Walkoff Walk. The Red Sox have won an average of 93.1 games over the past 7 years. In the seven years prior to that, they won an average of 86 games. All that is to say, what was once a decent team has upped their year in and year out performance to a much higher level, and while the playoffs aren't expected every year, it sure is tougher to take when they don't get there. But this year was a relative cruise toward October. Since Boston had been making the postseason with some frequency without winning their division for a dozen or so years, it's hard to summon any righteous indignation about not winning the division, and "if we don't win it, I hope the Rays do" has become a phrase just as overused here as anywhere else in the United States of Baseball. But if you're under the impression that I'm not freaking out about the playoffs, you're sorely mistaken and the only reason I haven't pissed my jeans is because the Brewers thought of it first and I'm no copycat. A couple weeks back I was high high high on this team's chances to repeat. I felt like Ortiz was coming around at the right time, Bay was filling in respectably for Manny and the entire right side of the infield was getting MVP consideration. Since then injuries, and the soft underbelly they revealed, have me seriously questioning their ability to go the distance. Josh Beckett's oblique strain is an injury that is rarely seen in public without the word "nagging." That leaves the rotation, after Jon Lester, pretty light. At first glance Matsuzaka's numbers are great, but once you look more closely at his WHIP, and more importantly, watch him pitch every game hanging off a ledge by his fingernails, he does little to inspire confidence. Tim Wakefield is impossible to predict and Paul Byrd gets hit harder than one of John Bonham's floor toms. Injuries in the lineup to JD Drew and Mike Lowell have allowed weaknesses to appear form other places. Jed Lowrie has redefined the rookie wall and Mark Kotsay may still be the gosh darned nicest guy in the game but hasn't been hitting anything. In a situation where even a playing Mike Lowell may be limited to DH, there is a huge burden on many guys that may not be a-list players. The bullpen has been marginally better down the stretch, and this team still won 95 games. I like their chances against the Angels because, well, the Angels are overrated. But after that. Color me a pessimist. I'm not sure what color that would be, but when you figure it out feel free to color me in it. Paint, crayon whatever. Why do I sound so terminally negative? Things haven't chaged all that much for a lifelong Sox fan. It takes more than 7 years.

Once again this year, Albert is making a strong case for himself as the Most Valuable Player in the National League. Early in the year, Lance Berkman of the Houston Astros was having an absolutely unreal year, and would have had to be the choice. Berkman fell off, though. In the second half, Carlos Delgado of the New York Mets made a big charge and began to generate some buzz. That's mostly died down again, though, as Delgado has cooled back off and so have the Mets.
Really, there's only one player right now that stands between Albert and his second MVP award. And that just happens to be the same man that stood between Albert and his second MVP back in 2006. I'm talking, of course, about the local boy (the pride of Lafayette High School), Ryan Howard.

This spring I picked up my greatest through-the-mail success: Umpire Dale Ford. Dale was the umpire behind the plate during Game 6 of the 1986 World Series.

Currently, Dale Ford is out of baseball and is a member of the Tennessee State Legislature. I contacted his assistant who gave my information to Dale. A few days later I had a voice mail from Dale Ford! We talked on the phone for a few minutes and he told me how great it was to umpire and to be a small part in that historic play. It was really a great experience talking to him.

Dale Ford has a long history in baseball including historic clashes against Billy Martin, Reggie Jackson, and Earl Weaver.

This project I'm working on is a 16"x20" photo of the Mookie Wilson ground ball through Bill Buckner's legs in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. So far I have Dale Ford, Bob Stanley and Bill Robinson's autograph on it (not seen on this image). I saw Stanley and Robinson at an MAB show last year. Bob Stanley was very cool about signing it and just laughed when he saw the picture. I was lucky to get Bill Robinson's autograph, sadly he passed away a few months later.

playing volleyball, having good grades, getting enough sleep, getting enough to eat is way hard to do. my life has been all about volleyball for the past 2 months. It has probably been the hardest and funnest thing i've ever done. but there are good things and bad things about playing for a highschool team. i'm gone from 7:20 am till 6:00 pm. It's a very long and hard day. I wake up at 6:00 get ready for school leave my house at 7:20 for the bus. then i go to school from 8:00-2:50 or whatever time i have to check out. then at 2:50 i go and change into my volleyball stuff. at 3:00 i meet all the girls outside and we drive over to alta. from then on till 6 it's alta volleyball. (thats just a practice day) for a game day its the same but i usually get to check out a little earlier. then we go to alta and either ride a bus to an away game or go to alta and start setting up. when we get on the court we all say a cheer and then we start warming up. then we get to play! the order goes first sophomore team, second varsity, third jv. we get to stay for that whole time. it's so long. right when we get done playing our game we get to go shag for the varsity team while they are warming up. when they are getting ready to play we get to eat some food that we packed or our parents brought us then we get to cheer the whole rest of the time. if we don't cheer.... i don't think we wanna know what will happen:) but its so fun making up new cheers and having fun. then when varsity game is over we get to do a little bit of our homework. but we still have to cheer while we do that. and in volleyball the games are best 3games out of 5. so it could go on forever. first 2 games are to 25 last 3 are to 15. We love beating the team in three because we get out earlier. so on game days i don't get home until like 8 and on practice days i get home at 6. when i get home i eat dinner, take a shower, do my homework and go to bed. its way hard keeping up your grades. i have a ton of homework everynight. but i stay up and do it anyway. for alta volleyball you have to have good grades. if not......punishments will come physically and i don't think i wanna go there. ha ha but its not that bad it just takes a lot of time and effort. i love playing volleyball i think i've improved so much and i love all the girls there. here are some lists and things.

But now that my Pirates have been eliminated from playoff contention for the rest of my life, I don't have much to root for. Then, when I try to figure out what the hell is going on in September, so I can begin watching, I am met with an array of IF/THEN statements on ESPN about who might or might not end up in the playoffs.

"It's going to be tougher" to advance with the loss, Cornell Glenn said. "We know we have to work even harder. We have a job to do and we just have to forget this game."
Though the Americans came in with a four-game winning streak, their offense has been patchy and they eked out 1-0 victories in each of the prior three games all on the road.
No such problems against TT, as the Americans got two quick goals in the first 18 minutes.
"That wasn't important. The most important thing was to win," Dempsey insisted. "Whether we scored one goal or five, a win is a win."
DaMarcus Beasley earned the Americans a free kick in the ninth minute when he was tripped up as he sprinted down the left sideline. Donovan lofted the kick over the scrum in front of the goal and Marvin Phillip had no chance as Bradley flicked the ball into the goal with the right side of his foot.
Donovan pumped his fist when he saw the ball go in, and the rest of the Americans mobbed Beasley. It was Bradley's third international goal, and second this year.
Nine minutes later, the Americans doubled their lead. Dempsey had the ball on the right side and fed Beasley on a give-and-go. There were four defenders in front of him, but they were lined up flat, and Beasley threaded the ball on a perfect pass to Dempsey, who put it in the far side of the net.
It was the fourth goal in as many games for Dempsey. He had two at home against Barbados, and also scored at Cuba. He did not play when the Americans traveled to Barbados.
"Their defense wasn't comfortable coming in with (Beasley and Dempsey)," Donovan said. "And if they did come, our outside backs did a good job of getting around them and making it difficult. Time after time, we found little seams, we could turn plays and be dangerous almost every time we had the ball."
After managing just one shot in the first 45 minutes, the Soca Warriors got much more aggressive in the second half and managed to create a few chances on corner kicks. Steve Cherundolo and Carlos Bocanegra cleared out two, and Oguchi Onyewu knocked another shot to safety just outside the goal.

Liverpool beat and drew with the Dutch side in the 2006-07 group stages and then triumphed 3-0 on aggregate in the quarter-finals.

"PSV are a different side with a different manager and many players since the last time we played them in Europe," Benitez explained.

"Yes, we have beaten them at Anfield twice, but that is when things can be dangerous. People expect things to happen.

"The fact that PSV lost their opening group match to Atletico Madrid is also a problem for us.

"They have to get something here now and they will sit and defend and try to catch us on the counter-attack."

Kromkamp, who played 18 games for Liverpool during the 2005-06 season, speaks highly of his old club and believes they can win both the Champions League and Premier League this season.

"They can copy what Manchester United achieved last season in winning both the European Cup and the Premier League.

"They certainly have the quality. In fact, even when I was here I believed they were capable of winning anything they took part in.

"Having watched them a few times on TV this season, I can see their confidence is high and they are certainly able to win both the major tournaments."

Pacific Palms Resort back in July, but as always, Im way behind on the blog. Young/Cutler/Leinert
I know its only the 2nd week of the 3rd NFL season for these guys and you probably thing its still too early to judge these guys, but Im going to do it anyway. However, before I start, I want to confess that Im a little biased. I live in the Nashville area and, as a result, got to watch Jay Cutler play at Vandy for 4 years. That being said, heres what I think
From the beginning I have thought that Jay Cutler would be a better NFL QB than either of the other two. Yes, I know, Leinert won the Heisman Trophy and a national championship his junior year at USC. He then led his team back to the BCS championship game his senior year where he lost to you know who, Vince Young and the mighty Texas Longhorns. (On a side note, that game was probably the best college football game I ever watched.) However Leinert never showed a very strong arm and his teams were so much better than almost every other team they played, he was only really tested 2-3 times a year. Not exactly great prep for the NFL, where everybodys a stud!
What can I say about VY? Great college player, incredible athletic skills and the QB of a national championship team at Texas. Unfortunately that has not translated into making him a standout NFL QB thus far. The little bit of success the Titans have enjoyed with VY at QB has come from his legs and their outstanding defense, not on the strength of his passing arm. In college Vince was just a better athlete than almost everyone else he played against and that was enough. Well, welcome to the NFL Vince. Youre not head and shoulders better than everyone else and it takes more than athletic ability to be a successful NFL QB. It takes heart, mental toughness and preparation. Unfortunately, to this point, VY has not shown much of any of these traits.
Which brings me to Cutler. Unlike Young and Leinert, Cutler played for an also ran team. He didnt have the luxury of playing with guys that were better than everyone else. Instead he had the privilege of playing for Vanderbilt and getting the fire knocked out of him in most games. Yet he persevered and continued to improve. Cutler came out of college with the better arm, a bigger heart and the mental toughness he would need to suceed at the NFL level. I just liked and admired the guy. I will never understand why the Titans didnt draft him!
Two games into the season, heres a comparison: Leinert has yet to play, beaten out of his starting position by a 37 year old; Young played a little over half of game 1 before getting hurt (then totally wigging out, but thats a whole nother blog), throwing for 110 yards with 1 TD and 2 interceptions; Cutler, in 2 games has thrown for 650 yards, 6 TDs and only 1 interception.
Which QB do you want for your home team? Which QB do you want for your fantasy team? As for me, Im going with Cutler! (Just an aside, I started him on my fantasy team today, over my man Romo, and he came through to score 73 points!)
Sunday Afternoon Naps
Somewhere I think theres a written law that says every man should be able to take a nap in front of his tv on Sunday afternoons. Could be on the sofa or in the recliner, but not in the bedroom. Going to the bedroom is just not the same. See, the best naps are not the ones you plan, but the ones you just sort of fall into. Getting up and going into the bedroom is too premeditated and thus just not as good.
The problem with the nap thing comes when your wife, or children, are wanting to watch the same tv youre trying to fall asleep in front of. They think that when you fall asleep they can sweep in, confiscate the remote and turn on something other than sports. Thats just wrong!! They just dont get that the quality of the nap depends on the tv remaining tuned to the game, match or race you were watching (I find baseball and golf to be the best to fall asleep to) when you dosed off. The shock of waking up to What Not To Wear, s Next Top Model  or Shear Genius just absolutely ruins any possibility of resuming your nap. By the time you get the remote back, youre wide awake and its just almost flat out impossible to go back to the nap zone.

This years Premier League has had no shortage of stories, given the happenings at Newcastle, Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea, but the most remarkable story of the season has been the under-reported plight of West Ham United. After going to Craven Cottage and winning 2-1 on Saturday, the Hammers occupy fifth place in a league in which some think they should have been relegated.
Those feelings come from last weeks decision by an independent review that found West Ham illegally used Carlos Tevez in avoiding relegation during the 2006-07 season. Tevezs play at the end of that season created a minor legend for him amongst Hammers fans, but amongst Sheffield United followers, the Argentine forward represents everything that was unfair about their teams relegation.
Tevez should not have been on West Ham, his transfer being handled through a third party (and agency that owned Tevezs registration, against Premier League rules). Sheffield Uniteds claim isthey were wrongly relegated because of the use of an illegal player.  That claim was upheld by the independent review, and damages are to be awarded. Those damages, meant to compensate Sheffield United for losing out on Premier League revenue, are speculated to be between twenty-one and thirty million pounds, all of which will come out of West Hams coughers.
The news of the huge financial judgment is only one part of a summer-long saga engulfing Upton Park. It folows a summer sell-off of payers, the resignation of Alan Curbishley and the appoint of Gianfranco Zola as their new manager.
In the short-term, the decision will have no effect on the pitch, but for a club that was selling players this summer in an attempt to balance their books, it seems likely (despite denials) that January sales will happen.  Owned by Icelandic bankers, the now mythological Credit Crunch could also handcuff West Ham.
For now, Gianfranco Zolas task is to accumulate as many points as possible before the next transfer window. The idea is to try and stave off relegation with a good run in the fall.
With two wins in two matches, the Italian manager is off to a great start. He has adjusted to the Hammers weakness along the back and in the middle by switching formation, going to a 4-3-2-1 that provides the back support while midigating their need for a creative presence in midfield.  The formation has also help offset the loss of striker Dean Ashton by moving the attack away from a tactic that was overly dependent on his scoring goals.

We spend so much time looking at the top of the table that the machinations at the bottom are often overlooked. West Brom got three huge points at Middlesbrough, helping them to offset the effects of a relatively difficult starting schedule.
These wins have helped created a group of four teams that are unwittingly positioning themselves for a relegation-battle. Newcastle and Tottenham have been well-covered. They are joined by Bolton and Stoke City, two teams who have lacked in both quality and form.
Bolton and Stoke are each teams that lack athleticism, relying on their size and strength to win via set pieces and direct play. While such a style used to be viable in England, the influx of talent from around the world means a league of bigger, stronger, faster players who can dispel such unimaginative attacks.
Unfortunately for both the Trotters and the Potters, there are not many other options for attack within their squads. Bolton and Stoke may not be the worst teams in the league right now, but they are the most likely sides to stay in this conversation throughout the year.

Although no agreement has been reached at this time, discussions are ongoing. Hunt Sports Group plans to continue as the Managing Investor-Operator of the club.



While I cant discuss details of the situation, comparing it to the recent investment by Oscar de la Hoya and others in the Houston Dynamo is a reasonable comparison. Consider the group led by Bloch and Noorzai to be an addition to the existing group of minority investors that has been with the Crew since Day One. The processes and discussions related to this transaction are ongoing, they are not on any specific timetable and a deal may or may not be consummated.



I think there are three significant messages to deliver:



1. The Crew is not moving to Las Vegas, regardless of whether this transaction takes place or not. We have an established stadium, a recent significant investment in our concert business here, a successful and growing youth development program, plans and interest in developing a world class training complex and many other long term strategic plans to facilitate the continued growth and prosperity of the club in Columbus.



2. This transaction, should it take place, will not affect the current organization or our operation. We will continue to operate in our current form working diligently to build a club that will make our fans proud and create new fans.



3. The fact that there is interest in investing significant resources in the Columbus Crew is a positive sign that business leaders see the value in whats happening in Columbus, in the direction of the club and the potential return on their investment.
