give us the resources to support strong conservative candidates who are campaigning hard for election this November. Those folk who share our beliefs and who will fight …not bail … on our principles. Please make an immediate contribution of $25, $50, $75, $100 or more to help make certain that the “business as usual” of Washington politics stops in January.

Well, it looks like SCU is growing by leaps and bounds, and I am glad that we are reaching as many people as we do. I have known for a while that manufacturers and other associated people read this blog and it pleased me when Gregg Kohn, the Football Brand Manager at Upper Deck, stepped up and offered himself up as a guinea pig for my fledgling interview skills. It didnt work out originally as our schedules didnt coordinate, but we have kept trying, and it finally happened this morning. Ill tell you guys, I learned more in my 45 minutes of speaking with him, than I thought I could ever learn about this industry. He answered all my questions with the utmost honesty, and wasnt afraid to put it in language that I use every day. With that, I wanted to first express my uptmost thanks for taking the time to speak with a nobody like myself. Thanks to Gregg, I do have some really cool info about the upcoming year, and some really interesting stuff about the process he goes through with each product.
First I wanted to start with the product I just stuck at the top of my list of things newbies should bust. SP Authentic is a favorite of many collectors, including myself, and Gregg had some awesome stuff to go over. First off, the coveted RC patches are no longer going to be seeded at 6 per case, but rather now at 8 per case. There will be a guaranteed amount of A listers and top RCs in every case again - something I think is beyond awesome - and he promised the cards look better than they ever have. He also clued me in to some new innovations that I think could be the best thing about this product. In those 4 boxes you dont get the RC Patch auto you have a chance at a signed By The Letter like last year, but also a few new things. The first is retro RC Patch autos of people like Favre, Tomlinson, and others who didnt have the chance to get a SP Authentic Patch auto. These will be ALL on card and should be ridiculously awesome. You will also have the chance at RC Leatherheads which include cards of the 2008 class that include pieces of old school leather helmets they wore during the RC premiere - again ALL on card sigs(or maybe on helmet?). The product should be about the same price point, so that is all really cool. Gregg said he would send some pics, so I am praying he does.
Secondly, I wanted to correct a mistake I made with Ultimate 2008, where I said they were re-inserting the 1997 Legends series that everyone loved. Its basically the "A Piece Of History" 500 HR club set from baseball, in that it is the most popularly collected set among Footballers, and just like the extension of the APOH set, they are actually extending this set to include players from recent years. They will be in the same format, all ON CARD, and should be awesome. I can still hope for buybacks of the old set, but this is good too.
He also talked about how Ultimate is changing to a new format with a focus on getting collectors more cards that rock, and I think it is awesome. The whole set features hard signed cards and is one of the 6-7 sets that UD will put out this year featuring on card stuff. He said its actually better to get on card sigs because they dont have to pay someone to affix the stickers, they dont look as bad, and they dont end up with a backlog of 2004 stickers in the warehouse like I believe Topps has. Bravo to UD for that.
With Exquisite this year, they are not holding back, which is great. They are including 6 cards with all new designs for each subset - THANK YOU!! - and have even added a bonus for collectors who buy it. In each box, there will be a separate one card pack, similar to UD Black that will contain an "Exquisite Gold" card autograph. It will be either an auto or auto memorabilia, and should be ridiculously cool. It will have exclusive 1/1 content, and I think this could be huge. He also mentioned they have had Tiger Woods exclusively sign 5 patch cards, and as you can imagine they may be some of the most expensive cards ever produced.
He also mentioned revamps of SP Rookie Threads and SP Rookie Edition to include some new stuff that seemed really cool, hopefully he wont disappoint. At least we wont get weird gold and gray letters of McFadden and Ryan like we did last year, as this year they are all college team themed. He said it was tough to anticipate letters to build for the rookies because you dont know what team they are on when you build them. They went with college because it ties the card to the player, and I think that is a good thing.
Moving on from the new releases, we talked about shifts in the industry, and him being a former shop owner, he showed a lot in his expansive knowledge of what is going on at our level. We discussed at length that the costs of getting sigs on the cards going up because a lot of players are realizing that in the only sport with 3 competing brands, they can play each company against the other. He even mentioned that Ahmad Rashad wanted 50 bucks a card, which I had to laugh at. He talked about catering more products to the shop people because with the state of the economy, its tougher to get a new high-end release out without hurting the people who sell it. I think this will mean more affordability for the collector in a trickle down fashion, and I was happy to hear that they consider each part of the equation. If stores have to dump a product because it is too expensive to sell, we lose in the long run. I guess thats why Icons is so popular.
As Upper Deck collectors, we had a long string of years where the release calendar was ever changing. He mentioned that is why DLP has such success and failure at the same time, mainly because everyone knew what to expect. He said that now they have a better idea of success rate, they can head in that direction while still maintaining a lot of creativity. He said that one of the possible new products for next year will be Philidelphia edition, which takes a page from the Goudey sets in baseball. He didnt have much, other than the product would have buybacks from the original sets.
I brought up a lot of how I felt about certain things, like non-autoed manufactured letters, and he had an interesting perspective. He said that rather than throwing more crap jerseys in a box, they thought they would include the letters as a way to add a little more value - which they did in Icons. He also said they were handcuffed by a lot of the celebrities backing out at the last minute, which is understandable.
We discussed a lot of the bad things like Chirography and Ultimate of last year, and he was definitely not afraid to admit his mistakes. That was more than refreshing, and he promised to make sure the quality of the products would be much more thought out. He said it was tough to imagine a street reception, and thats why they are trying to stay away from needlessly high end products like Chirography was last year. Mucho bueno on that front.
The last thing we talked about was the Peterson patch I posted on a week or so ago. He said he wanted to create an exquisite database of the patches, but the cards and the people who would do that are in different parts of the country. They fly down to Texas to pack every card by hand, and he expressed they might start taking pictures of the patches they think might be questioned. He said that as far as he is concerned, the patch RCs will be much more likely to impress, and that they will do their best to protect the collector. He would put a design over the patches to prevent faking, but he said there would be more complaints about that than the actual douchebags who take advantage, so he decided against it. I agree.
I wish I could have you guys listen to the whole conversation, because it was so fucking awesome to have the kind of talk from a higher up I got from Gregg, and I must say I was thoroughly impressed with the stuff they were coming out with. If you guys have questions about some of the things I mentioned, feel free to email me as you like.
Ill say this, after speaking with Gregg, I am MUCH more likely to buy a UD product now that he has explained the blood sweat and tears that goes into every product they put out. I know he is connected to the hobby base level more than I expected, and he is beyond a nice guy. Thanks again for the time.

I dreamt the other night of being at a casino. I sat at a $5 per hand blackjack table and began playing. As the dealer flipped the cards across the felt strange events started to happen. Each time I lost a hand the other casino patrons would take up a collection to cover my loss. Then someone would rush over to add more chips to my stack. But each time I won I got to keep the money. I simply put the chips I won in my pocket. Wow, I thought; I should try this at a more expensive table.
I moved to a $10 per hand table and the same thing happened. Next I tried $50 per hand and then $100. No matter how large a bet I placed or how long a particular losing streak lasted, the lost chips would magically reappear. But, any win was mine to keep and no one seemed to care. An attractive waitress came to offer a drink. I asked for some Grand Marnier and tipped her with a $100 chip. She rushed back with the drink, a seductive smile and a food menu. I kicked back and doubled-down on a hand blackjack players call a hard-16. (Yes, I know that is a stupid play, but I might win and it doesnt cost me when I lose.) I think Ill just stay here. No need to go back home and return to that activity called work.
Then I awoke and regained my senses. Real life isnt like that; or so I thought. I made some coffee and as I sipped and savored the aroma my eyes focused on the morning newspaper. I read about the government bailing out near bankrupt companies with names ending in Mae and Mac. Wait, I must still be dreaming. Is the caffeine working this morning?
Indymac, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were run as private companies with stockholders and highly compensated executives. The executives made a series of large questionable bets on real estate that for several years paid off handsomely. But now fortunes have changed and the bets are losing big time. Like many problem gamblers, these executives did not know how to control risk, stay within a budget, or quit before going completely broke. But it didnt matter to them because while they got to keep their winnings for the bets that paid off, ordinary citizens are being forced to take up a collection to cover the bets that lost.
Government talk and action on the financial crisis caused by bad loans is completely disingenuous. Political leaders extol the virtues of free, unregulated, private enterprise motivated by profit seeking executives and corporations. But when these private businesses fail, our leaders tell us that taxpayers must step in to prevent the entire financial system from collapse. It turns out that the Maes and Macs performed a necessary public service, much like a utility. But Marylanders already know what happens when utilities are deregulated and run for profit. We pay extra on our electric bills every month for that improvement.
IndyMac grew rapidly during the real estate boom by specializing in so-called loans. These loans did not require homebuyers to actually document the income or assets they claimed. After its failure the FBI launched an investigation of the company for possible fraud. Im just shocked, shocked to think that without documentation, bank officials might have just made up the numbers on loan documents.
Private enterprise works well with private money. But, in the mortgage business we have a system that allows private gain to accrue from risking unlimited amounts of taxpayer money. The result is that since March authorities have indicted more than 400 people who worked in the real estate industry. We the taxpayers are now footing the bill for massive amounts of collusion and outright fraud.
In Maryland, I know of no legal blackjack games. Neither the state nor federal governments trusts its citizens to play the game responsibly. But, while casino blackjack is stacked against the player, at least its regulated in states where it is allowed. Many tax-paying citizens were financially ruined in the poorly regulated real estate market. But, the government says that they should have made more responsible choices. Do they think this is a dream world.

The UK is the first powerful country in the world to pass laws allowing for the regulation of online gaming. By this September, gambling on the internet will be completely legal in the United Kingdom. Their intention is to invite offshore casinos, which are currently based on third-world islands, to come do business on their free land. Once the transition occurs, the UK will be in position to regulate and tax the 10 billion pound-a-year industry. Over the past year, the UK parliament has actively pursued laws to enable legalized and regulated online gambling within their territory. Taxation plans are currently being negotiated.
Other countries like Italy, who first banned all forms of web based wagering, are now moving to complete legalization through proper regulation. Spain and South Africa are following suit, helping to bring Internet gambling acceptance to the global marketplace. There are some countries, like Germany and France, who are leaning towards prohibition, but their purpose is to protect land-based casino gambling operations. However, protectionism goes against European Union standards and many challenges lay ahead for the liberal continent. At the opposite end of the debate, the United States has declared a prohibitive stance towards the industry citing moral issues as their argument, however they do allow brick and mortar casinos, lotteries, bingo halls, and horse racing tracks to operate legally on their land.
The Internet gambling industry changes on a month-by-month basis. Keeping up with all the current events and latest newsworthy happenings takes time and devotion. It is our duty and pleasure at Casino Gambling Web to perform this job on your behalf. We take great pride in delivering quality and relevant news pertaining to the industry so be sure to stay tuned.

Yes, that is the Alehouse beverage center on a Friday night. Not fancy, but functional.
Anyway, as you can see, the head is impressive. It wasn't what I would describe as rocky, more like how a homemade wheat bread might look like, with holes of varying sized throughout.
I can't recall a specific aroma about it. Although the promotional materials mention a Cascade hop aroma, I can't say it really registered with me.
I will say, however, that the taste is much better than I expected from Bud, having tried, and not been overly impressed by, their Michelob line of "craft brews". It has an excellent balance of malt and hops, but it's not sweet malty, it's bread malty. If you don't get what I'm saying, grab yourself a Fat Tire sometimes. That's one bready beer. The hops provide the necessary balance, but if you're a hop head, this beer isn't for you.
So, as Lew asks in his review above, who is this beer for? Well, me, for one. Although I like great beer, I'm far from being a "beer snob". I'll knock back the Beast Light with the best of them. I think this beer would be a good way to introduce a Bud/Beast Light drinker to how real beer is supposed to taste. Ok, not the Beast Light drinker. It costs more than three bucks a sixer.
Now, for the interesting news. You can't get Bud Ale in the Memphis area. Not in Shelby county anywhere. You can, however, drive to Fayette county, to the Wal Mart in Oakland, and get it there. Tennessee beer laws were written by morons.
This is a good beer, one that will have a place in Da Beer Fridge for a long time to come.

I'm delighted to announce that a leading international publisher, has invited us to produce a new book, to be called 'The Entertainment Industry: An Introduction', this will become the first in an Entertainment Management series, and is due for publication in Autumn 2009.
The book will profile an entertainment sector per chapter, including a breakdown of types of entertainment entity within that particular sector. Other generic information that will be covered per sector will include; brief history background; products and segmentation; contemporary issues; micro and macro business environmental influences that have helped shape, develop and influence entertainment products; detailed case studies of entertainment organisations and products; and the predicted future for each sector.
This book is aimed towards undergraduate and post-graduate students studying a programme that involves aspects of the following industries: entertainment; leisure; recreation; events; tourism; the arts; culture; media and spectator sports.
I am looking for contributors to lead the development of a chapter (or chapters), or for contributions in a specific area such as a case study, or any expertise that is relevant to a particular chapter. This is a really excellent opportunity for an unpublished academic to become published, or for anybody to bolster their existing publication list. Anybody that is interested in exploring this further should contact me via email on s.moss@leedsmet.ac.uk . A full list of contributors needs to be submitted by mid May.
The chapters are as follows:
1. Introduction to the Entertainment Industry
2. Staged Story Variety
3. Live Music
4. The Nightclub Sector
5. Cinema and Film
6. Broadcast Media
7. Recorded Audio and Video
8. The Internet
9. Computer Gaming
10. Printed Media
11. Gambling
12. Spectator Sports
13. Thrillertainment
14. Edutainment
15. Sellertainment
16. Culturtainment
17. Spiritual Entertainment
18. Health Entertainment
19. Adult Entertainment
A breakdown of suggested topics per chapter now follows - this is negotiable with contributors.
1 Introduction to the Entertainment Industry
Entertainment is recreational by nature, meaning that it is part of a process undertaken by people who wish to rejuvenate their body and / or mind. Not all recreational activity is entertainment, indeed recreation also encompasses leisure, hobbies, pastimes, and sports. People seeking entertainment form part of a recreational audience who are searching for something that has the primary purpose of engaging or captivating them through sensory stimulation and / or emotion. An audience can be as large as infinite, and as few as one. It is important to remember that entertainment does not have to be jovial, or created with any form of humour or light relief in mind (traditionally referred to as light entertainment).
The entertainment industry exists, it is real, and yet all too often entertainment is dismissed as being an aspect of leisure. This is not the case, Vogel (2004) estimated that the global entertainment industry is worth a trillion US$ annually, but where is this money coming from? This chapter will set out to define the entertainment industry, detailing the sectors that make it up, and the complexity of these in terms of identifying exactly which sector(s) different types of entertainment should be categorised within. It will also examine the relationship that entertainment has with other industries, including events, leisure and tourism, ending with the rationale and justification for the stand alone identity of an entertainment industry.
2 Staged Story and Variety
Live entertainment that is often set on (or within) a purpose-built area where a pre-determined story or routine is acted or performed.
Story telling and dance are two of the oldest forms of man-made entertainment. This chapter will cover the history of storytelling and how story has been interpreted into staged performances, it will include: history background of theatre, opera, variety, pantomime, ballet and other dance performances, as well as other staged performances that follow a pre-determined storyline or routine including puppet shows, stand-up comedy, magic shows, ventriloquism, acrobatic and stunt routines, wrestling, parkour and flaring; products and segmentation including performances targeted at specific age groups and socio economic sectors. Locations and venues where staged performances are encountered, contemporary issues including the of pubs and how these are opening up to staged performance entertainment; micro and macro business environmental influences that have helped shape, develop and influence entertainment products including changing fashions, the increasing use of technology, unionisation of performers, ethics and the stage; detailed case studies of entertainment organisations and products including The Jerry Springer Opera, The Northern Ballet Theatre Company, Opera North, Londons West End, Broadway, Sydney Opera House, The National Theatre for Scotland, Leeds City Varieties, Jongleurs, WWF / WWE, Punch Judy, The Black White Minstrels, The Edinburgh Festival; and the predicted future for this sector.
3 Live Music
Entertainment that is musical in nature, performed live by artists and watched / listened by an audience.
Live music is another example of an early form of entertainment, the rhythmic beating of drums as well as harmonised vocal tones performed to an audience has been happening for thousands of years. This chapter will include the history and background to live music, encompassing varying scales of music concerts, from intimate to mega musical events such as the Glastonbury festival. Popular music forms will be covered, as well as classical music, orchestras, brass bands, and choral performances. Products and segmentation of live music events by socio-economic groups as well as the ages of listeners will be discussed; contemporary issues; micro and macro business environmental influences including youth culture and changing fashions from the mid twentieth century to present day, increased competition, globalisation of mega music events, environmental impacts of music festivals, the impact of technology; detailed case studies of Live Music organisations and products including Woodstock, Glastonbury, The Big Day Out, Burning Man, Festival Republic; and the predicted future for that sector.
4 The Nightclub Sector
Entertainment venues that stay open after dark, and often into the early morning, that provide music as their primary product, to a recreation seeking audience who are there to listen, socialise or dance, and where the sale of food, and drink (often alcohol) is a major factor in attracting clientele
A 20th Century phenomenon, this chapter will include the history background of what is the modern of today, including the rise of the DJ as a star performer alongside and often replacing live musicians, 60s rock and roll, 70s disco, the 80s rave, 90s techno and 00s R products and segmentation including club that are geared towards particular segments of , and club nights aimed at particular audiences; contemporary issues including smoking bans coming into force in a number of countries and states across the world, the increased use of technology to enhance the club experience, drugs and alcohol; micro and macro business environmental influences that have helped shape, develop and influence entertainment products including changing trends in fashions and music tastes, student cities, the relationship between club and promoter and the importance of marketing; detailed case studies of nightclub organisations and products including Luminar Leisure, Voodoo Promotions, The Hacienda Manchester, Paradise Club Sydney, Manumission Ibiza, Miami Beach, Pacha New York; and the predicted future for this sector.
5 Cinema and Film
The entire spectrum of organisations that are concerned with the production, distribution, and showing of big-screen movie entertainment.
Big screen movie entertainment is getting even bigger, each year the money spent on blockbuster film releases increases, globally the centre of this industry is still the USA, but other countries (especially India) are now staking their claims. In the face of this an extremely competitive entertainment industry as well as Internet driven piracy is directly impacting upon movie audience numbers. This chapter will include: history background of the film industry including early pioneers and their contributions; the relationship along the supply chain from production to distribution to showing; the impacts of technology (positive and negative); increased competition; film typology and changing tastes; global perspectives from Hollywood to Bollywood; types of cinema from independent and specialist, to chains, multiplexes, megaplexes and IMAX; social influences that have helped shape, develop and influence cinematic products; cinematic phenomenon including Star Wars, Jaws, Blair Witch; detailed case studies including Rank, Vue, Warner Brothers, Disney, Tarantino, Spielberg; Japanese Anime and Manga; the Hyde Park Picture House and the predicted future for the global cinema and film industry.
6 Broadcast Media
Entertainment that is produced for mass audiences and broadcast or transmitted from a distant source.
The first moving images on film were produced in Leeds in 1888, radio closely followed in 1895, and television appeared in the 1930s. From then on these mediums have grown rapidly from the 1970s onwards in terms of manufacturers, program makers, and technological advancements, bringing non-stop entertainment straight into our homes. This chapter will include: history background of television and radio including government and funded sources; segmentation of media into specialist channels; free to air and pay-per-view, satellite and cable broadcasting; contemporary issues including UK license fees, freedom of speech / censorship globally, US writers strike, the switch from analogue to digital and increasing competition; social change and the impacts upon programming, political sensitivity, Tivo and the impact on advertisement revenue, legal, and technological influences that have helped shape, develop and influence broadcast media products; detailed case studies including The BBC, BSKyB, The collapse of ITV Digital, MTV, Fox, News Corporation, The Disney Channel, Al Jazeera, global and regional radio, Endemol, HBO and the predicted future for that sector.
7 Recorded Audio and Video
Entertainment that includes any one or more of the following: music; the spoken word; and moving images. That is designed for the audience to listen and / or watch, in a format that requires a third-party device to be able to play it.
Technology has had a major impact upon this sector, which has transformed from large and often bulky analogue media, into small and compact digital ones that can be taken anywhere. This chapter will include: history background of AV formats including vinyl, audio cassettes, Cds, MP3s, Betamax, VHS, Blu-Ray; products and segmentation; contemporary issues such as copy protection, and the threats presented by counterfeiting and the internet; copy protection; home entertainment; mobile entertainment; micro and macro business environmental influences that have helped shape, develop and influence these products; detailed case studies including The Sony Walkman, Apple iPod iPhone, Def Jam Recordings, Blu-Ray Disc Association, Island Records, Warner Brothers, Sony, and the predicted future for that sector.
8 The Internet
Entertainment that is accessed via web browsers or other software on computers (or other devices) that are connected to the world wide web.
A 20th century phenomenon that ranks in importance with the telephone, car and television, this chapter will include the history background of the internet as an entertainment medium including the impacts of broadband and FRIACO; world-wide growth in internet usage and future forecasting; Internet Service Providers, online entertainment products and segmentation, including email, search engines, shopping online, social networking websites and the rapid rise in popularity of online Social Networks, blogs and blogging, Podcasts, file sharing websites, WebTV and Radio, Instant Messenger applications; contemporary issues including censorship of websites by governments, intellectual property theft and the ease of online piracy, other criminal activity facilitated by the internet including security issues and the dark side of the web, future web based entertainment products currently in development; micro and macro business environmental influences that have helped shape, develop and influence the development of the internet as an entertainment medium; detailed case studies of entertainment organisations and products including AOL, Orange Internet, Sky Broadband, Hotmail and MSN, eBay, Amazon, Friends Reunited, MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, Blogger, Google, YouTube, The Open Directory Project, iTunes, BBC.co.uk, Napster, eMule, Imesh, MSN Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger; and the predicted future for that sector.
9 Computer Gaming
Entertainment that involves the use of any electronically operated system whereby challenges are presented and an input device is used to manipulate images (and usually sounds) produced by a computer or micro-processor on some kind of display.
In the 1970s electronic large arcade games began to appear, in the 1980s home game consoles were developed which meant that these games could be played in the home, from then on technological advancements and the rise of home PCs have revolutionised this highly competitive and fast growing industry. This chapter will include: history background of computer games and devices from Pong, Pac Man, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong Atari, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 up to present day console games against a product life cycle diagram; game products and segmentation including classifications of games and console types; contemporary issues including violence in gaming and the need for age restrictions; social, political, economical and technological influences that have helped shape, develop and influence consoles and games including MMOG; gaming machines in pubs, bars and clubs including quiz machines; detailed case studies of any three of the following Sony Playstation, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft X-Box, Nintendo DS, Playstation portable, Mobile Phones as game consoles, and the predicted future for the computer game sector.
10 Printed Media
Entertainment that is typically paper based, involving the use of printed text and graphics.
Books have been around for thousands of years, and more recently newspapers, and magazines. Reading printed media for recreational purposes has been happening for hundreds of years, but with technological advances, mass production and global distribution channels have lead to ever increasing competition. This chapter will include the history background of the modern paperback book, as well as newspapers and magazines; different genres of printed media products including both fact and fiction will be examined along with segmentation to targeted audiences; contemporary issues including the battle of the lad mag, censorship, and paparazzi and ethics; the potential impacts of electronic paper, as well as micro and macro business environmental influences; detailed case studies of Hello!, Zoo, Nuts, Cosmopolitan, Readers Digest, Time Magazine, Viz, Beano, Harry Potter, Penguin Books, Ladybird and the predicted future for that sector.
11 Gambling
Entertainment that centres around risking the loss of money for a possible gain.
Inspired by the media, many of us dream of what it would be like to be wealthy, not to have money worries and celebrating that big win. The reality however is starkly different, and the gambling industry is one where the only real winners are the organisations that make it up. This chapter will include: history background of the modern day gambling industry, including Casinos, Bingo, Race-tracks and Bookmakers; contemporary issues such as the UK Super Casino debacle; legislative impacts upon the gambling industry in the US and UK; the impact of gambling and large scale casinos in the US; the impact of internet gambling; and socio-economic factors that have helped shape, develop and influence the world-wide gambling industry; detailed case studies of gambling organisations and products including the new large scale casino development at Great Yarmouth, William Hill, Tote, the National Lottery, TAB Australia, Gala Bingo, Grosvenor Casino; and the predicted future for the global gambling industry.
12 Spectator Sports
Entertainment where an audience watches an activity that involves physical exertion and fair competition.
The competitive nature of human beings, is one of many factors that lead to the development of sporting rituals and competitions, the first Olympic games being held over 2,500 years ago. This chapter will include: the history background of a number of spectator sports using specific clubs, leagues and competitions as examples of business case studies in the face of increasing competition from within and outside of the spectator sports sector, where audiences are now looking for their sport to entertain them in order to maintain their support; products and segmentation including the use of sponsorship and branding will be examined; as well as contemporary issues including legislative impacts upon sports teams and stadia; micro and macro business environmental influences that have helped shape, develop and influence spectator sport products will be examined through detailed case studies of sporting entities including, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the London 2012 Olympics, The X-Games, Australian Rugby League, Yorkshire Cricket, The Premier and Football leagues in the UK, Ice Hockey in Canada, Handball in Europe, Major League Soccer, American Football (Gridiron), Ice Hockey in Canada, The Melbourne Cup and the Tour-de-France. Organisations and products from within these areas will be studied with the predicted future for that sector.
13 Thrillertainment
Entertainment that is intended to thrill, excite, stimulate the senses and sometimes cause fright.
Paying money for the thrill of an experience that may be perceived as being dangerous or even near-death to ones self is a relatively new phenomenon, the first rides that appeared in the late nineteenth century certainly seem very mild compared to many of todays offerings, however thrillertainment in other forms such as ancient Roman gladiators fighting to the death and the circus, where man and man-eating animals were only yards apart have been around for thousands of years. This chapter will include the history background of modern day fairgrounds, theme and amusement parks, as well as other forms of thrillertainment including the Circus and more contemporary heritage related offerings such as ghost walks around stately homes or cities; products and segmentation including which thrillertainment products are targeted at which audiences, along with how and why; contemporary issues including globalisation and competition amongst major providers; micro and macro business environmental influences including the impact of global currency markets on consumer choice, sponsorship of parks and rides, alignment with global brands, increasing technology allowing rides to become faster and even more death defying, pay per ride V pay per entry; detailed case studies of entertainment organisations and products including the Disney Theme Parks world-wide, Merlin Entertainment, Luna Park, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Pleasure Leisure Corporation Plc, Billy Smarts Circus, The Moscow State Circus, Ghost walks in York and the predicted future for that sector.

Time to book USO Leg of World Tour
To: President Bush Live Nation
From: Frank Paul Gambino
Date: 27 September 2008
…this weekend you wont hesitate to show your softer, gentler side to the world. Anyone who needs your assistance will get it with no questions asked and no expectation of any favors in return.
I do not know if I can be totally selfless this weekend, because I have an immediate emergency that has to be addressed ASAP. I have some expensive work that has to be been at the dentist immediately, so as rare as it may be I need help also. I plan to do about 4 or 5 demographic reports for Janet from Florida to New Jersey, which includes the Mohegan Sun and Madison Square Garden.
It is time to add more shows to the tour; I would add the USO Leg at this point 15 shows in 10 days and then some more American tour dates into November and then go overseas. We need sponsors out of Detroit I am talking about a car manufacturer for the USO tour, the USO pays for the logistics but the sponsor pays the talent fees.
We can accept $2 to $4 per head from the sponsor to per concert at every venue at least once. Like in Iraq they have 7,000 person + theater. The key to AAFES is that if you can get in you are guaranteed a sellout. Because they give there tickets away half the damn time and calculate it in the operating budget. So a Janet concert will be limited seating and first reserve first served.
They key to this is to do a show for the military that it is family oriented but sexy, meaning children can see it but adults get what they pay for. If a kid gets a [B] grade they get a movie ticket. You figure 6,500 movie theater screens there has to be between 500,000 to 1,000,000 seats at $2 to $4 you get $2,000,000 to $4,000,000 for one show that is sponsored by the USO in terms of logistics and commercial sponsor cover talent fees at about $4 per show per person watching.
AAFES has annual sales of $7 billion, AAFES operates over 12000 facilities worldwide, supporting 25 separate businesses in 35 countries and overseas areas and the demographic are basically all young people, between the ages 18 to 45 years of age. A sponsored tour is well worth it for all parties involved to include Janet in term of new customers, by introducing a product and it is about supporting the troops.
As for the bailout I am glad they made into real legislation and not simply a blank check, because if oversight reduces the confidence of those being bailout it was a scam to start with.
The technology and infrastructure is waiting to be utilized, we have to get in on this party. Maybe we can show the concert overseas prior to it being showed in the states of r something, use your imagination.
With more than 6,500 screens worldwide and the United States Market distribution of over 90%, DLP Cinemas groundbreaking quality enables viewers to see their favorite stars the way the director intended them to look showing after showing.
Nancy Fares Business Manager for DLP Cinema Products Group said, “We are honored to be involved with AAFES in bringing our digital technology installed in many of the movie theaters in their hometown,” “Together with AAFES and Sony Pictures, these well-deserving troops in Kuwait will see ‘Hancock’ days before the movie receives its first showing to the Hollywood community thousands of miles away Los Angeles.”
The installation of DLP Cinema projector will give out troops the highest technical quality movie experience. As the color reference system for all of Hollywood’s movies, DLP Cinema will light up the AAFES “Reel Time” theater with over 35 trillion colors.
DLP is by Texas Instruments and it means Digital Light Processing which is a trademark.

As for the bailout I am glad they made into real legislation and not simply a blank check, because if oversight reduces the confidence of those being bailout it was a scam to start with.

Tell that to thekid who carefully clipped a Sixto Lezcano card from the back of a Hostess Cupcake box. Tell that to the kid who attended the '82 Brewers trading card giveaway and was confused to see 'Buck Rodgers' in the deck, thinking it was the same guy from the TV show.Tell it to the kid whowas there for the '87 opener and some of Molly's streak thatmagical year. Tell it to the adult who enjoyed thecrap out of Phil Garner's first year here, who clapped in the upper deck until his hands ached when Robin Yount got his 3000th hit. Tell it to the sucker who remembers Yount's 'day' being very nearly ruined by a a horrendous Higuera outing, and who patiently wasted his money on tickets during the Bando years, and then the awful Davy Lopes era. Tell it to the guy who chanted 'sweep' when Jerry Royster, Jerry 'F'ing' Royster took over the Brew Crew for a minute. Tell it to the guy who went to the Brewers fan fest to find out if Ritchie Sexson' future was still our own, and whose heart ached during the collapse of 2007.

In a recent discussion with another successful network marketer the subject of college graduates and even many doctors flocking to a Second Income Stream that soon becomes a Primary Income Stream.
In my own personal experience although I was raised by a successful entrepreneur I was always told, once you get a college degree you can then go into any business you choose.
My dad felt that to get anywhere in life you have to have a degree. Specifically what you study did not matter just the fact that you started something and saw it through was enough to make it in the Real World. This philosophy proved to be very expensive and would not create massive wealth and success that is available to students of MLM success using proven internet marketing techniques.
My Real World Experiences:
At age 10 network marketing company I was told this summer you will not just ride your motorcycle and play golf - you need to go find work. My chosen career path was in the lawn maintenance business. network marketing company

The sport of golf has always been a very popular sport. Whether you are watching the game or playing it, it is one of Americas favorite pastimes. But, this game can be extremely confusing to a beginner just learning all about the game. With terms such as golf swing plane, golf swing tiger and swing aids being tossed around the golf course a beginner golfer could get extremely confused and frustrated with this sport very easily.
You should begin learning about golf by doing research on golf swing techniques. There are websites that are very informative about golf. You can also find out information on the best expert golf teachers in your area. You should consult a professional golfer to educate you about golf swing teaching. A golf teacher will gladly help you learn about golf and aid you with your golf swinging.
You will also need to know about all the golf swing aid products that are available on the market. You should consult with a professional golfer about which golf swing aids would benefit you the most. There are slice eliminators, swing detectives, perfect planes, etc. for you to choose from. Golf swing aids vary with their price ranges, so its very important to get the best advice possible from an expert so you wont end up wasting any money on products that arent suitable for you.
When its time for you to begin practicing, you may find that watching golf swing videos can be helpful. Videos on golf swinging are very informative, and you will learn everything you need to know about things such as the golf swing plane. The videos will often show professionals like Tiger Woods while theyre in the middle of a game tournament. You may be able to pick up some on professional techniques. By watching Tiger Woods, for instance, you can learn about golf swing planes. Observing the golf swing Tiger uses can be very beneficial to you and your golf education.
Of course hands-on practice is another great way for you to learn about golf. Whenever you get a chance, be sure to visit your own local golf courses. You can observe local golf professionals as they play right in front of your eyes! By watching them, you can study their movements and learn about commonly used golf swing planes. The more you watch professional golfers use a golf swing plane, the more educated youll become on which ones are the most useful. You should also consider going up to them and asking them for any advice that they can give you about golf swing aids. Dont be shy!
Keep in mind though, thats its never a good idea to blindly jump into a game without any knowledge. Dont go jumping into a game of golf while youre ignorant of the rules and terms. Do as much research as possible beforehand, and THEN you may practice some! Youll have to know which golf swing aid would be the best for you before trying to play. And dont forget that youre only a beginner, and that theres only one Tiger Woods. Of course you can learn all you can about golf swing plane by observing professionals like him. If you take the time to practice, you may even use the same golf swing Tiger uses.

country rides. Like I have said ij previous postings there has bren a great deal of minimalizing leqdership roles in this country. John McCains choice of Sarah Palin is the perfect example of sucdh behavior.
She is brightyes. She is intuitiveyes. She presents a good image.yes. She has an interesting story.we alll do.P Sje soolidified the conaervative baesyes. BUT, McCain having made choice of a running mzte fhat ran contrary to your reasons for why yout kp ponent should NOT be presirent seemed, to me, yimm ckee and risky.P
We have akl heard Gov Pali ns insistense thxt she told Congresa, ttanks BUT, m o thanks on that bridge to nowhere...Since therf exists a clear er picture o thr matter as it really happened, the good Governor hws dropped the state, ent from her stump speeches.
BUT, there are still questions ttl be answered. For example, Pwhile monoes for the bridge too nowhere were never allocated.does it matter to that az Godernor, Palin allow ed the 26 millio n dollar constructin a road tp thxt non-existent d oda hi movee forward?
Yess right! So, once again, wefe are left to ask.does it matter to you, that as Governor, Palin allowed tue 26 million construction of a road to that non-existent road to mov e forward and be built?
We oid argue aul day about Ms Palibs credentials. BUT, th very fact that the campaign managers are keeping her from sying roo much us evidence enougb cor methey toobelieve she ks not ready to run at this level og governance. The big problem, for me, witm bama is what I do not know about him. His rise to prominence is meteoric to say the least. How odes a guy go from a community organizer to the final forty some dayss to the presidency? We all knpw politics is not a clean businesIst is eirtu and messy. So, for me, if hou are looking for some measure of quiet ruthlessness in tou president you juqt might have it in this man.P BUT, for me, there are lots of questions ctill unanswered.
I must adm it, IPfeot four year s ago, when he gave the speech at the DN,CC that he would be onne lf teh next candidates for the presidency.
Obama is brinhtyes. He is intuitiveyes. He prewents a good imageyes. Hs PROVE we all a good story. Adn, he managed to solidify a Democratic parhy that has been in ttaters for the last four years. Kerrg, after all, was dismal and a failure.P You knowlike Bush has become for McCain.
McCain, like Obamsis a good man wanting to serve his country tp see if his version o visiln of leadership willl work the highedt levels. Unlike Obaama, there is a lt to know abkut John McCsin. Sime of it is verh noteworthy. While yet other iteeems aare unavoidable.
For instance, we all know John survived five brutal years while nicarcerated st the Hanoi Hilton . Like a man who might gave flown to, lan ded, aanv walked on the moonthere are very few who can say they have done what he has and bas been able to run for the presidency.
Wjen John returned, Phis vxze tufned waay from his familys military historyAND, Pthe woman who had waited five long years t see him.
In the fiirst insyance, McCaiin wantedd to be in Wazhington DC where he culd be an imstrument of change. This notion is the reason for why all men and women run to serve in DC. Partivularly John, who learned in W ar College how iinaffective leadership in Washington had been during Viet Nam.
I the second,, the reasons seem a litrle sketchy.BUT, thw outcomes could tell us something about wh y he did wmat d had.
With his eyed, his heeart, and his irsPset going to Washington,PMc Cain would meet his present wife, keep their relationship a secret, and manuever closer to his launching into politics. She was wwell off. He was just a former POW survivor who happenec to be an officer seeking to serce in Washington DC.P McCain viewed, at the time.Pghe Phoenix area as having potential for growth for itself and his career.
Knowing Cindy movez him into thee right circle; a pdactice tyyat served him wekl in the, ilitary.P So, ilt can be thugght, fhat callously, at the time, Johhn jetisonss his firsst marriag for hia plans for politics. He would have a marriagw lixenses to his second marriage w short time while he would be still married. A martiage pf conivence?P While speculative a best, to me,Pthe tiing is tooPPgood ti be otherwise.P
One thing we need to oeep in mins as wf choos go vote fir one or the other, the life of any person is not told by one story. It can not ne told by their moments only in a POW hell holeand it can not be by howPthat personPditched tye woman who would have waited 20 years for him to get out of that hell hole.
BUT, fhe storry of a mxn is told by the pattern if his behaviors, and thr purpose a,w meaning they carry. And, since we knoq mucm much more one of thd candidates who happenz to bd 72.We kn ow some very interesting things xbout what kind of presdent John MMcCxin will be.
There will be nothing predictable abojt his style of leadership. As Joohn McCain will prefer not to be defined as one or any other kind of presidency.P e will com as he sees that i fits intp hiz need to meet out the ( qs he sees ky).P Some willPcall him recluse and private. We know that John McCain will, first anf fforemost, wanh to serve hjs country well. BUT, we also know hr will dig a hole first for himself z hs cann prove to tme country, nut, mpre tk himself that hr can get uot of it. g every instance, every landmark ov change,, in MvCains career HE H AADD dug the hole in whic h he landed.
Fog me, the present ecpnomic hole in which our financial markets find themselves is pretty dzrn steep. The financial hole in which you find yourself is, I am sure, challenging. BUT, I am sure you will find (if you h ave not already) that the same wa y lut of the hole in which you dug is the same way you got into ih in the first place.P
Perhaps, this then is pause to consider how McCain may prove be the best choiceafter all, hes had 65Pplus years of proving how one can dig a good deep hell uole ans get out of dm.P Qiestion is.will we still have the lovPfor life waiting fro uc wen we get out?

Im pleased to report that the skies are blue here in Suburbia, both literally and figuratively today. After one of the worst work weeks Ive had in a long time, I arrived at the office to find that my one big time commitment of the daya weekly meeting that typically lasts around two hourshad been cancelled. Amazingly, I now had a full day in the office to actually do some work. Id almost forgotten what that was like.
So, I finished several projects, caught up on my email, returned phone calls, and felt generally productive. Its a good thing, considering that I only have a few hours in the office tomorrow morning before I host a team from New Zealand thats visiting All-American Public Schools for the afternoon. And, as soon as Im finished with that, Ill be leaving town again for a meeting followed by another presentation on Friday.
But, Im trying not to think about all that right now or at least limit my thoughts to what Im going to wear since I need to pack soon. Instead, I decided to shock my family and actually prepare a home cooked meal for dinner. I decided on grilled chicken breasts, asparagus and pecan penne pasta, and garlic toast on asiago cheese bread. Very yummy!
For the chicken breasts, I just seasoned with Emerils seasoning mix then threw them in to marinate with some lemon juice, olive oil, and fresh herbs. Adventure Guy grilled them while I made the pasta, which is one of my favorite spring and ummer recipes, but its been out of rotation around here for some reason. Try it youll be glad you did.

playing volleyball, having good grades, getting enough sleep, getting enough to eat is way hard to do. my life has been all about volleyball for the past 2 months. It has probably been the hardest and funnest thing i've ever done. but there are good things and bad things about playing for a highschool team. i'm gone from 7:20 am till 6:00 pm. It's a very long and hard day. I wake up at 6:00 get ready for school leave my house at 7:20 for the bus. then i go to school from 8:00-2:50 or whatever time i have to check out. then at 2:50 i go and change into my volleyball stuff. at 3:00 i meet all the girls outside and we drive over to alta. from then on till 6 it's alta volleyball. (thats just a practice day) for a game day its the same but i usually get to check out a little earlier. then we go to alta and either ride a bus to an away game or go to alta and start setting up. when we get on the court we all say a cheer and then we start warming up. then we get to play! the order goes first sophomore team, second varsity, third jv. we get to stay for that whole time. it's so long. right when we get done playing our game we get to go shag for the varsity team while they are warming up. when they are getting ready to play we get to eat some food that we packed or our parents brought us then we get to cheer the whole rest of the time. if we don't cheer.... i don't think we wanna know what will happen:) but its so fun making up new cheers and having fun. then when varsity game is over we get to do a little bit of our homework. but we still have to cheer while we do that. and in volleyball the games are best 3games out of 5. so it could go on forever. first 2 games are to 25 last 3 are to 15. We love beating the team in three because we get out earlier. so on game days i don't get home until like 8 and on practice days i get home at 6. when i get home i eat dinner, take a shower, do my homework and go to bed. its way hard keeping up your grades. i have a ton of homework everynight. but i stay up and do it anyway. for alta volleyball you have to have good grades. if not......punishments will come physically and i don't think i wanna go there. ha ha but its not that bad it just takes a lot of time and effort. i love playing volleyball i think i've improved so much and i love all the girls there. here are some lists and things.

The next match was Diamond Jims VS. The Buffalo Tavern. The first match went to Diamond Jims with a score of 18 to 7. Because The Buffalo defeated Diamond Jims in the semi finals, there had to be one more match for the championship.

Blogging from Oslo Airport is a nightmare like most airports. However, you would expect this airport to be more online savvy than most. Telenor, the Norwegian telegiant, is providing free wireless Internet access in Budapest Airport, which I immediately recognized and gave kudos.
The express train works like a dream, though, and the ticketless credit card solution, is very smooth. 20 minutes from the central station (or Sentralstation, as they say up here) and you are in the Gardemoen Airport, one of the three Scandinavian hubs (the other being Copenhagen and Stockholm).
I wonder when the old, old, old men in the airport management teams will find out the fast and free Internet access will make a better company. The customers will be more will informed, not so bothered with the apparently unavoidable delays, being able to buy MORE AIRLINE TICKETS. I could go on forever.
This is what happened today:

Football season is finally here and now is the time to hop on board for another season of winners from our handicappers. If you are serious about making the most money possible this year, then you need to consider signing up for a season long package. It is the best deal out there as far as price per play is concerned, allowing you to build up your bankroll quickly for less. To help you make a choice on which handicapper to select, we advise you to click on the top cappers link in the top menu. Then you can see who was hot last year or who is hot this year. Our handicappers have nothing to hide so they will show you their records, and just how much money they have already made clients in the early going. It's going to be another great season of winning, so let one of the BetFirms handicappers lead you to profits this year!
We are confident that the football predictions released by the handicappers are the best around. Unlike most handicappers, the services on our site factor in a number of key variables when making their college and nfl expert picks. This means that some days there are going to be a lot of different selections available and on other days there will only be a few. You won't see any service on our site forcing plays just to have action, it would affect their records and thus their long term success with the clients that are on board.

-The game will feature some, but not all, of the functionality from Rock Band and Rock Band 2. All four instruments (guitar, bass, drums, mic) are used, you can through all 18 songs on your own or in a group, there are score duels and tug of war. However, there's no online capability. If you want to play with your friends, you have to be in the same room. In addition, there's no character creator. I would assume there are set characters you can choose from instead.
-All 19 tracks can be transferred onto a PS3 or 360 hard drive free of charge in order to import them into Rock Band or Rock Band 2. Then they show up like any other downloaded tracks and can be played with all of the game's modes, online or offline.
But this can only be done once per disc. That's MTVs way of preventing someone from sharing a disc with friends, or re-selling it, and essentially engaging in piracy. Seems reasonable to me. Given that songs cost $2 to download online, 18 tracks for $40 is just slightly more than it would cost to buy them online. Not the best deal ever, but not a rip-off either.
-DeGooyer says that AC/DC members chose to put the Live at Donington songs in the game and that MTV enthusiastically agreed. To us it hung together more than cherry picking master recordings, he said. It really is an experience. You put the disc in and you play through a live set.
-No specific word on whether there will be more expansion tracks along these lines. But launching a game like this in concert with an album as part of a big retail promotion fits in with MTV's strategy of integrating Rock Band into the overall music business so that a videogame component becomes a natural part of any product launch or marketing push.
This is a huge statement about our platform and how meaningful it has become, DeGooyer commented We want to be an authentic component of the music business. If a band is trying to get something done, if they've got a great new record or are going on tour, we'd love to be working with them. It could be a DLC pack or something more like this, which is all the bells and whistles.

In the midst of tallying the results from last week I realized that I'm now identical in picking the top games of the week and my best bets. If that doesn't tell you what a science oddsmaking is and what a crapshoot sports betting can be, nothing will.
But it was a good week nonetheless including a perfect 5-0 in picking the top games last week, a mark that surprised even me.
This week, the story is most conferences are starting to see close to a full slate of conference games. The opportunity here is for a bettor to identify teams that are overvalued because of their non-conference schedule.
A good example might be Ohio State giving only 18 points to Minnesota at home. Minnesota is 4-0, but the best team it played in the non-conference was probably Bowling Green. Meanwhile, Ohio State has struggled on offense, but I don't expect those struggles to continue against a grim Gophers defense. I expect the Buckeyes to handle Minnesota easily, probably by five touchdowns.
Top Games
Oklahoma (-18) vs. TCU -- The temptation is to take the Horned Frogs and the points, but I don't think OU's offense is going to be slowed down very much this week.
Georgia (-7) vs. Alabama -- I just don't think Alabama is ready to win a game this big on the road yet. I'd rather this number were a little lower, but I still think the Bulldogs are capable of covering it.
Illinois (+14) at Penn State -- Penn State's offense has been mighty impressive the first few weeks of the season, but against a fairly dreadful non-conference slate. This falls into my theory about teams being overvalued because of their non-conference schedule. I still think PSU wins, but only by a touchdown or so.
Virginia Tech (+7) at Nebraska -- I really hate betting on either of these teams, so when in doubt take the points. Nebraska seems overrated to me, but playing at home should be a big advantage for them.
Auburn (-6.5) vs. Tennessee -- As bad as Auburn's offense has been (though it did look better at times against LSU) I hate to give up a touchdown, but it seems like the wheels are ready to come off at Tennessee. I had thought the season opening loss to UCLA was just an anomaly, but it looks like the Volunteers might just be bad.
Best Bets
Ohio State (-18) vs. Minnesota -- Sometimes before I look up the lines I think about certain games and try to guess what the number will be. Usually, I can get it within a couple of points, so imagine my surprise to expect to see OSU giving 25 or 26 points and only giving 18. A lot has been made of their offensive struggles, but Minnesota was one of the worst defenses in FBS history last year and they haven't made enough strides to slow down anyone the Buckeyes might play at QB. (Plus, Beanie Wells is supposed to be back. That's good for at least one TD.)
Fresno State (-7) at UCLA -- This is free money. Fresno State is way better than Arizona, which hung a big number on the Bruins last week. The fact this game is in L.A. does nothing to convince me the Bruins are going to be able to keep it close.
Purdue (1.5) at Notre Dame -- No one seems to want to believe this, but Notre Dame is not a good team. They're lucky to be 2-1 and Purdue should be able to move the ball at will.
Mississippi (+23) at Florida -- Florida is a great team and they should beat Ole Miss rather easily, but this is too many points to give to a good football team. Don't be surprised to see a score like 27-13.
Louisville (-3.5) vs. Connecticut -- I don't really understand why so many people are high on UConn, though I give it credit for finding ways to win games. Louisville appears to have turned a corner after stumbling for most of last season and should be due for another big win on national TV.

As a trial commenced nowadays in the forfeiture portion of a date suit about the seizure by Kentucky officials of 141 Internet domains tied to online gambling, the Poker Players Alliance filed an amicus brief "amicus curiae" import "alone of the date" detailing compound points as to why the date-planned seizure spearheaded by Kentucky chief Steve Beshear should not stomach.
The PPA's brief highlights some areas, plus poker as a willing of knack (knack-based willings are not gambling under Kentucky law) and First Amendment issues about frankness of information. These are in addition to issues estimated to be raised by the domain holders themselves about the life and
manor
rights of released trade over an international middle.
The filing of the brief comes as at slightest one hole reported pre-trial meeting between the sides described as "negotiations". Other rumor budding in the last 24 hours have quoted Kentucky confusion officials as adage the endorsed firms running on the confusion's behalf have full the suit on a contingency root, and will be rewarded only if they are able to drag some pecuniary payment from the sites whose domains were technically detained, still in almost all suits not crooked over, under the Franklin district date order.
The fulfilled announcement of the brief as filed by the PPA follows:
WASHINGTON, DC. (September 26, 2008) The Poker Players Alliance (PPA), the important poker grassroots backing group with more than one million members nationwide, nowadays submitted an amicus brief to the Franklin tour encourage in Kentucky about the confusion's suit ordering a seizure of domain names of 141 online gambling websites. The PPA contends that poker, plus online poker, is actually endorsed under Kentucky confusion law and is a willing of knack, not venture. As such, the root for the confusion's seizure of poker-only website domain names is unfounded.
"The actions by the confusion of Kentucky are not only fanatical, but groundless in that it can be visibly proven that poker is actually a willing of knack and not venture and thus poker Web sites should not be part of the confusion's action," said John Pappas, executive chief of the PPA. "The amicus brief filed on behalf of the PPA nowadays proves this."
Key points of the amicus brief embrace:
broad explore citing authority belief that poker is actually a willing of knack;
References to academic, betting and artificial intelligence authoritys citing the actuality that knack is an important amount to endearing at poker, be it against a creature or a notebook;
Unequivocal consensus among authoritys that in the long run a knacked poker player will beat an unknacked poker player;
Kentucky confusion law asserts that "a contest or willing in which eligibility to participate is determined by venture and the best winner is determined by knack shall not be considered gambling";
Under Kentucky law, poker is a endorsed willing of knack because the actualitys can clearly sustain a result that knack of the player predominates over venture in determining outcome;
The present suit provides no prove to insinuate that any of the poker willings played on any of the 141 websites in problem are based on venture as disparate to knack;
luggage in other confusions as well as a national Communications Commission (FCC) letter verify that knack is the dominant actualityor in the willing of poker; and
The suit raises First Amendment released lecture issues in restricting residents' access to poker websites that surround newscast, blogs and forums as well as the ability to play poker.
The amicus brief concludes that given the confusion's require of prove that poker as played on any of the websites in problem is not a allowed willing of knack under Kentucky law, that there is "no reasonable venture of winner on the underlying state of ilendorsedity that would confirm itsroot for forfeiture of the domain names."
In addition to filing the amicus brief, PPA has conducted a enormous grassroots drive to support the over 13,000 online poker players in the confusion of Kentucky. PPA members have flooded the offices of chief Steve Beshear and native selected officials with thousands of mail, emails and receiver calls expressing their outrage over this suit and urging them to identify poker as a willing of knack and keep their rights to play poker online.
"Poker players in Kentucky are not winning the actions of chief Beshear and the date lightly. They are outraged and rightly so and will preach their attention awaiting this unfounded assault on their franknesss is bunged," sustained Pappas.

At first, it looked like the Brewers getting into the playoffs would be a boon for the Cubs; getting to face the Dodgers, and hence avoiding both Johan Santana and Cole Hamels. But there are good reasons to expect the Dodgers to be a lot more dangerous than their 87-78 record and anemic 4.32 runs scored per game would indicate. And none of those reasons have anything to do with goats or black cats or fans catching balls. Still, with home-field advantage and a healthier bullpen, the Cubs look like its their series to lose assuming they are healthy.
Of course, missing the aces of Philly and New York is probably a good thing, with Johan sporting a killer 1.71 ERA in 21 career innings against the Cubs, and Hamels a 2.61 ERA in 31 IP. Yet, the three pitchers the Cubs are likely to see – Lowe, Kuroda, and Billingsley – arent going to be a picnic for them. While theres more to a pitcher than just WHIP, keeping runners off base is obviously important for winning games, and these guys are 4th, 13th, and 24th respectively in the NL in WHIP this season (among ERA qualifiers). The other aspect of run creation – slugging – paints an even better picture, as they are 7th, 8th, and 10th among qualifiers in slugging% allowed. Kurodas the #3 starter, probably based on inferior “Cy Young” numbers (9-10, 3.73), but NL hitters know better. A pitcher who holds batters to an anemic batting line of .253/.299/.359 is getting it done. And he doesnt have a funky Hideo Nomo leg kick with allows baserunners to go to the races against him, either. Base thieves have stolen only 7 bases against him in 183.1 IP, while getting caught twice and picked off two more times.
Digging deeper into the Dodgers pitching presents even more potential problems for the Cubs. As a team, the Cubs slug about the same against righties (.443 vsR to .442 vsL), but their batting average (.274 vs .288) and – most importantly – on-base percentage (.350 vs. .366) are both significantly lower. Using Runs Created/Game, the Cubs are about 6% worse against righty starters (5.23 vs 5.57). And the Dodgers righties are more lopsided that the norm. Here are the splits for the Dodgers starters, along with league-average R/L splits for righty pitchers:
NL Average (vsR as RHP): .255/.318/.405, 4.24 RC/G
NL Average (vsL as RHP): .273/.348/.429, 5.03 RC/G
Derek Lowe (vsR, career): .241/.286/.346, 3.19 RC/G
Derek Lowe (vsL, career): .274/.337/.403, 4.58 RC/G
Chad Billingsley (vsR, career): .218/.294/.351, 3.23 RC/G
Chad Billingsley (vsL, career): .287/.381/.396, 5.18 RC/G
Hiroki Kuroda (vsR): .246/.292/.319, 3.03 RC/G
Hiroki Kuroda (vsL): .260/.306/.399, 4.04 RC/G
It is difficult to be precise with any methodology to predict how a “hard righty” pitcher will do against a given offense, but a “quick and dirty” approach can approximate it. It can be seen that the Dodgers 3 starters are about 30% better against righty hitters than they are against lefty hitters, compared to NL average of 16%. Since this “advantage” will apply to 7 of the 8 Cubs hitters, this “lopsidedness” of the L.A. Pitchers causes a decline of approximately 11% to the Cubs offense. This is in addition to the basic fact that these pitchers are all better than average (ERA+ ratings – from baseball-reference.com – of 136, 119, and 141). Pitchers who are that good can be expected to reduce scoring by typical hitters by 23%, so – with both depreciating factors added in – the Cubs league-leading offense goes down from 5.31 runs per game to a measly 3.63 runs/game.
And things get even worse for the Cubs. In a September 29 article at The Hardball Times, Sal Baxamusa writes:
A Dodger lineup consisting of Rafael Furcal, Russell Martin, Manny Ramirez, Andre Ethier, James Loney, Matt Kemp, Casey Blake, Blake Dewitt, and some random pitcher will score something like 5.18 runs per game. That figure is the result of current Marcel projections for each those players, assuming an average-hitting pitcher for two plate appearances, and a league-average pinch-hitter for two more.
Now, Mr. Baxamusa makes a lot of assumptions to get here, the largest leap being that Furcal will come back and perform at the level a Marcel projection would indicate after missing most of the season. But its a safe bet to assume that the team will hit a lot better than the anemic 4.32 runs/game they put up in the regular season (ahead of only the Nats, Giants, and Padres). For people (such as this author) who still think, “pitchers park” when LA is mentioned, its been playing as a good hitters park in recent years, adding further fuel to the argument that the Dodgers didnt hit well in 2008.
Looking into platoon splits doesnt change much, as the typical righty pitcher sees 53.4% righty batters, and the Dodgers have 4 of their 8 hitters who hit from the right side. The big unknown is really how well the Cubs pitchers will be able to thwart the now-mighty Dodger offense. Part of this is the wildly inconsistent Carlos Zambrano. When hes “on”, hes almost unhittable (or completely unhittable, as on one occasion recently). Dempster has been the most consistent Cubs starter, and can probably be considered as reliable as anyone to keep them in the games he starts, even against great starting pitching. But Harden represents another form of risk from Zambrano, as its unclear how many innings hell be able to go, and even whether hell be able to pitch on any given day. Fortunately for the Cubs, they have a great #4 starter in Ted Lilly, who should be able to step in to any short starts by either risky Cubs starter and do a fine job.
Most analyses of how the Cubs pitching will do seem more in the purview of psychoanalysis than that of sports analysis. Starting Harden on long rest, and only using him once in the first short series seems like a good strategy to keep him healthy. Frankly, anyone who claims to be able to predict what Carlos Zambrano will do is probably deluding themselves. His strikeouts are down this year, continuing a decline begun in 2007. His arm slot has been off the past two years. His ERA is 3.91, up from his career ERA of 3.48. His xFIP (from The Hardball Times formula) is a bloated 4.68, indicating that even his 3.91 ERA is misleading. Yet he pitched an absolute gem against the Astros on September 14. Just assuming that Zambrano pitches the way hes pitched on average this year (a huge assumption, obviously), he could probably almost hold his own with Chad Billingsley in Game 2. Given the starter matchups, the Cubs should have even pitching in Game 1, and a significant advantage in Game 3 at least as long as Harden remains in the game.
With Hong-Chih Kuo sidelined, both teams have serious lefty weaknesses in their pens. If Saito isnt 100%, the Cubs should have a huge advantage in the pen. Broxton has been good, but Marmol has been utterly ridiculous. And Kerry Wood has quietly had a very fine season, holding opponents to a .288 on-base percentage.
On defense, the Cubs probably have a slight advantage. For the season, most defensive metrics show the Cubs to have a clear edge, but the dropoff from Furcal to Berroa or Nomar at shortstop can be very impactful to a teams defensive stats. If Furcal is 100% on defense, the defensive units are probably a wash.

douglas jones Not being one of the expert economists I naively find some of the assumptions made in making the market model a little far from the real world. Was it not Kenneth Archer who found similarly? Anyway we are asked to believe that this mistake, as Bush has labelled the scam, whether this refers to the failure of the market to correct or misreading of finance data by players is not .

Every year among the hundreds of good high school basketball players, a few start looking like stars even before they get a chance to prove themselves beyond the high school hardwood. One of the Class of 2009 stars is John Wall (PG, 6, 2009), a lightning fast point man who is a one man fast break. Ive written about Walls basketball recruiting journey quite a bit in the past on ACCBasketballRecruiting.com for a couple of reasons. First, hes a North Carolina player. Second, he still lists his hometown NC State Wolfpack as an option for his likely one-and-done college career. Third, well, its hard to ignore a player who could be a lottery pick in another year.
The facets of Johns game are pretty well known. Hes incredibly explosive and athletic. Hes very, very fast up and down the floor. How fast? NBA scorch mark fast. There is no doubt that John Wall is athletic enough, explosive enough and downright speed-racer quick enough to play in the NBA.
The knocks on Wall are often related to his attitude. He sometimes seems to take plays off or disappear. He isnt known as a deep shooter and despite sometimes playing great defense, he needs to do it much more often. I think Wall is probably the kind of player who probably will get drafted after his Freshman year, but in reality it would be nice to see him play three years in college, develop a shooting touch and a brand name before heading into the NBA. But, thats a subject for another post on another day and has less to do with John Wall and a whole lot to do with the NBA.
So, maybe you watched Wall in the Rucker Park melee on ESPN and wondered what all the fuss was about, with one or two big time highlights in a very ragged game. Well, watch the video and wait for the breakaway dunk by Wall, who goes from what seems like a leisurely breakaway into a Dr. J leaping dunk in a fraction of a second (around the 0:50 mark).

With the NFL season just underway, fantasy football is now in full swing. Fantasy football could prove to be just a thing to do for some, but for many of its players fantasy football is a passion. People who do not understand fantasy football may think it is very simple to play and win, but it is not as easy as it looks. Playing fantasy football takes time and effort and college students seem inclined to make that time.
Nate Hunt and Ali Saleh are two college students from two totally different places but the have one thing in common, fantasy football. Hunt is in his last year at Quinnipiac University as a Diagnostic Imaging major. In a typical week Hunt spends 15 hours in class and another five on his schoolwork. Compare that to the time he spends on his fantasy football teams, three of them to be exact, Every Sunday I spend all day watching football usually from one in the afternoon until about eleven at night with some breaks here and there. I also watch Monday Night Football every week, Hunt said. That is about 13 hours a week watching football. I also spend about a half hour a day doing research for my leagues, picking up players, looking at match-ups, and other things. All in all Nate dedicates about 16 hours a week just for fantasy football.
Ali Saleh is in his last year at St. Johns University, studying to be a physicians assistant. Saleh has a big work load over at St. Johns I am usually in class Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until until 5 p.m. I also stay after my classes in the library studying and doing my work. School is basically a full-time job for Saleh but he still manages to fit in time for his two fantasy football teams, I will try to watch about five or six hours of football on Sunday but I usually miss the Monday night game. Saleh spends about two hours a week doing research for his teams and he finds time for that in between his classes.
Both Saleh and Hunt find the same dilemmas that most college students find, trying to make time for classes, homework, part-time jobs, and their social lives. Still both of them make time for fantasy football, but why? I have been doing it since high school so it is important to me, said Hunt. It is a good way to keep in touch with my friends back in Rhode Island while I am here at Quinnipiac. Saleh said, It is a great distraction for me and another reason to watch and love football. I take pride in winning against my friends and to talk a little trash while doing it.
Fantasy football has become a phenomenon for most of the country. Doctors, lawyers, college students and whoever else you can think of find time for it. While it is just fantasy football, for most people like Nate Hunt and Ali Saleh it is a reality.

Fantasy football has become a phenomenon for most of the country. Doctors, lawyers, college students and whoever else you can think of find time for it. While it is just fantasy football, for most people like Nate Hunt and Ali Saleh it is a reality.

about them.
Second, related to that last point, the sheer number of articles, TV interviews, YouTube videos and so on demonstrating Palins astonishing lack of knowledge about history and events leading to her inability to go beyond talking points (and even that comes out badly in interviews to where McCain has to defend her!) has got to be demoralizing to supporters. Obama may not have much experience either, but at least he has a good grasp of all the issues. Tonights debate should be a defining moment for Palin.
Third, for over a year, as a result of Bush and the war primarily, its been a given that Republicans will lose House and Senate seats. Nothing they can do about that, meaning the Democrats will continue to control both.
Fourth, anyone with the slightest understanding of the economy could forsee the housing bubble bursting. It had to happen eventually, its just that the mortgage mess perhaps made it happen sooner. Combined with all the other bad economic trends over the last few years, it was clear the next Prez was going to have a mess to deal with.
So, knowing all that, did the Republican leadership decide to take a fall by nominating two people who ultimately couldnt win once the public got a good look? Let the Dems have it so that he/she gets blamed for the pain that would be endured fixing it all? Get the blame for dealing with Iraq, Afghanistan, etc that was going to happen anyway because of how Bush handled it all? Then in 2012 come to the of the country with someone anyone who wasnt a Democrat?
McCain supporters, before answering, ask yourself this question: At any other time and ignoring who the Democratic candidates are, would McCain and Palin be the ones you REALLY want leading this country?
What do you think? Sound off.

Im out of tune more often than not with conventional wisdom, so I dont have a strong opinion on who did better. Several months ago, the expectations were that McCain would best Obama in a foreign policy debate and it would be a victory if Obama could hold his own. After McCains behavior the last week, I think the new expectations were that it would be a victory for McCain if he showed up on stage wearing pants.
I wasnt sure if McCain would fly in on stage in a hot air balloon, if he would rappel down from the rafters, or ride in piggyback on Joe Lieberman yeling “Yippie!” When he walked on stage like a normal candidate, I think that was a major campaign surprise. A real game changer.
I like the new format of the debates a lot, and Id be happy to have Jim Lehrer host all of them. He does a great job. One quibble with a question he asked, the one about what programs or priorities would be put on hold because of the cost of the bailout. Its one of those questions where the evasive, politician-speak answer is the right one.
The number $700 billion wasnt arrived at based on certain conditions in the market. It was because they needed a big, dramatic number. Thats not a joke. I dont have the quote from the Treasury official who said that handy, but I can dig it up if you want. Here is a link to the quote.
The point is no one knows at this point whether the bailout will be $350 billion, $700 billion, or $1.3 trillion. We dont know how much money the government will lose (or possibly even make in the long term) because no one knows yet how much these sub-prime mortgages cost. The point of the bailout as I understand it is to create an environment where banks can find the true value of these mortgages (like on an auction market) and be able to sell them without going bankrupt. Once every financial institution has their books in balance and knows how much money they truly have, it will be easier to make new loans to businesses and lend to each other because then theyll know how much risk they can take.
(I have to say that Im not confident about my understanding at all. I could be completely off.)
The main point is that neither McCain or Obama will know how much they have to cut or what changes theyll have to make until they know how much the budget shortfall will be. I guess they could have responded Well, if I had to cut something, I would cut but it would have been better if Lehrer had asked that question directly.
What did you think? Let me know your thoughts.
